Young Man With the Big Beat

It looks like Sony Legacy is planning a new boxset. Amazon already has it in pre-order, but no more information than a title and the label boxset so far.

Sounds like a Danny Fisher boxset
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 13, 2011
I don't really get your point Steve, just wait and see what this box is.
benny scott wrote on June 13, 2011
According to Amazon the release is planned at the end of September (27th). Box set will contain 5 discs . Amazon-price in the Uk :£87.52 ! USA :$155.52 ! IMO not cheap at all, unless maybe this release should contain a (quality)-book. Have to wait for more product-info content-wise. Steve: ????? "Danny Fisher Boxset" ???? Some explanation pls if possible ? Here in Belgium there's a singer called Danny Fisher, but I can hardly think of some relation with what you mean . Is this something typical from the USA, not known at all or very little here in Belgium, Holland or Europe in general ? Always El.

What can they possibly give us, its like ringing out a dish cloth it can only hold so much water. The thing i wonder about the most is when I look at the Material that Sam Phillips produced through the years that is in the Hands of Shelby Singleton and there are tons of tapes by the strangest artists, what happend to all the early work of Elvis Presley, i never really believed they were erased or LOST. They must exist someplace

I think I know what Steve V means. In King Creole, right before he sings Dixieland Rock, he is introduced as the young man with the beat , Danny Boom Boom Fisher, or something similar to that.
benny scott wrote on June 14, 2011
You're probably right dgirl ! Haven't looked at the movie for some time. Good memory in any case ! Thanks for the hint . Always El.
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 14, 2011
Dgirl..you r right! now i know what steve meant..i simply forgot about that, but know i remember it again.

Steve, well done. This made me laugh.
Steve V wrote on June 14, 2011
Wow you guys are good! Yes that was the intent (altho it was very loosely based on a line from the movie). It just hit me that way when I read it. Well done!

That movie has been previously titled "A Stone for Danny Fisher" !!!

