More 2008 FTD Releases?

The Essential Elvis magazine reports in his latest May/June 2008 issue the following albums will be released in 2008/ 2009: "Louisiana Hayride Farewell Concert 1956"' "The Sun Era 1954-1955" (Photo book with CD), "Live In Hawaii 1961", "Good Times", "Promised Land" and "How Great Thou Art".

We asked Ernst about it and his comment was "not even close", but that was for 2008 only, before we corrected the part above.

Ha ha, that's a good one Steve V ! No, no having fun on stage. But until now I bought every FTD release. But when you look at Loving You 2 CD release, I wasn't waiting for CD2 with only the song Loving You on it. But I see disc 2 as a bonus and then I think it's ok. It's the same price as a 1 CD release. It's great that FTD will release all the orginal albums again as a 2 CD set, good sound and aternate takes. I am wondering what they will do with the Elvis in Concert album ? Omaha and Rapid City both complete ? Or even a DVD include ? But if people buy everything Steve V, I don't think that's a problem. It's up to them.

Anxiously awaiting the 56 concert in a beautiful package and the Sun CD/Book set. I have always wondered about the Memphis 61 shows. Hopefully, someone has them and they will see the light of day. The 56 show and 61 shows should be mainstream in deluxe packaging. Great news!

well, what about 1969 rehearsals prior to presleys first vegas season? did anybody ever mention rehearsal tapes? this would be a significative addition to any collection! Are there any tapes in some vault we haven't heard about?
JerryNodak (profilecontact) wrote on May 21, 2008report abuse
FTD can put out whatever releases they wish. I'm not against anything as such. Just because I'm not interested in a certain release doesn't mean someone else isn't. But, like Steve V, I don't buy everything. Therefore I'm not interested in a Hayride release because I'd play it once and then it would gather dust. Some goes for the Hawaii Benefit concert. I've already got it on the Elvis Aron Presley muti-record/disc sets released years ago. The audio quality is listenable at best. Unless they've found a much better source tape I'm not interested. Even then it's not something I would listen to more than a couple of times.

Well I do care what FTD puts out. I dont buy just because FTD puts out a release. It has to be something I want to listen to more than once. Herman would you buy an FTD release that is an expanded version of Having Fun On Stage? Again seems some ELvis fans buy all that is thrown at them. This was a problem during his career and continues today.

The last thing i want is anything from lousinna hayride,i have enough of that to last me,who actually listens to that more than once or twice,no offence i know some love the 50's Elvis, how about a on tour set from Ftd.a complete rehearsals set from 1970?
Herman (profilecontact) wrote on May 20, 2008report abuse
I don't care what the new FTD titels should be. As long as they keep coming !!
Pedro Nuno (profilecontact) wrote on May 19, 2008report abuse
And now Mr. Ernest, do you have the Memphis 1961 Concerts? Please say Yes!
Pedro Nuno (profilecontact) wrote on May 19, 2008report abuse
This is too good to be true. The Louisiana and Hawaii 1961 concerts are among Elvis Best Concerts ever. It's too bad that they are not released for the general public, via SONY/BMG. Thank you soo much Mr. Ernest!
Steve V (profilecontact) wrote on May 19, 2008report abuse
Harvey - exactly. Rock N Roll was considered a passing fad in the early days. Think of all the great Alan Freed package shows that could have been recorded but werent. In 1961, though, maybe both the Memphis & Hawaii concerts should have been recorded since Parker knew Elvis would not be making any more appearance due to the movies. Something else we have to thank Parker for I guess.
Harvey Alexander (profilecontact) wrote on May 19, 2008report abuse
Things like the Newport Jazz Festivals were recorded professionally. Elvis' Hawaii concert in 1961 wasn't. As far as I'm aware the recording we have of it came from a radio station, who probably recorded it without Parker's permission. Maybe that's why it sneaked out on a bootleg first. RCA never recorded any of Elvis' early concerts - the Vegas '56 show was recorded by somebody else, the Little Rock '56 show was recorded by a DJ etc. Live recordings were pretty rare in the 50s and 60s unless you were a 'mainstream' pop artist like Harry Belafonte. The major labels looked at rock n roll as being trash and something that wouldn't last, so why should they spend money on recording live shows?

ooops, I sent my first post as a report abuse...I apologize. My question is, will there ever appear a hawaii 61 concert in better quality than released? I always wondered, why other labels newport jazz festivals managed to relase those concerts in superb sound qualitiy while this historical event obviously wasn't considered as such. anyone out there knowing the reason for this unawarness at rca back then?
JerryNodak (profilecontact) wrote on May 18, 2008report abuse
Of course there will be more FTD releases. Besides the batch already announced for July it's likely we'll see more in either October or November. Perhaps one or more of the titles on the list will be in that group. That will be it for 2008. I don't doubt we'll see all the titles on the list eventually. Perhaps even by the end of 2009. But theses things are always subject to change. All will be made clear to us in Ernst's own good time.
Jerome (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
james69, releasing all these albums in one year, be it 2008 or 2009, would only shorten the lifetime of FTD. therefore this 'news' to me is false. eventually we'll see these classic albums (i hope all of them: good times, promised land, how great thou art, he touched me and christmas albums) and I can't wait. but do you think that the bigger part of these releases will see the daylight that soon? No way, that would be marketingwise stupid and maybe productionwise impossible for FTD..

