Speedway Actor Died

May 10, 2016 | People

Born in Los Angeles, California, William Schallert began acting while still a student at the University of Southern California, and moved into television (mainly in supporting roles) in the early 1950s.

Schallert is best remembered as Martin Lane on The Patty Duke Show (1963-66), and for Elvis fans, he was Abel Esterlake (screen father to Ellie Esterlake, who Elvis sang Your Time Hasn't Come Yet, Baby to) in Speedway (released 1968).

He is also remembered for playing the role of Nilz Baris in the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" with his last TV appearance in 2014 on an episode of the sitcom 2 Broke Girls.

With almost 400 screens credits (film and television) to his name, and as a one-time Screen Actors Guild President (1971-1981), William Schallert will continue to be remembered and seen on screens the world over. Schallert died suddenly in his Pacific Palisades home on Sunday, 8 May. He was 93. RIP William Schallert (July 6 1922 - May 8 2016).

Elvis was a mega superstar. Everyone knew his name. He died at 42. William Schallert was a working man's actor who was steadily employed throughout his career. His was not a household name known to everyone. He lived into his nineties. Personally, I would choose his life.

I always enjoyed William's acting. I was a small child when the patty Duke Show was on and enjoyed his role. I have always liked his role in Speedway, as he was so believable in his role. RIP William, thanks so much for the great memories.
