Number 3 Again

March 20, 2005 | Music
Two "oldies" took over the UK chart. Elvis Presley's latest re-issue "She's Not You" has entered the Official UK singles chart at #3 this week. Tony Christie's 1971 hit "Is This The Way To Amarillo" is this week's UK number one. Elvis' previous single "Good Luck Charm" dropped to #25.

Tony Christie's re-released track, which features an appearance by Peter Kay in the promo, takes the top spot from McFly's double A-side "All About You/You've Got a Friend" - both singles are raising money for the UK's Comic Relief charity drive.

The Official Singles Top 10:
1 Tony Christie F/ Peter Kay - Is The The Way To Amarillo
2 McFly - All About You / You've Got A Friend
3 Elvis Presley - She's Not You
4 Gwen Stefani Ft. Eve - Rich Girl
5 Sunset Strippers - Falling Stars

The compilation "Love Elvis" dropped off the UK Album Chart.

Very pleased with that :-) I have high hopes for 'Return To Sender' - If it gets some airplay!

I think it would be a really good idea to have one of the forthcoming singles as a charity single? either wonder of you or ALLC or as i said before an extra single, Cmon Everybody or I Can Help? bet everyone out there has a suggestion?

i would have bet $$ that Gwen would have gotten to #3. A great result for Elvis. Crying in the Chapel is the only one of the 18 singles that i really really really want to get to #1. If i could pick only one ,,, that would be it. Dont expect Return to Sender to get to #1. And depending on what Mc Fly sales were this week, i think it might be a # 3 again.

An extra single release at the end of the current campaign is an excellent idea. I think it should be a track that has never been released as a single before - take your pick from all the 'hidden gems'. It couldn't fail to do well :-)

regarding all the comments about the recent releases, the powers that be ,are still not getting the cds into the shops that count. as i have said before records sold through woolworths do not count in the uk national chart , as they are only counted towards making up their own chart. also many independent dealers do not register sales for the charts. this could well explain the seemingly low numbers at times. to the fans i would say try and buy your elvis singles through shops that register sales for the main charts.

71 consecutive days of being in the top3,and with 10 different songs,That`s The Wonder Of You,Elvis! As regards next week,Charity will still rule,so we prob again looking at a 3or4 position. Depending on what else is out Devil In Disguise will be our real hope, before downloads on April17. An extra song...If I Can Dream should be NO.1 for a whole year!

This continuing crusade for an Elvis charity single is just not right. At this time it would be morally wrong to release an Elvis track with a charity tag, in an attempt to get him to number one. We've proved that we can get him to the top of the charts without hype, without air-play and without TV exposure - that's FAN POWER. If an Elvis charity track was released now the media would certainly batter Elvis, BMG and EPE. The Tony Christie/Peter Kay Comic Relief number one hit is a genuine attempt by well meaning stars to get a million quid ($2 million) for charity, and happily it is working. If you want Elvis back at the top, get those requests into radio stations. There's not too much competition over the next month.

Unfortunately,Elvis gets battered anyway! So why not get battered for having another NO.1 and raising money for charity? This is merely an aside anyway as i can`t see it happening!

I agree with Todd on his views regarding a charity single at this point. I find the continuing shout for it to be If I Can Dream a bit strange too. When it was released as a charity single to benefit the Red Cross Disaster Fund at the time of the 9/11 atrocity it got nowhere. Why not try another song coupling eg. Change of Habit/Walk a Mile in my Shoes/Clean Up Your Own Back Yard. Choose something the general buyer won't have on 30#1's or umpteen other hits packages. Show them Elvis had more than 40 songs in his repertoire and make money for charity too - Just not yet. Elvis wasn't one to jump on the bandwagon.

Charity doesn't always rule though. If you remember the Tsunami single got no air-play and bombed and there would be a danger that Elvis wouldn't get the neccessary air-play to sell 150,000 copies either. Just because the single is for charity is doesn't generally mean that radio will plug it to death. Howard Brown the Halifax man has a delightful version of "You're the first ..." with proceeds to the NSPCC, yet it has had no airplay. (And speaking of Charity, I really miss her, and with Chastity leaving Emmerdale soon I don't know how I will survive.) SONY-BMG UK will have a hard act to follow once the singles campaign finishes, but I can tell you that it is in their mandate to keep interest in Elvis on the boil this side of the pond, and there are some truly exciting projects being evaluated at present.

I`m intrigued... can you tell us about these `exciting` possibilities? I didn`t know Chas was leaving as well, they`ll have to invent another Dingle to drool at, i mean look at for acting skills!

Firstly, BMG realeased an album called Top 10 hits in the States. Maybe BMG could do a similar follow up single box set called Top 10 hits, obviously excluding the No1 hits. Forgetting all the hoo-ha surrounding the current releases, I just love these CD singles with top quality repro of US singles. But if anyone from BMG reads this, please do not cover Elvis' face with those annoying stickers. Secondly, I agree with Todd. To release a single tied to a charity would be a big mistake, as anyone responsible would be accused of climbing on the band wagon. That's not to say something couldn't/shouldn't happen in the future, but only if it is announced that a particular record will be adopted for a future charity. Thirdly, If I Can Dream, released for the 9/11 campaign probably did not get the type of promotion that Tony Christie/Peter Kaye are getting.
