Unedited Masters; Nashville 1971

July 08, 2012 | Music

OUT NOW from Venus is the next volume of Unedited Masters; Nashville 1971. This time you’ll be treated to 22 tracks you’ve never heard that way before. All tracks are mastered and mixed completely different to what you know, you’ll hear them in their full length and (as usual) the sound quality is flabbergasting.

As with the previous volumes, you’ll again have the opportunity to hear Elvis at his best. Gone are the awful disproportional overdubs and gone is the muffled sound. All that remains is Elvis and his musicians having a ball in the studio, recording some great songs. The greatest surprise must be “Amazing Grace” (take 2). Yes, we know that it has been released before. So we urge you to listen to that version first and then listen to our “blues version”, wanna bet you won’t believe this is the same take? We are very proud we can present this version to you, but we feel it’s a shame it hasn’t been released decades ago!

So get ready for some big surprises and don’t spoil it for yourself by listening on your computer. This CD should be played on a real sound system, as loud as your neighbors allow.

This 1971 session has been badly neglected in terms of Sony /FTD releasing a comprehensive overview of the session . The way Venus is doing it , leaving out the Christmas music makes sense. If you think back to the early seventies, this material really wasn't handled in the best way on releases like NOW ,and FOOL, and various singles. So this is a CD I will buy if I can locate a copy. Other wise I hope FTD will consider a similar release ,and as as matter of fact Ernst hinted of just such a release years ago in the pages of "Elvis The Man And His Music".

I have always loved the duet version of "The First Time Ever..." Don't know why Ernst neglected the duets with Temple and Ginger, but since he did I guess Venus will get my money again. Look forward to getting this one in a week or so. The next release by Venus is supposed to be the Unedited Masters from Hollywood in '72. I'm looking forward to an undubbed and unedited "Burning Love" on that set. Keep 'em coming Venus.

Lou A.....I remember the comments from Ernst in magazine but that was approx 10 years ago and FTD did release that mentioned cd......I sing all kinds in 2007. Im also happy to see that VENUS didnt include the chrismas/gospel tracks on this one :) Keith flynn wrote a detailed review of this yesterday.....go to cd collectors only or monkey business web sites.

I know we all climb all over Lex for the brevity or the lack of direction on his reviews, but after listening TWICE already (2.5 hrs. of my day) to this CD, I won't lash out at him again. This CD has me scratching my head for the right words. It is absolutely amazing that the folks at Venus can produce the sound that they deliver. This CD puts to shame many tracks released by RCA. The versions of "Bridge", "Early Morning", "Patch It Up" and others sound clearer, richer, and so much better than on the FTD releases of these songs. This CD even has the duet version (which I still prefer) of "The First Time Ever" which Ernst claims is on a missing session reel. If this track came from an acetate, all I can say is "wow !" The bluesy "Amazing Grace" is like discovering this gem all over. After I relace a few of the songs on my Ipod with these versions (esp. "Bridge"), I think I'm going to have to give it a third spin. This CD is mighty fine, indeed.

Hi emjel, if you're interested in a UK purchase I cannot help you. I can give you the info about a supplier living in Holland. Always El.

There may be nothing "new" in the Elvis world, but I'll take Unedited Masters series any day over another AR or soundboard concert recording. This series reminds me of Bilko's "American Crown Jewels" in both scope and quality. The Bilko release remained at the top of the Import list for years. No doubt the Venus series will do the same, at least in the mind of the collectors. Go Venus!

The sound on this is really great....I recommend using good headphones :) Songs like Its only love and patch it up has never sounded this good.....awesome sound. Only song in "poor" quality is the duet version.....from acetate and in mono but ill skip that track anyway.
japio wrote on July 17, 2012
almost everything is very clear and sounds still fresh. But what already told is that they used a good clean up software on the duet and sorry i'l have to say but Amazing Grace is a new mix. They removed the backing vocals. There's a bleeding of backing vocals (especially) at the first lines. With headphones on you can hear them in the background
Lefty wrote on July 17, 2012
If you look closely at the song list you'll see that not all songs are unedited. Bridge and Amazing Grace are listed as having "no backing vocals," so some editing probably took place. Didn't Elvis record with the back up singers "live" in the studio anyway? If so, some bleed from the back up singers is almost guaranteed to be on his vocal track.

Especially tracks 6-10 and 12 are fantastic !!! May be the best he ever recorded, but except the sound quality there aint much diffrence to the versions we had before, since in a way most of it is still edited appruptly, and I just wished I could here some of the studio talk at the end...but probably nobody cared to save it anyway. "We Can Make the Morning" is my favourite song 2012 and I still hope there is another take we dont know yet...
