On this very day, in 1956 the single "Hound Dog" was the #1 single in the U.S. Today "Hound Dog" is a new entry at #14 on the U.K. singles chart. The single "Suspicious Minds" drops to #46, "Blue Suede Shoes" to #59 and "My Baby Left Me" drops to #67. On the Album chart the "The King" compilation drops from #2 to #4.
The single sales on the latest campaign are selling roughly a third of the original campaign.
However, things have changed drastically since the last campaign.
For one, most of the major supermarkets stocked 'physical' singles last time around. Since then, two majors i.e. Tesco's and Asda have stopped stocking them.
In the UK there are only three places to purchase the singles: HMV; Virgin and Woolworths unless you purchase online.
Furthermore, downloads now form part of the official sales. And airplay, whilst not part of the sales, contributes greatly to exposure enabling people to buy them.
Since the start of the new campaign no Elvis single has been in the Top 50 Download or Airplay Charts. Little wonder then that the singles are not doing so well this time around.

On the Dutch Single Top 100 "Suspicious Minds is a new entry at #41 with "Blue Suede Shoes" as a new entry at #91. A cover of "Suspicious Minds" by Rene Shuman and Angel Eye drops from #92 to #93. On the Dutch Album chart the "Dutch Collection" remains #1. On the Dutch Back Catalogue Top 50 "ELV1S 30 #1 Hits" climbs from #28 to #12 in its 80th week on the chart.
On the Dutch Free Record Shop Album Top 20 "Elvis - The Dutch Collection" remains #12 while on the Music DVD Top 20 volume 1 of "The Definitive Collection" climbs to #9 from #15 and volume 2 re-enters the chart at #10.
In Ireland "Hound Dog" is a new entry at #25 while "Suspicious Minds" drops from #21 to #33, the other singles dropped off the Top 50 singles chart.
On the Irish Album Top 100 "The King" drops from #3 to #5 while "ELV1S 30 #1 Hits" drops from #46 to #82.
In Denmark the "'68 Comeback Special" drops from #2 to #4 while the "Aloha From Hawaii" special remains steady at #5 on the Music DVD Top 10.

For to complete the importance to concentrate to put Mr. Elvis presley on first place in RIAA. Latest from the RIAA: The Beatles continue to hold a significant lead over Elvis in the Biggest Selling Artist (Album sales) category in the USA, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Went down to HMV on Grafton Street here in Ireland at lunchtime looking for "Hound Dog". All sold out, which is fantastic news (except for me as I'm still looking for a copy of the single). What isn't such fantastic news is that they only got 30 copies of the single in the first place... 15 vinyl and 15 cd, with no plans to get any more in. What a complete joke. Don't know what the situation is like in the UK but what chance does Elvis have of even charting in the top 10 or securing a #1 (from us fans who want to buy the singles and complete the box set), if deliveries are not made, and when they are made to a major retailer, only 30 copies are delivered.

Whilst I agree that Elvis has sold more than those quoted, I still think that 1 billion is way over the top, and I am not even sure that he tops The Beatles. The Beatles albums in the USA alone were selling between 2 - 5 million copies each and that was when they were initally released. I think their better selling albums are averaging around 7.5 million each to date. One of Elvis' best albums from the 60's Blue Hawaii managed around 3.5 million when released in the USA whilst Elvis Is Back only managed around 350,000. So I wouldn't be quite so dismissive of The Beatles sales figures.

I have spent all day contacting every Elvis fan in the world to find out just how many Elvis records they have bought through the years. It was a tough job and I didn't even have time to stop for a tea break. Anyway, I've just added all the numbers up and it comes to a grand total of 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,005. So there. Now we all know how many records he's sold. To Mr Quinn : thanks a lot for your detailed information & data ; do you know if the 2 CD set Elvis The King will , or will help , filling up the gap thats separates from Queen as artist with most weeks spent in the UK album chart ? The Viva Las Vegas is now # 61 (from 54) in the US comprehensive chart.
