Tracks Young Man

June 15, 2011 | Music

The recorded legacy of Elvis Presley continues to be discovered by new generations that never saw him or heard him perform live. It's hard to appreciate that he started so much of what we take for granted now in popular music. Until 1956, the teenagers of suburban America, and the rest of the world, had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como but everything was about to be tossed upside down.

On January 28 on a cold night in New York, Elvis took America by storm as he appeared on CBS-TV's Stage Show hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. On February 4 for his second appearance he sang a song that literally changed the world of popular music "Heartbreak Hotel". Its unique sound and style literally blew everything before it away while at the same time inducing the blueprint for everything that was to come; by April, it would be #1 on Billboard.

This incredible step-change in musical history resonated around the world and while liberating millions of young adolescent teenagers it also inspired many successful artists of today to pick a guitar or sing - everyone wanted to be like Elvis. The pure spontaneity of these seminal recordings shows through even today; "Heartbreak Hotel", Don't Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "My Baby Left Me" are some of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever made.

Elvis' unprecedented level of achievement is still the benchmark by which artistic success is measured today and YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT is testament to the phenomenon and cultural icon that is Elvis Presley.

OK! Disc 3, Elvis live. So which tracks are from the "complete UNRELEASED concert from the Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport, Louisiana"? Tracks 1 to 4 are from New Frontier Hotel Vegas; Tracks 5 to 11 are from Little Rock, so Tracks 12 to 21 must come from Shreveport!! Anyone want to venture which Louisiana Hayride concert this might be? It's not the last one from Dec 15th, as that came from the Hirsch Youth centre of the Louisiana Fairgrounds, not the Municipal auditorium!

Further to my previous email, I am now convinced this is from the final concert at the Hirsch Youth centre, not as stated i the press release from the Municipal Auditorium. So that would make the date of this recording Dec15th 1956! But great to finally get such a historic concert finally released. Let's hope the sound is reasonable!!

Amazon says $155.00. Thats a lot of money for a few unreleased tracks. Dont care about replicas of items or interviews. I love the 50's and this is a nice set but afraid I'll have to pass. They price this stuff out of reality.

Hi Steve ..well maybe you will change your mind once you have seen the complete cover-art etc...it look freakin awesome, just go to the ElvisMatters website, then you will see how the box is gonna look like once released,on the website it shows the contents, the book etc.

Yes Jesse its prob very nice and I play 50's & early 60's Elvis more than any other but I think its way overpriced. Perhaps if I can find a discount on it. A someone pointed out the legacy release will be at the same time so it makes this look even more expensive. I already have the FTD release of Elvis Presley. When can u say enough of the same?

It is a nice overview and maybe a good chance to get the September 1-3 recordings in form of the new digital masters from Sony, but I would have preferred all existing outtakes of "Rip it up" in correct order much more than those we already have from Lawdy & Shake. And the 4 Las Vegas songs we already had twice. In the add they talk about the CBS TV Stage shows, but why is there none of them here ? They would need a re-release with new digital masters.

This does appear pretty pricey on Amazon but at the official site elvis1956.com it's much cheaper at $109 (US). The set seems pretty nice and well done. It's hard to justify when you own the complete masters set but it's still tempting. Of course when you factor in the price of the FTD CDs it's not that pricey of a set. I give SONY / Legacy credit for this set. This is the quality of set we need to see more of. I'd like to see a set like this for 1977. That might be a good way to repackage the Elvis in Concert recordings and the other spring recordings (that were used on Moody Blue).

The upcoming ‘Elvis Presley: Legacy Edition’, by coincidence also released September 27th, is a straight copy of the first two discs in this set!! Retailing around $17.00. Actually it's good, it's an opportunity to get the remastered versions as used on the Masters box set, & also of course not everyone will be able to afford the "young Man" box set. Good push by RCA or who-ever it is now!

Contains Disc 3 indeed new material or is it the same going round on import or even regular cds?
Jerome wrote on June 16, 2011
is it possible to only order disc 5?..
benny scott wrote on June 16, 2011
Hi Natha, disc 3, tracks 1-11 were peviously released in the past on different CDs. Tracks 12-21 are the tracks of december 15th 1956, The Louisiana Hayride, Shreveport. ( see Keith Flinn's site , btw: what a great site this is !) tracks 12,13,16-20 were (are ,untill sept.27) unreleased untill now. Tracks 14,15 and 21 were also already released in the past. That gives us 7 unreleased tracks out of 21 .Best regards. Always El.

Sounds like a nice set and agreed the artwork looks awesome but when you can buy the first 2 albums on the legacy edition for a fraction of the price it makes it look way over priced. I don't think it's one for the general public but one for the collectors and if that's what they are aiming for why don't they just release the live stuff on an FTD?
Natha wrote on June 16, 2011
Hi Benny Scott, thanks for the info. I just love that fifties materials. SO it thrills me when really unreleased songs / performances come out. So I will definitely try to get this set. Elvisly yours
whetherman wrote on June 16, 2011
Benny, I'd love to be able to check it on Keith Flynn's site but unfortunately it's off-line at the moment and before it went off-line it wasn't updated since January. I miss it a lot as, I used it regularly. Have you any idea when it might be back with us? Also about this 5CD set....oh hell, what a lot of money for 7 unreleased tracks! But I still want them, especially the early live versions of When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again and Paralyzed, that's really something new. I'll have to give this a lot of thought as to whether I go for it or not.
benny scott wrote on June 16, 2011
whetherman, Keith's site is back right now, I checked it this afternoon before I wrote an answer for Natha . The site has been updated to this day, june 16th, according to Keith's announcement. You'll find all the info about the songs of December 15th, 1956. Just go to "essential lists", then "live 1954-1961". Always El.

Great title; great artwork; great tracks. Why isn't this sort of thing being released as a single CD for general public consumption? Pick the best of the tracks and promote the darned thing, put out Trying To Get To You or Heartbreak Hotel as the single and 'bob's yer Uncle'.
Natha wrote on June 17, 2011
Hi Benny Scott, I just glanced thru' Keith Flynn Site. Indeed a wealth of information! Thanks for the reference. Like Whetherman, I visited it before but didn't know it was back. Your friend Natha

Then what. Are they going to trick us again by selling it haff the price six months later: like they did with The Complete Elvis?
Harvey Alexander wrote on June 19, 2011
So wait six months before you buy it, then you'll get it cheaper. Sorted.
