Viva Viagra

July 25, 2007 | Other
Three years after the FDA yanked its "Wild Thing" ads off the air, Pfizer is again taking a playful approach with a Viagra TV spot riffing on the Elvis hit "Viva Las Vegas." And this time, they got the agency's OK in advance. The 30-second spot by McCann Erickson, which debuted on last night's NBC Nightly News, features a band of forty- and fiftysomething-looking men at a roadhouse bar playing "Viva Viagra." Although Elvis’s voice can’t be heard, the commercial spells E-l-v-i-s, from the way he sang the song, to the letter style of the written message at the end. Pfizer said the buoyant spot tested better than ads focusing more on the disease. "The goal of these ads is to take that upbeat tone and positive approach and motivate men to engage in dialogue with their physicians," said Pfizer spokesman Francisco Gebauer.

I sometimes can`t believe my eyes...this is definitely NOT the way Elvis`name should be used for. I mean, I get used to the flip flops and showercurtains, but Viagra? I don`t think this is a very original joke. I thought the Colonel passed away, or is he back in Amsterdam owning one of the famous Dutch Internet Pharmacies????

Poor Elvis, EPE should've canceled that one...Viagra should have taken a song from Mick Jagger instead...at 64 years old, it seems the rock star is still very much active...

How disgusting! I can't even think of words right now to describe how sick this is. Of course, that's probably a good thing because I wouldn't be allowed to use them. That privilege is reserved for just a few regular contributors to this site.

I hate the commercial. I hope EPE steps in. I hope they did not give permission for these idiots to use the song.

What is this world coming to when we have to watch ads like these. They ruined a great song. Lord come back soon.

My poor Robban, you wrote " give me more ". How much more viagra do you need ? LOL. If you think this is cool ....!! Do we really need commercials like this ? Viva Elvis !

It’s just a commercial, and i don’t believe it may offend Elvis or his Fans (us). And I think Elvis wouldn’t mind, after all, (and unfortunately for him and us) he was a huge “Pill Fan” no mater what pill it was!

C'mon guys, this is funny stuff. It's not an insult to Elvis, or any man in general. I bet there are plenty of happy couples since the invention of viagara!

Kinda catchy isnt it? I think I'll pop some.

What's next, a Depends Undergarment commercial using the song "I'm Counting On You"?...lol

I'm not sure why everyone is so annoyed. Yes it's an elvis song but no-one is insulting the man by dressing up in a jumpsuit the way that idiotic advertisers usually do. They just look like a bunch of guys having fun and changing the lyrics to a song - something most people have done. No-one says thankyou very much in an over the top caricature of Elvis. In Britain changing the lyrics to a song is done all the time by advertisers - Halifax Building Society, Cadburys Fruit and Nut Chocolate bars etc. Maybe its just the subject matter. If thats the case don't be so po-faced. Elvis put it about a bit and if he were still alive would probably have been thankful for a bit of help at the age of 72. If Pele can advertise Viagra so can a bunch of guys singing a song based on an Elvis song.
