The Wonder Of Downloads

April 17, 2005 | Music
Elvis Presley's latest single re-issue single "The Wonder Of You" has entered the official UK singles chart at #4 this week. Despite outselling the #1 record in the midweek sales the introduction of legal download to the sales had a big impact on the endresult.

Crying In The Chapel, crashes 2-33 - the biggest dip from number two in chart history, though its fall would be 2-24 on physical sales alone.

Many fans also downloaded the song from official download companies, but it appears that if you type in "The Wonder Of You" you actually download an album track which doesn't count towards sales according to an update on The Elvis Express.

The Top 5 singles:
01 (is This The Way To) Amarillo - Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
02 Somewhere Else - Razorlight
03 1,2 Step - Ciara ft Missy Elliot
04 The Wonder Of You- Elvis Presley
05 Switch - Will Smith

Great news given that we are into the combined download/discs. Shame tho' it happened this week as iy seems Elvis may have got the no.1 slot this week otherwise.Fans experience of downloading TWOY from none counting sources does highlight the problem for the future tho'.Rereleased material will always have this problem and therefore reemphasises the need for single releases to be new or not available material ie alt.takes, remixes or long deleted tracks to have strongest chance of success. A plus side is most reckon that the downloads being integrated will mean the charts reflect a more diverse/older range of tastes hence improving E's chances.Fingers crossed for "Way Down" next week -the first Elvis single I bought only days before Elvis's death . Still contemporary sounding and promoting seventies Elvis to a wider audience.BMG -how are you now going onto capitalise on this successful promotional campaign

Nothings easy is it? A little tip: When you download "Way Down" this week, make sure it shows a picture of the single, along with the same track listing as the cd single, so you get the right one. The Virgin download site has all these so you can't go wrong. It's only 99p, small price to pay for seeing the big E back in the top spot. Of course, HMV, Woolworths, Napster and god knows how many others offer downloads, but make sure you're getting the single, not an album track. It would have been great to see this at No1, as it is genuinely popular with the younger crowd. Ho Hum, No4 is still an acheivement though.

No matter what! It's still a great achievement to get TWOY this high in the combined charts! Times are changing! Elvis remains!

Sad though this may sound, but if Michael Howard is going to use A Little Less Conversation in the run up to the election, then he better start SOON. We need the plays even if the song is to be a tag on the end of a Conservative Party Election Broadcast! Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I downloaded my copy from MSN Music. Does anyone know if these are counted for the charts? Please answer asap so that I will "Way Down" from some other source if the need arises. Thanks.

Hi EJF, Not sure about MSN, I downloaded from HMV as I know this counts toward the chart. You also have to ensure you pick the correct title from the Way Downs listed, to make sure you have not picked up an album track! Think that must be what went wrong with The Wonder of You, if it only got 79 downloads! Here's to knocking Tony Christie off the top slot, I'm fed up of that one now!

Just downloaded 'Way Down' from the 'woolworths' website, very easy to do and just 79p per track. just a question, do you have to download all 3 tracks on the CD for it to count for the singles charts?
