Just like ElvisMatters member Michael Van Werven, we attended the promotional concert of Tom Jones for his latest album "Praise & Blame", last Friday in Holland (at the Melkweg). A one of a kind event, as only 700 fans were allowed in Tom talked about Elvis and their 'Vegas Days' and performed the song 'Run On'.
Must have been the 16th or 17th time I saw his show, but this was by far the best, a bit short (he only played his last CD and Green Green Grass) but I enjoyed it from the first to the last second.
Nothing backhanded about this at all. He is a great singer & great fan of Elvis and has been for many years, plus he just released the best album of his career, possibly the best album of 2010. It's a great compliment to for any artist to have your latest work praised as some of the best of your career. This only happened to Elvis once, in 1969.
Great man Tom Jones. He shows gratitude and appreciation. Again, he showed the enormous influece Elvis had in the music business. TJ's latest musical achievements were inspired by Elvis!
It was a fantastic concert. I have great admiration for Tom - as did Elvis. What's this nonsense about Tom 'bashing' Elvis in interviews? 'He does it at least 2 times in a year'? If you make those kind of alligations, you should back them up by quotes and sources.
I have NEVER heard TJ 'bash' Elvis. If you are referring to the bathroom story, you call that bashing? I call it an amusing story. You folks are way too sensitive at times. As far as the desert island disks, he picked Whole Lotta Shakin Going On by JLL. Its one of greatest songs of all time. Nothing wrong with that.
Has anybody else noticed that the negative Tom Jones comments come from the same direction as the hatred for Ernst, all of the FTD releases, Sony and EPE?
First the positive, Tom Jones is a terrific performer. His latest album is amazing for a man his age. Now comes the negative. I am sorry to say a lot (not all) Elvis fans are unsophisticated cry babies. Tom picks Jerry Lee over Elvis, So what. That dosen't mean he's dissing Elvis. Just means he digs Jerry Lee more. I believe he has that right. Get a life, Elvis isn't every ones favorite singer. He's mine but I'm open minded about another person liking someone else.
I never heard such bull like that TJ prefers Jery Lee over Elvis he always talks about Elvis ,Elvis and he were very good friends,he and Jerry lee are not friends and i never hear some of Jerry Lee's influence back in TJ"s music Elvis However does just take a listen to TJ's last album
The reason why JGB never hears Jerry Lee's influence in Tom's music is because he isn't familiar with Tom's music. Listen to the final track of the album Tom Jones & Jools Holland, The End of the Road (by Jerry Lewis). And as for his comment that Tom and Jerry are not friends: well, we don't know that, do we? Neither Tom nor Jerry is likely to inform Jesse Garon Presley whether a friendship exists. However, we do know that Jerry appeared on Tom's tv show in the sixties and that Tom came over to Jerry's house to play him the Jools Holland album when it was finished, so it's likely they are friends.
Tom Jones has always name checked Jerry Lee Lewis one of his favourite rock'n'roll singers in interviews going back many years. With all of the troubles in the world, some people get upset at him choosing "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" on "Desert Island Discs"!
I do sometimes feel a little sadness at the long careers that people like Tom Jones and Cliff Richard have had. Not because of them, because I like them both very much, but because Elvis could have had a career like this if he had lived his life differently. They are both seventy years of age and still performing and recording new work. If only.
Martin DJ who is JGB?? and me not familiar with Tom Jomes music?? little wrong there, it's very likely TJ and Jerry Lee are friends so were Jerry Lee and Elvis so clearing this misunderstanding i have no problem with that, yes Jerry Lee is one of his favorite singers but Elvis is his all time favorite just listen to TJ talking about Elvis i just watched a interview with TJ on BBC and TJ mentions his new album and how Elvis had an influence on that album ( Run On) and and he talks about Elvis like it was his brother and you hear a lot of Elvis's in influence in TJ music but because i'm not that much into Jerry Lee's music that's why maybe i don't notice that influence of Jerry Lee in TJ's music so Martin DJ don't assume something before you say that i am not familiar with TJ's his music besides that i know a lot more of TJ then you can imagine.
