Prince From Another Planet

The Sony Music Panel will disclose details of the upcoming release of “Prince From Another Planet” during Elvis Week. This presentation on August 17 in the Graceland Tent will include a screening of the never-before-seen footage from Elvis’ performance in Madison Square Garden in June 1972. We expect that 'Prince From Another Planet' will be the long anticipated Legacy PLUS release of the Vic Anesini (hopefully) remastered Madison Square Garden Shows. As far as we know, this 40 Years After package comes with 2 CDs (afternoon and evening show from June 10th - both remixed by Michael Brauer), a 40 minute DVD and a 48 page booklet, with liner notes by Patti Smith's guitarist Lenny Kaye who attended the June 10th show as young reporter for Rolling Stone Magazine. Release date is September 28th.

I got my copy of I am an Elvis Fan today (fanatic edition) and there's an advertisement in it for Prince from Another Planet and it says there will be a 2 CD Legacy Edition and a 2 CD + DVD Special Edition.

It's still the same. Finally do Sony what fans want and still complain. crying out loud for this to be released by FTD. there is always what to complain. Nothing is good for some people here. I thnik sony does a good job. And yes soon or later you get your version on FTD. This is what Elvis deserves. The shows are a part of his legacy. And that's why this also belongs to this label. But would it sell. i don't care if it sells. But when i see the afternoon cd sold very well, i think this one doesn't. That's what Sony done wrong. Stiil to late. But i hope i am wrong.

It's about time they gave these shows the remastering and proper mixing they deserve. Look how "an afternoon at the garden" consistently stays on the charts. I remember being in school in the late 70's and going to the library on my breaks to listen to this album. Even though most young kids my age did not listen to Elvis, they all thought this album was awesome. It IS arguably, Elvis best live performance, filled with power, determination and electricity. I only hope they bring up the crowd audio, as it ads so much excitement to a live recording!!! Why, oh why did MGM decide to NOT film this event...the world will never know!

In a lot of ways it doesn't matter if Legacy or regular releases are huge sellers or not. FTDs we know are limited sellers based on their price and availability. The good thing about having CDs in stores and easily available is that they are available for the common fan or the new fan. A lot of us became fans through the Camden series in part due to their cheap price and easy availability. A casual fan or a new fan today really doesn't have as much to choose from from the store other than 30 #1 Hits or the Essential Elvis collection. The new or casual fan probably does't know about FTDs or may be cautious about their price and the length of time for them to ship. Legacy is a good way to have product available at a good quality and price point so fans can build up their collections and their exposure to our man. Sometimes it's songs like It's a Matter of TIme or We Can Make the Morning that reels you in and makes you a super fan, and new or casual fans today can't easily get songs like that.

I agree a MSG photo for the cover makes sense. The trouble is, once you start improving original artwork where do you stop. Most of the 70's covers could be improved on, ROR and AFHVS for instance are awful covers, EIP had a '68 Special photo, EIM again an inappropriate cover. That's why it was an odd decision to use the MSG cover for SRO. It was always going to conflict with a future re-issue of this one.

As it was my first Elvis album back in 1972 I played it dozens of times, never noticing anything wrong with the mix and even loving the scratches that eventually manifested themselves. The recording being speeded up is a strange story - if it was, it would have affected the sound of his voice. Nowhere on the lp does Elvis sound like Donald Duck.

If you go to Madison Square Garden in NYC you willa large version see this cover photo hanging in the gallery of great MSG events in the lobby . The original album didn't feature a cover photo from any of the 4 MSG shows, using the "Standing Room Only" photo instead. So using this iconic shot corrects that. Also the original L.P. always needed to be re-mixed and remastered. If you remember back to 1972, the original master was sped up slightly to fit the whole 55 minute show onto one LP. Hopefully we'll get improved sound on this release . If there is any promotion on this, it should sell well in the NY area. Incidentally , I believe some of the Legacy reissues did chart , and according to Ernst J. sales have been very good for them.

Hey no doubt if this had been a FTD release there would be those saying it shoulda been a mainstream release. Makes sense to have it on Legacy. An Afternoon in the Garden spent 48 weeks in the US album charts and as i understand is close to 500000 sales. As with their Johnny Cash releases i'm sure this Sony Legacy release will be a quality product at an affordable price. Looking forward to it.