Well it looks like Sept will be exciting for fans of the early Elvis, what with the Legacy edititon of Elvis Presley and now this 5 cd/book set from Sony,i only hope Sony/EPE put some real effort into pushing these releases in all the music mags,a strong tv campaign and radio play.If Sony/EPE are serious in getting Elvis back into the public domain then this is a chance to get all things right and pull all the stops out for these releases.Elvis in the fifties when just about everything he did was ground breaking, record breaking and making music history is what made Elvis Presley the legend he is, so come on Sony/EPE give the world what they need a chance to re-live the golden days when Elvis shook the world and show us the fans you do care about the music /image of Elvis Presley.
Andy_2 wrote on June 15, 2011
Looks like a worthwhile release to me, just the kind of thing that gives credibility to Elvis which is sadly lacking. Suppose most people on here have everything on this release but i don't so might be interested. Nice to have a set from the year that he changed the world.
Andy_2 wrote on June 15, 2011
And what a great picture on the cover........
Steve V wrote on June 15, 2011
Amazon says $155.00. Thats a lot of money for a few unreleased tracks. Dont care about replicas of items or interviews. I love the 50's and this is a nice set but afraid I'll have to pass. They price this stuff out of reality.
Andy_2 wrote on June 15, 2011
just seen that the Elvis presley legacy edition will be released in Sept containing the first two albums plus related singles for around $16 ( about a tenner to us in England ). This now makes the price of this boxset ridiculous seeing as it contains nearly all the same material apart from a few extras. Think i'll pass on the box set.
Steve V wrote on June 15, 2011
I am sure they box is very well done, but come on 155.00 for approx 90% of released material? The day of the cd box is really over so keep these things under 100 bucks if you want to sell them. People will buy anything new I'm sure, but my days for that are over. This feels like a Tunzi release to me!
LonElvis wrote on June 15, 2011
This does appear pretty pricey on Amazon but at the official site elvis1956.com it's much cheaper at $109 (US). The set seems pretty nice and well done. It's hard to justify when you own the complete masters set but it's still tempting. Of course when you factor in the price of the FTD CDs it's not that pricey of a set. I give SONY / Legacy credit for this set. This is the quality of set we need to see more of. I'd like to see a set like this for 1977. That might be a good way to repackage the Elvis in Concert recordings and the other spring recordings (that were used on Moody Blue).
Herman wrote on June 16, 2011
I agree with you LonElvis, a 1977 box too !
JerryNodak wrote on June 17, 2011
I already have all the masters. So what's on here that I absolutely need? Nothing! If I decide to splurge and re-buy some of the '56 material (again) I'll purchase the Sony Legacy release of "Elvis Presley/"Elvis."
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 17, 2011
JerryNodak nothing on the box you need?didn't your read that there's a unreleased concert of 1956 on it? or you must allready have it?, which is highly unlikely to me, some people will buy the box because the box is essential, and to celebrate Elvis 1956 as well, there so much more to it then only the released masters, look at how the box is presented, in my eyes that's worth the price alone.
dgirl wrote on June 17, 2011
Disc 3 is all I would really want from this set because of the unreleased concert, but can I justify spending 100+ dollars for it? I cannot. I think this release is way overpriced. Even the Sinatra multi- DVD concert box from last year retailed at 79.99. Come on Sony u are milking us dry. I hope one day the contents from that concert can be obtained much cheaper on another release. As nice as it would be to have , its not something I would constantly play anyway.
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 17, 2011
To each his own, like i said the whole box is beautiful, and i like beautiful things, so i will still buy it anyway.
JerryNodak wrote on June 17, 2011
Jesse Garon: Like I said there's nothing I ABSOLUTELY need. I'd like to have the unreleased concert, but not at a price of $109.00. As for how it's presented, yes, it's a pretty package, but I have no interest in any of the "window dressing."
Steve V wrote on June 18, 2011
Thats it, Im selling my whole collection. Look for it on ebay. I will purchase all future re-releases from now on because I know the label will keep re-releasing well into the next century and because I like beautiful things also. What I dont like is having multiple cds with the same songs on them 100's of times, so its time to clean house. Bring on the next box! Maybe it will be all the 50's movie songs in a box with a book & photos! I cant wait to spend.
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 18, 2011
Good luck with that Steve, i will buy this set anyway if you don't mind ; )
Harvey Alexander wrote on June 19, 2011
Why do some fans feel they HAVE to buy EVERY piece of Elvis product that comes along? Do they feel they're being disloyal to The King if they don't? That's a load of bunk. The unreleased concert on this set will turn up on any amount of other CDs as soon as its released, so instead of bitching about the price just ignore this box and go for the cheaper option.
Jesse Garon Presley wrote on June 19, 2011
Why i do feel that i have to buy everything? well first of all i do NOT buy everything( concerning Elvis),but if i find something that looks beautiful and i want to have it?, then i don't have to explain myself to other fans who don't want to buy this,Mr.Harvey Alexander if you don't wanna buy this that is your own personal decision..not mine, and it's not only the unreleased concert i'm interested in,it's the whole package i'm interested in and with the things i have to deal with everyday, which is not making my life any easier, releases like this can make me forget about it,and so i will not have any regrets when i have this box in my collection, to each his own ok? not every Elvis fan thinks the same.

The only thing that bugs me is the kind of sentence in the promotion we shouldn't use to explain why Elvis was a big shift on the music scene. "Until 1956, the teenagers of suburban America, and the rest of the world, had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como" There's no need to depise the former genation. They did what they did and they did it well. Now Elvis came out when - he said it himself- there was "a new trend" and he was the leader of it. Elvis never put down the singers before him. Sony should rephrase certain sentences here. The context was simply that the new generation, and for the first time in history, the youth (teenagers) had become a market for the music companies and Elvis with many others was there to take over. He was more than talented, could sing almost everything but he was the NEW generation and he crossed that race barriers and made it something unique, still understood as a quantim leap in pop music. After him, the whole business and art changed forever, as society too. The Briitish invaders took over in the mid-60's and again a shift was made and others came along and again things evolved. as time went by. It still goes on today. Only a few, though, like Elvis remained as a bench mark in this adventure.
