Special Elvis Week 2003 Additions

Following are two fully updated event listings as now found in the Elvis Week 2003 calendar: August 11: Graceland/EPE salutes songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote Jailhouse Rock and other hits for Elvis Presley. Meet Mike Stoller and hear stories of the duo's collaboration with Elvis and watch related footage. Autograph session during the evening. (Confirmation of possible attendance by Jerry Leiber is pending.) Then there will be an audience-participation screening of the film Jailhouse Rock, with all the fans invited to sing, dance and act along and, if they so desire, attend dressed as inspired by the film. Admission is a $5.00 cover charge at the door, no reservations or advance tickets. August 16: The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, 255 North Main in downtown Memphis. A special screening of material from Elvis Presley's 1968 television special, Elvis, and his 1973 television special Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii. This is in commemoration of the 35th and 30th anniversaries of these magnificent performances and in anticipation of the related new special edition video/DVD releases coming from Elvis Presley Enterprises and BMG Home Entertainment in the fall of 2003. Screened in their entirety will be the two sit-down jam session shows and the two stand-up solo shows from which the Elvis in black leather portions of the original 1968 TV special were derived, and the 1973 Aloha special (the broadcast concert). Information about other material to be screened and other details about the evening will be posted as plans near finalization. The Cannon Center, a new venue which opened early this year, was built on the site of the former Ellis Auditorium, where Elvis attended gospel music shows in his youth, where his high school graduation ceremony was held, and where he performed early in his career. The Cannon Center was created with an excellence in acoustics that rivals the great performance halls of the world. It is the perfect venue for this special screening event. Tickets are $25.00. Ticket proceeds above the cost of the event benefit the Elvis Presley Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis.