Good news for me, I like the original artwork inspiration, I hope that the sound from the evening concert will be remastered whith quality, the black and white picture is nice but a colour picture would be better I think (this is a minor complain) the dvd include is a very nice surprise, thanks

Legacy releases are very nice, but Elvis's best albums were put out this way and didn't do much on the charts. You never see them in Billboard. Because Afternoon At The Garden seems to sell steadily at Walmart & supermarkets, I cant see how this can stir much new interest to the general public as a Legacy release, especially the DVD which seems geared for the hard core collector. Should be an FTD release.

I am glad it's going the Legacy route. I enjoy my FTDs but miss the old days when you could get great releases like the Essential Elvis series as regular releases versus FTDs. Legacy are first class releases, more affordable, and easily available.

I'd rather have unique general public releases, like The Home Recordings, than FTDs, again, because they are more affordabl eand easily available. Take the new From Hawaii to Vegas FTD release...now that's a perfect FTD release but I am still waiting on my copy to arrive. I'd much rather prefer going to the mall or Walmart and being able to pick up a copy.

FTD's are far more impressive than the Legacy releases. The 7" format, ORIGINAL cover artwork AND decent liner notes. Often 2CD sets and not that much more expensive. (Also it wouldn't be using this stupid title).

I'd much rather have this as a two disc 'Classic' release on FTD remixed and remastered by Vic Anesini. I have no interest whatsoever in the content of the DVD. Just my opinion, but I do expect we will eventually get an MSG 'Classic' release. However, they'll make us wait at least a couple of years.

I'm thrilled with the idea of this set, and its proposed content. However, I don't see why the two CD set will be skipped on FTD (minus the DVD). After all, we got the FTD versions of "On Stage", "Elvis Country", and "ELvis Presley" as FTDs as well as the mainstream Legacy series. Maybe for the 45th anniversary of the shows ... (joke).

It's a constuctive complaint. Given that we all have the audio content (I know there'll be an upgrade), for me it's about the format and packaging. Like I said, great idea but should be an FTD. I can't be the only one to feel this way.

How can this be called a "Legacy" release when it has a different title and cover. This was crying out to be a 2 disc FTD, releasing it this way means that's now very unlikely to happen creating a gap in the classic album series. ( could there be a connection with the original cover being adapted for FTD's SRO ).

I'm all for great marketing, but that doesn't seem to matter much when it comes to Elvis. His entire career and legacy has been poorly marketed from the day he signed on with the Colonel until now, yet the money keeps rolling in. Tying release dates to anniversaries and the like is a symbolic nod to the fans, and a nice gesture. Yet, how many times do they run late of the scheduled release date? I'm already thinking September 28 is a goal, not a guarantee. Better to pick a flexible nondescript release date than an important one and run the risk of missing it.

Sure, releasing this in June when it would be an interesting news item for New York newspapers would have been far better marketing wise than staging a presentation during the 35th anniversary of Elvis's passing which is likely to get global press coverage. Maybe not such a bad idea to release it well after the ELVIS week. Most people will spend already enough money on the many releases etc. during that period. Also something to look forward to after August. Looking forward to the DVD, wondering whether it will really contain new material!

You see, they know all about switches, tapes, sounds, reels, buttons but nothing about the simplest rules of 'how to
successfully market elvis" to fans, especially. Too bad ! In June that should have been the best timing ever; the same
goes for an August 2012 release of the outtakes/album on FTD of From EP Blvd.---but nothing. No respect for important dates or places. Look forward to this S U P E R DVD from the Garden...Hope it's not a rip off amateur bad quality.

This is great news, but, it should have been released in June, the month of the 40th anniversary .... or at least in August, during Elvis week .... Why wait until the end of September, after all the hoopla is over? Seems like a lost opportunity for more attention, and bigger sales .... but, what do I know ..... But, it will be a great set! looking forward to it .....

This sounds like a great release. If the DVD contains the complete press conference, which is about 25 minutes, then there won't be much else left for the 40 minutes video footage. I am wondering however if this means that the MSG album won't be released on the FTD label in their Classic album series? TCB

There is film footage from MSG concert. Did they film Elvis during the documentary of Elvis On Tour? There probably is. the producers followed Elvis when he did his 12 city tour. It would have been a bad choice if the Colonel never filmed it. Their is four or five songs filmed by at Tv crew who were their to film the news.
