The Definitive Elvis

November 22, 2004 | Music
Readers Digest offices around the world will be releasing a new Elvis boxset, most likely in the second half of 2005. The individual offices have the choice of releasing either a 4 or 5 CD set.

For the fans that buy everything, start saving your money because it looks like you are going to need it in 2005 . More of the same.

Lord have mercy !!! Not another BOXSET !!! Who needs this anyway ? It´s always the same on these BOXSETS, or ONE outtake of an song that we have already on CD. There are too much of these BOXSETS outthere !!! Elvisly yours.

I rather share that opinion. The Colonel strangled Elvis' movie career in mediocrity and RCA is doing the same with his recording career by releasing a deluge of material that most fans can't keep up with to buy even if they want to own it all. Between CD's, DVD's and books I can't hardly afford my Elvis habit and I own less than half of the Follow That Dream releases. I own more than 180 Elvis titles and I still haven't anything close to what's available. Heaven forbid I try and accumulate all the bootlegs (they seem to number around 300!). They want to get big numbers for sales but continue to release things 3 and 4 at a time. Just like the DVD sets recently released for the Comeback Special and Aloha from Hawaii, I think they each cut each other's throat! They would have gotten bigger sale numbers for each if they had simply released them 3 months apart! I bought both together but then I find a way to afford that which I want very badly. Just my opinion (everyone has one!)

How can they call it "The Definitive Elvis"...when a documentary with that same name has already been released? I realize this is a cd set..but still the name shouldn't be allowed to be used again... IMHO

Thank you Rejane, my English is not so good but you put in words what i want to say about the way BMG is messing around with Elvis music. You can bring out CD's but do it in a sensible way. The same remarks for DVD's. And i keep repeating it, a good remix, promotion and Tv keeps Elvis in demand with younger people.

These comments are ridiculous. How can you criticise something before it's even released? On the grounds you can't afford all the releases? Well, frankly, that's tough luck. Maybe I'm somewhat privileged in that I can afford every offical new release and about 2 new 'imports' per week but do I resent Ferrari launching different versions of the same car - nope, besides I'm more than than with my RX8... A couple of fundamentals of marketing - channel management and segmentation. As a Startegic Marketing COnsultant, may I suggest people try to understand before they criticse...

It is not good marketing just because you can afford everything they throw your way that has the name Elvis on it.

Actually 'good marketing' is 'sustainable value creation' therefore using your own words, that's exactly what this boxset is!

Cutting up everything in a lot of pieces, i do'nt believe that is good marketing. BMG should handle Elvis with a lot of care and give us great CD's that have staying power. As i said before, for the fans there is the FTD label and look there are 40 titles available on that label and more are anounced everyday. But for the non fan you could bring something new every two or three years and keep promotion going for those albums, that to me is good marketing and gives Elvis the sales for a good CD he realy deserves.
