Sittin' On Top Of The World

September 02, 2011 | Music

With so many bootleg releases out - several per week if you collect them all - no new import CD really surprises us anymore. Until just now, when we got the announcement for the new two-CD set, "Sittin' On Top of the World," (the midnight show at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 12, 1970). This release offers, for the first time ever, the complete one and a half hour reel of the August 12, 1970 Midnight Show in Las Vegas, in the original, stereo mix recorded back in 1970. But the most amazing thing, apart from the 24-page booklet in full color, is an amazing bonus gift: an exact copy of Elvis’ personal tortoise shell guitar pick, as may be seen during the TTWII rehearsals, on display in Graceland, or in the book "Elvis by the Presleys." Buyers get one of two kinds in this limited-edition set: heavy, for the electric guitar, or medium, for acoustic guitar. Just like Elvis used! This will for sure become a collectable all on its own. So... even Elvis's guitar picks are now bootlegged...

Tracklist:

DISC 1 – A Thing Called Love / On The Other Side / Opening Theme / That’s All Right / Mystery Train - Tiger Man / Monologue / Hound Dog / Monologue / Love Me Tender / Just Pretend / Walk A Mile In My Shoes / There Goes My Everything / Words / Sweet Caroline / You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ / Polk Salad Annie / Audience Walk.

DISC 2 - Introductions / Heartbreak Hotel /One Night / Blue Suede Shoes / All Shook Up / Little Sister - Get Back / I Was The One / Love Me / Are You Lonesome Tonight / Bridge Over Troubled Water / Suspicious Minds / Can’t Help Falling In Love / Closing Vamp.

This has been a long time coming and at last GRM gives us what a lot of imports can't do,just look at the package for this release and the contents are as good as it get's........if you want to get one import make sure it's this one.

Hi on the surface looks like a really good release by a label with a fine reputation. Could anybody please shed some light apart from the pre show tracks what is likely to be the major improvements on what has been issued on the TTWII set? Thanks.

Hello, this may be the best show our man ever gave in Las Vegas but how amazing were Elvis's performances in the 1950s? Also I think the stand-up shows recorded for the '68 Special rocked at least as much as Elvis's best LV album, Elvis In Person. There Goes My Everything, Sweet Caroline, BOTW, a kissy version of Love Me Tender and Audience Walk? Not for me, thank you.

Rough mix is a disguised form of re-release. Rough mix of "Fifth Time Around". Rough mix of Richmond show. Rough mix of the TTWII shows. Rough mix is great. But all those rough mixes cost a lot of money ... and there's mostly nothing real new. How many well known shows are in the pipe .. rough mixed?
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on September 02, 2011
Audiance walk? are you kidding, i dont wont to sit through that. I agree santa!

This show was released 11 years ago with some editings on "That's the way it is-Special edition".

Was also released in 2009 on TTWII The Complete Works CD5 by International. Glad I have this beauty in my possession! Always El.

This show has already been issued in perfect stereo sound, both officially and as a bootleg. If by "complete" they mean the inclusion of the opening act, I can live without that. A replica guitar pick is a gimmick I can live without too. I hope that rough mixes or "original stereo" mixes aren't the new fad. As far as this release goes, my guess is that the sound will be a step down from what has been issued previously. The "best live concert ever recorded by Elvis Presley" is debatable. Of course the show is great, but the best concert ever recorded by Elvis...that's a matter of personal taste.

Surprise, Surprise! Bootleggers are coming out with free gifts (in this case, in the form of a replica guitar) to sell their stuffs. This will not persuade me to buy this CD. We have the best in our collection. Bootleg CD's especially concerts more often than not produces poor sound quality. And whoever wrote that the replica guitar will be a collectors edition, think again. We are no kids! Not a good marketing strategy.

fantastic news - this is how ftd/sony or whoever they are these days should have released the Aug '70 concerts - unedited! not too late ftd though ...