Oops indeed Chop983, This information on those releases was allready on the Japanese Elvis World site months ago. This is not new information of what is in the pipeline. Sorry to say for all who make a lot of fush about it........"

Oops just read Brians post about this being 2008/09 release's, that's more like it. Still no Country though.
Chop983 (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
I can't see them getting this many release's out this year either, That's 7 CD's (these 5 plus For the Asking/Love Letters) and a Book/CD which is due to be a triple cd set. It's May already that's a CD a month and FTD don't have that kind of release schedule.
Steve V (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
I guess FTD has become the new BMG mainstream label for any non compilation Elvis releases. Remember when it was a special label designed for rare material only for the die hards? Well it is now just issuing mostly mainstream material at big prices. Im not complaining as there is a markert for this , its just sad how the industry has changed. No more can u go to a local store (if you can find one) and lovingly browse the racks. These releases (with the exception of maybe the 1961 concert) at one time could have been on the mainstream label.

What about the fact if Sony/BMG change their strategy for releasing Follow that Dream product and stop….. Nothing is impossible, especially with the low sales of cd’s now days. We are then happy that Follow that Dream brought out a lot of material. The cd’s are not sold out right away…….., so if you think it is too much you buy it later……. I think Follow that dream should for that reason bring out more…….. I think they are doing well with the recent releases and hope that will continue…..,to put out releases like the “That’s the way it is” album.
Brian Quinn (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
Just to clarify matters concerning the said releases. When I submitted my article for publication in 'Essential Elvis' Magazine the scheduled release 'due' dates should have been printed as 2008/9 and not just 2008. This was a typing error on my behalf and I apologise if this has given cause to some confusion. Once again, sincere apologies.

I think Jerome's bullsh*t comment referred to the news item itself, not the quality of the supposed releases. On that front, I have to agree with him. It just seems too good to be true (as well as questionable businesswise) for FTD to suddenly pump out all those releases at once. Yes, the Sun set has been in the pipeline for a while and Good Times was certainly expected (followed by Promised Land next year?).

This alleged release list would leave no room for any more soundboards for 2008. Also, I'm not particularly excited about Hawaii '61 unless they used a source that completely blows away the one on the silver box set.
James69 (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
Jerome, why is this bulls**t??? I don't understand your reasoning. Good Times, Promised Land, How Great Thou Art, bring it on FTD! Not so sure about Hawaii 61, unless they have found a much better source.

Would be nice if the album Elvis-Country was on the list also. Then we have almost the whole Nashville 1970 session, with the "That's the way it is" & "Love Letters" album. Nice project could the "Country" album be...... Put the mixed "I was born about ten thousand years ago" album on it, but put also the songs out without the "I was born about ten thousand years ago" mix. I know that you can hear those songs on the essential 70's masters box disc 3, but with the song "Tomorrow will never comes" there is also not a clean start and some new remastered songs on disc 3 are mixed in a way that they do not sound like the original release like the song "Funny how time slips away" Listen to the piano and guitar part. They are separate in the original but playing together on the Essential 70's masters. (I must say that i like most mixes on the "essential 70's masters, verry clear/ strong voice of Elvis)Would also be nice if those masters with fade outs run a little longer what they did with other releases. This Country album could be a 3 disc release if it is done well. looking forward on the "Love Letters" album. I am sorry to say to some people, but finally there you can hear the songs "If I were You" & "This is our dance" in remastered versions. We had those two not yet and yes…….,i like those songs also.............. I think that if those songs would be on the original "That's the way it is" album, almost nobody complained......, and "That's the way it is" is a excellent album, with or without those two songs......

promised land. Wow. Another great release (and ofcourse the sun) .I have the promised lp as a Quaddisc . On this version is the sound awesome. I hope they release this albums also as a QD
I have made a cdr with the 4 channel stereo and on the homecinemasystem it sounds amazing
But the live in hawaii ,i have my doubts
Jerome (profilecontact) wrote on May 17, 2008report abuse
you would be very stupid marketingwise to release good times, promised land and how great thou art all in one year, this is bullsh*t..
