Tens Of Thousands Watch Candlelight Vigil Online

August 17, 2005 | Other
AOL's 'live' coverage of this year's Candlelight Vigil at Graceland was, by all accounts, a huge "viewing" success, with tens of thousands of fans around the world watching it on their computers and many more via the PBS TV stations showing it. The Vigil is archived by EPE and can be watched at any time. With guest celebrities, plenty of Elvis performances and the atmosphere of walking up to the driveway to the Meditation Garden, tune in and experience a great Vigil. EPE placed the crowd actually at Graceland at more than 10,000. Elvis World's Bill Burk suggests it was closer to 4,000 (the second smallest on record).

You can watch the Vigil 2005 (and the other ones) on the Official Elvis Presley Website.

Great publicity whatever the numbers. Here in Irelandtoo the radio stations were playing Elvis Presley's most famous songs. The BBC as well.

Let me say first as a 28 yr old Elvis fan for 20yrs I am glad we have Bill Burk he is an asset to Elvis Fans. With that said I have heard him be wrong on several things on more than one occassion, I am not gonna go into detail because this is not about him. I am going to have to say 10,000sounds a lot more on the money. Hell I have been 6 times not in August because the heat is the same as here in GA. I swear it looked like close to 4,000 different people were there then. Also EPE I think would have a more accurate system or method on the number of people, since people = money I can assure you some of the vampires sucking the barrel dry that claim to care about Elvis are keeping up to see if they are losing people or not and how to bring them back. I think if the turn out was that bad they would have done something like well with the switch over and changing of hands Ect.... I really should not be that negative EPE I guess, I know there are people there that care about him and his image. I think the younger generation like myself telling my little girl about elvis and listening to him in the car and her (3yrs) old telling me to play it again we the fans are the ones that keep the money coming in and 4,000 just doesnt sound right.

In 1999 I was in a non-Elvis related candlelight vigil with over 30,000 people here in Texas. Based on that crowd and what I saw on the Vigilcast, I'd say the 10,000 figure is more in linewith actual attendance. I was excited to fond out that my local PBS station carried the Vigilcast and I will be sure to show them my appreciation to make sure it happens every year.
