The 50 Biggest Hits In Australian Chart History

January 13, 2005 | Book
Each year one song outperforms all others to be the highest-selling single in Australia. Chart statistician Gavin Ryan has compiled the 50 biggest-selling singles in Australian chart history. "Can't Help Falling In Love" is Elvis Presley's only entry as being the biggest seller in 1962. In 1961 Elvis had the number 2 song of the year with "Wooden Heart".

Elvis had a single in the top 10 every year from 1959 to 1965. No other artist has done such a thing, the Beatles only having a top 10 year end hit in four of their charting years. "Can't Help Falling In Love" was not Elvis' biggest-charting song, that honour goes to "It's Now Or Never" in 1960, but this song did spend 5 Months in the charts, and was the number 1 single for 1962. It was also Elvis' sixth No. 1 song of 11 in Australia.

A lot of fans do'nt like Wooden heart, but fact is that it is the biggest Elvis hit in Germany , Belgium, Holland and i believe in a few other countrys, and another fact is that it also would have been a US number1 for Elvis back in 1960.61. This was the number RCA gave Holland and Belgium when Elvis died in 1977 as a re release. It is a number that children and a lot of parents like so i just see it as another side of Elvis talent. This is no big thing but it sure was a big hit.

In Asia in the 60s, WOODEN HEART was Number One in the Charts and is still a much loved all-time favorite in most Asian countries. So is CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE and IT'S NOW OR NEVER. These 3 great songs are amongst my personal Elvis favorites. I hope they will all make it to the Top of the UK Charts again when release as part of the 18 No.1 Hits Campaign.
