No World Record For James Burton

August 23, 2009 | People

Shreveport, Louisiana is this weekend the hometown of the James Burton Guitar Festival, to honor James' 70th birthday. One of the highlights of the weekend was the attempt to get in to the Guinnes Book of World Records by playing with the largest group of guitar players ever.

At the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, roughly 30 miles west of his hometown of Minden, Burton led a battalion of pickers through the Elvis Presley hits "That's All Right, Mama" and "Hound Dog."

The organisation tried to gather 6000 guitar players to break the record that was currently set on 1802 participants (2007 in Germany). Unfortunately 'only' 800 players were there, wich was not enough to break the record.

That's a shame. Actually another attempt at the record is being made today (23rd) but by a totally different group in Luckenbach, Texas. Best of luck to them.

I wish I could have been there with my own blue guitar but I live alittle bit far away, in Montreal. We'll do it again on your 75th birthday James and this time I will make it a point to show up !

I hope James is able to try again. 800 guitars is quite impressive. If he tries again, I would love to be there. My boy, my boy, I will meet you there!

The record was broken in Luckenbach, Texas, yesterday by a different group to the one James organised. I believe they got 1869 guitar players. Hopefully James will beat this next year.