I will not waste any money on this. The official release is great and I dont need a few minutes of audience walk and the band introduction in inferior sound.
glynalone wrote on September 03, 2011
Alternatively there's the free internet download of "The Complete Works" in stereo that International put out after they realised the mistake of the original CDs being mastered in mono. Seems to have everything including The Imperials songs, the introductions missing from CD2 of the official TTWII box and even the audience walk (actually included as a bonus at the end of the Opening Show download). That said, this looks a beautiful package, GRM have a great track record and I'm sure they'll have produced something worth adding to the collection (if it's only the booklet and the guitar pick!)

A guitar pick really. Nice cover anyway.
Ciscoking wrote on September 04, 2011
The reason for me..which speaks for this release is that I will finally have the show complete..it`s my all time favorite concert...
benny scott wrote on September 04, 2011
Hi Cisco, apart grom the fact this release will be in stereo, what do you mean by "complete" ? Are you talking about the 2 songs of the pre-show and/or "audience-walk, monologues,.. ? Just asking, 'cause I'm interested to know ! (the guitarpick doesn't interest me at all, though I'm a guitar player myself, so I'm happy with the several "SUN-guitarpicks I have) Always El.
benny scott wrote on September 04, 2011
Thank you OnStage ! Ordered my copy a couple of minutes ago. Worthwhile to have it in stereo and 13 minutes more running time . A nice addition to my ( well-calculated) collection! Always El.
glynalone wrote on September 04, 2011
As I stated earlier, I'm pretty sure International's free internet download of five shows from their "Complete Works" set includes this entire show in stereo. Albeit split over three CDs because of its length. By my calculation, the total running time is almost exactly 90 minutes: the show itself including the monologues and introductions on CD4, with the audience walk as a bonus on CD1, The Imperials tracks and the orchestral opening as bonuses on CD5. So all of this show is still sitting there today for free...along with the opening show and the 11th, 12th and 13th dinner shows...in glorious stereo. But that guitar pick is just too tempting!
Ciscoking wrote on September 04, 2011
As I said before..I see it as the complete package of this show..from start to finish. May be not everybody`s cup of tea cause some might be pleased with what is already out. for me it is a great addition to my collection..
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on September 04, 2011
No not my cup of tea, this is were edits actually are a good thing, dont wont to sit through his smooching the ladies. But ladys were his main paying customers, most of the guys were there to please there gf's/wifes. Thats probally why i prefer his shows away from vegas, not all that kissing lol.
circleG wrote on September 05, 2011
Wether a concert is or is not 'complete' with the audience walk is a fair point but ... and big BUT... a complete concert is either complete or it isn't. The TTWII box released back in 2000 was edited for dialogue and 'walk' which did stunt my enjoyment a little as there was a fair jump in the edit. Its Elvis , its 1970 and its the king at his best so to me unedited means unedited. On a side note its good to see we don't all like Elvis for the same eras or even tours!

Got mine today..really stunning package..fold out digi-pack with many potos..booklet ..yes..and the guitar pick. You cannot get a better layout for a 2 cd set..the show stands out as one of the best....as we all know..

I also sometimes mess with a acoustic Guitar so I might try this Guitar pick out for fun lol.

Rca, ftd, ernst etc never cared, its simple they make profit off a artist they dont have to pay, show disrespect by releasing junk, over priced books, poor sound, rude to fans, ignored concerns and questions. Imports also make money, but are dont by fans, these people are more open with fans well most of the time, and give better artwork and in alot of cases better sound. Ftd comes out with some nice ones sometimes, but too much junk leaps out and they choose what releases they will give proper treatment to. Look at the artwork from GR and look at ftd's with there cheap artwork and many times no booklets, no booklets and its a collectors label.

One final thought, why is ttwii special edition out of print from rca? It just makes releases like this more sought after, its elvis in his prime, yet elvis in concert is still in print?
