Having been born in 1943 I can confirm that Frank Sinatra and Johnnie Ray were very very big in their day before Elvis came along.

I've just realised it's chronological order so ignore the early part of my rant... whoops!

I don't know why I care but I do? I mean, I love Sinatra but Elvis in third place behind Johnnie Ray... please. And as soon as you read "Regardless of how badly he squandered his gift in the 1960s and 1970s", you know you are reading article written by someone who can actually look at a concert from 1970 and comment as to how fat he looks - it's the Elvis equivalent of George Orwell's Animal Farm - "50s Elvis good, 70s Elvis bad". I was born in 1964 - I became a fan of 70s Elvis first and worked my way backwards... I listen to 68-70 more than any other era... though I love it all!
