Memorial Destroyed

June 05, 2005 | Other
The Memorial of Elvis owned by the Memories of Elvis Fan Club in Auckland, New Zealand is destroyed by vandals.

Some people walking their dog in the park, saw it lying on the concrete circle surrounding the base, and told the council. who came and took away the broken part and have locked it away for safekeeping over the long weekend.

It must have taken a huge amount of effort to break off the figure, as the whole thing is made of granite set in concrete, and reinforced with steel rods. Unfortunately it is not insured, because being in a public place it is too high a risk, but the Memorial has been standing in Cranwell Park since it was unveiled in January 2000, and nothing too bad has ever happened to it.

There are some real idiots in this world. People who are so filled with hate that they destroy everything around them. Hopefully it can be repaired.

I am disgusted at such a display of ignorance, disrespect not only to Elvis's memory but also to the people who put this statue together. Its a shame in this day an age we have to put up with vandals like these. But even with the top gone off its a beautiful statue, I hope it can be fixed. T C B
