NYC Mayor Bloomberg Declares "Million Dollar Quartet Day"

December 08, 2010 | Other

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared December 4, 2010 "Million Dollar Quartet Day" in honor of the 54th anniversary of the real life jam session which brought together Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Studio in Memphis who discovered the four young musicians. The impromptu gathering has come to be known as one of the greatest jam sessions of all time, and it's the inspiration behind the musical "MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET" now playing in London, Chicago and on Broadway in New York.

At the declaration ceremony on Saturday, Mayor Bloomberg called the celebration "a testament to the continuing relevance and vitality of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, and the overwhelming impact they had on the music community."

This is wonderful news! I had the great pleasure to see this show with its original cast (appearing now in NYC) & it is super! I have had the privilege of seeing many, many musicals & plays but this one is definitely the best to date. It is unbelievable how energetic & happy you feel when leaving the theater.
