Shania, Does Elvis

November 26, 2003 | People
Shania Twain, whose first NBC special this year was taped in front of 50,000 fans at Chicago's Grant Park, wanted to take another tack for a new special. She modeled "Up! Close" after Elvis Presley's December 1968 NBC special — widely known as his "comeback special" — right down to wearing a black leather jumpsuit onstage.

I personally thought Britney Spears looked brilliant in a jumpsuit. Todays idols are based upon visual effects and not their musical ability.

Hello. You know thats kind of funny. I flipped on the TV last night and saw Shania on NBC. The first thing I said to my wife was that her stage looked like Elvis' 68 Comeback show, except with different colors. I think the was pretty neat, however - somewtimes I still get a little upset when I see people try to do things like that. In a way to me it's kind of disrespectful... just considering the overall enormous popularity of Elvis and what he is to the world for that matter. So I guess I have mixed feelings on the Shania show. But on the other hand, I do understand the importance of the younger generation and there reasons for doing things like this. I thought the Britney Spears Live from Las Vegas show a few years back was completely out of control. That girl doesn't even have the talent to "hold" a jumpsuit - let alone wear one. The worst thing I could possibly see now is Eminem dressed in the Aloha from Hawaii jumpsuit and exiting a helicopter in Honolulu. I would certainly draw the line there. To all my fellow Elvis croonies, have a great Thanksgiving everybody.

The only time I have seen Shania have the much needed "edge" that onstage performers need to even come close to Elvis was the awards show years ago when she sang her first hit "I Feel Like a Woman" and she had her hair up and wore more makeup and stood with legs apart at the microphone. She has an average voice...which after a few minutes of her Up Close and Personal TV show prompted me to channel surf. I came back now and then, but she was still nothing special. She does not look as good with her hair down, and yes, she had an Elvis jumpsuit on, but it looked like a cheap version of it, especially that belt. Just goes to show once again that no matter what anybody does...Elvis did it first and better !!
