The Brits have dubbed Queen front man Freddy Mercury the greatest rock legend of all time in a new survey out today. Elvis Presley narrowly missed out on the rock n' roll crown coming in second, while Woodstock veteran Jimi Hendrix was hot on his heels in third place.
Other contenders include Brit rockers Slash, Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.
The research commissioned to coincide with the launch of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, also reveals the most memorable moment in rock history is Ozzy Osbourne biting off a bat's head on stage. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a video game that allows players to strum along to rock hits.

Elvis not #1. No Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee. These guys were gods in the UK. I guess the older people that are still around are either too old, too tired, or just too disinterested to vote anymore. Bon Jovi? Bon Jovi? There's only one King & it ain't Freddie Mercury.

Bon Jovi is a joke. He doesn't belong here at all. At least if youre gonna vote an Italian Jersey rocker on the list make it Springsteen. Old Scudder - with the way these votes went, I'm grateful Elvis was even no. 2. Ozzy? Slash? Oh my. You know those who voted for these dont know who Gene, Eddie, Jerry Lee, Chuck, or Fats is. Meatloaf? One hit LP? Please!

The poll of course omitted to tell the age group of those who voted and as theoldscudder pointed out this reflects to the advantage of some of the names on the list who couldn't hold a candle to names such as Buddy Holly,Eddie Cochran and of course Elvis who's status and achievements are beyond any doubt.
