MSG 100 Best

November 02, 2009 | Music

MSG has a poll on its site to decide which of the acts that performed there is the best. Of course Elvis is listed, and we can all vote for him. He needs the votes desperately, since the Stones, the Who and Bruce Springsteen are way ahead of him.

I've voted, but I feel that polls where you can vote more than once aren't reliable. I've voted several times though as I think fans of other artists will do the same.

before I vote blindly for Elvis I need to know the quality of other performances as well. Just voting because it is Elvis doesnn't make sense..

Jerome - I will be honest with you. I saw Elvis there in 1972 several times. Nothing was ever so exciting for me at the time. I had waited all my life for it and stood for hours waiting for tickets. But the show? 1 minute versions of Hound Dog, All Shook up, and other classics? The Impossible Dream? It was Vegasy, rushed and appeared Elvis wanted to get the heck out of there as soon as possible. That was also the general feeling around me. As for Bruce - 2 and 1/2 half hours of pure high energy rock and roll. Not a better singer by any means, but a better show, yes I think so. Probably the best live show I have ever seen and Ive seen all the big names except for The Beatles.

Steve thanks for your great answer, these are stories I'd love to hear. I don't mind if they are positive or negative for a reason but I care because they are from people who have actually been there. Because of my age I never had that chance. But I always felt that rush in the (MSG) performances as well and always wondered why. Besides that, I always wondered how the audiences felt about hearing Hound Dog and Teddybear throwaway versions (except from the screaming women at the front of the stage)..

You are quite welcome Jerome. I will always be honest on this site whether its positive or negative. I have taken heat for it but I wont change. I saw several MSG shows, my favorite being the last show on Sunday afternoon, June 12th. Maybe because it was the last one or maybe because I had better seats (LOL) I dont know, but Elvis seemed more relaxed. You are right about Hound Dog and other classics. The ladies screamed but the rest of us were rather let down and many wondered why full versions of non-Elvis songs and throw away your classics. My favorite Elvis show was in 1975 at Nassau Colesium. He was just 'on' and sitting at the piano and singing You'll Never Walk Alone was prob the greatest performance I have sever seen. Why doesnt FTD put this show out? But Elvis at MSG was rushed and certainly not the best show that arena has ever seen. Maybe as an event, a happening, the hype, yes, but performance, no.

Thanks for sharing Steve. It´s always nice to listen to your stories, as I didn´t get the chance to see Elvis live. These shows must be pretty memorable. However, I agree with you, the shows in NYC were rushed. I don´t know if I should use the word dissappointing. He sure could have done it better. I´m not going to vote for Elvis, I think it´s a rather stupid poll. I know Elvis´ shows there, but know nothing about other great performers that did perform there. I also have to question, is it really that important that Elvis is number one in this poll. Absolutely not! One thing that also has entered my mind when I think about this event, is why Elvis never returned to do more shows in MSG. It was a huge success back in 1972, and it could be just the challenge he needed in his later years.

Elvis was top of his game in 72 when it comes to being a concert performer and the MSG shows are amongst my favourites, however saying that i felt Elvis could have done more justice when it came to his 50's classics they sounded nothing like the originals recorded only 16 years earlier and I can fully understand fans dissapointments, also the shows were short compered to other gigs now and then, if elvis had have lived he may have gone back to his roots with the original fifties arrangements in an unplugged segment who knows. I never got to see Elvis but i have met people who have and they said it was more of an happening than a regular concert and how lucky they were for being entertained by one of the greatest entertainers of the 21st century and if I had the opportunity i would have rather seen elvis on stage for one hour than any other artist for longer for that he gets my vote.

I saw the King in the Garden in 1972. Sat. evening & Sun. afternoon. I anticipated seeing Elvis as far back as 1956. The concerts were a bit of a letdown. Maybe my expectations were too high. He did a workmenlike performance. Many songs were rushed. It seemed like he wasn't all that into it. I also saw hin in Nassau a few years later(he was better). Having said all this I wouldn't have missed it for all the world. Maybe my sharing it with my ex wife had something to do with that feeling & the memories. I'm sure other artists have given better concerts throughout the years. However I would not trade seeing anybody over seeing the King.

For me it is like if you find a member of your family having an argument with a stranger in the street. You dont care about who is right and who is wrong, you stick up for them ferociously and get the details later. You know where your loyalties lie. Or if you are at war - you don't care if that other country has it's good points or good men, you support your troops and that is it period. I was never fortunate enough to see Elvis live and defer to your judgement, but the comparisons with other performers are irrelevant to me, sure they may have given a better show, but in the end you have to know where your loyalties are. I have voted for Elvis.

people only vote once,if you vote more than once he goes down :(

I can see where Burninglove92 is coming from, but what is actually happening is this:– There are 25 artists in the list, whose total votes come to 100%. As soon as any other artist is voted for, everyone else goes down. Fleetwood Mac & The Stones are experiencing multiple votes (which of course we would not do!) & thus Elvis' percentage is going down. At the moment one vote adds aprox 0.01 onto an artist's total. So keep voting!!

elvis was dominating the list! what's happened!! hes losing to led zeppelin

Pointless - if you never actually went to any of these concerts... all people are doing is voting for their fav act. What a waste of time.
dgirl wrote on November 04, 2009
Good point John. That is exactly what people are doing if you read the comments on the website. One would have had to attend all these shows to give a valid non-partisan vote. So vote for your favorite artist and hope for the best in another pointless poll.
theoldscudder wrote on November 04, 2009
I agree with dgirl (nice seeing you the other day) & John4126 & I also will not be voting.
circleG wrote on November 05, 2009
hahaha at last we've seen the light! of course this is pointless and for the reasons you've all stated. The powers that be at MSG clearly didn't give this much thought. Why don't they celebrate the venue with a release/documentary containing footage of the various acts, professional or otherwise, now that i would vote for!
Brian Quinn wrote on November 05, 2009
Personally, I do not think that the votes for any artist go down if you vote more than once. However, what is apparent is that there are a team of Led Zeppelin fans voting throughout the day. Therefore, in my opinion, it is a waste of time voting in this poll. Such polls are worthless and do not represent the true opinions of the general public. The vast majority of the comments accompanying this poll, however, favour Elvis.
