The Searcher

February 09, 2018 | Music

Sony Music will release Elvis Presley: The Searcher (The Original Soundtrack) on April 6 in three versions, a single CD, a Deluxe 3 CD set in 8"x 8" with a 40-page book in slipcase and a 2 LP Record set.

The new multi-part documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, directed by Thom Zimny and airing on HBO on April 14, pushes past the larger-than-life image of The King of Rock and Roll, portraying him instead as a man and an artist 'who wanted to heal, to find that thing that was always felt to be missing, and to do it through the music'.

This soundtrack features 18 songs as heard in the film including familiar hit recordings ('Heartbreak Hotel', 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?'), powerful vocal performances ('That's All Right', 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time', 'Trouble/Guitar Man') and rare outtakes ('Suspicious Minds', 'Separate Ways').

It's late as I comment so I might be a bit stupid and missing the point here. Do I take it that the documentary has just 18 tracks which probably adds up to 50 minutes maximum and the rest is talking. My initial expectations, if this is the case, have been hit somewhat, and have been replaced with a sinking feeling.

I'm going to make no assumptions as to how the songs fit into the story and what they may mean to the overall length and breadth of the story. I'll tune in and watch. I do know that I won't be buying any of the companion CDs, etc.

The selection might work in the documentary, but as an album? A mix of studio/live and home recordings? I don't think that this tracklist is flowing.

Hi Benny, thanks and as usual, always a voice of reason and sanity. Looks a whole lot more promising now.

Do we need this as die hard fans?
Gorse wrote on February 10, 2018
Yes we do need this blackdiamond. I have been a fan for over 55 years and often listen to Elvis when working out in my gym. However a staunch supporter like myself still needs something new every so often to keep me interested and ticking over. The RPO releases received a good bashing, but I now only play them and my own compilations very intermittently, along with the big stars of the past like Abba The Beatles and Queen etc.

Elvis' eyes are colored BROWN on the cover photo (even though he had BLUE eyes). Perplexing to say the least. The only thing interesting to me on this CD set is the recording of "Home Sweet Home" by Gladys Presley... and that will probably appear on YouTube soon after the release of this set.

Not much enticing here. CD 3 is the most interesting, hearing songs that meant something to Elvis. The Gladys cut is more a curious listen than anything else. Hear it once, then forget about it. I dont see where Wooden Heart plays into this being on here twice but I guess the doc will enlighten us. Id rather have Petty on here doing Baby Lets Play House or Bruce doing Viva Las Vegas, much more meaningful songs IMO. I dont expect big sales sorry to say. I just dont see the target audience here other than the Elvis fan who has to have every release. By the way, Best Buy, a big chain here in America has just announced they will stop selling CDs this year, so again I expect low to moderate physical sales.

Another "quick buck" sales excuse. Don't think so.
TheMemphisFan wrote on February 15, 2018
Steve V, virtually everyone in the U.S. that is aware of Best Buy stores are also aware of Amazon.com Low to moderate sales will have absolutely nothing to do with the Best Buy stores not carrying CDs. If the sales are indeed "low to moderate" it'll be because there's not much in this set to get excited about. I hope it sells very well, but I'm not interested after seeing the track list.

Best Buy? I haven't bought anything there in many years. No loss. I buy all my music online. Won't be buying this.
