Lilo And Stitch A DVD Hit

December 06, 2002 | Video
Disney's animated SF-adventure Lilo and Stitch is proving as popular on DVD and video as it was in theaters, selling more than three million copies on Tuesday, its first day of release, according to Variety. While not a record, the $45 million tally ranks as one of the largest first-day DVD and video hauls of 2002 and nearly triples the opening weekend gross of the studio's latest animated feature, Treasure Planet.

"We've not seen a fourth quarter this crowded with so many big box-office, competitive titles vying for a similar audience in the history of this industry," Robert Chapek, president of Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment division, told the trade paper. "And with Lilo & Stitch having topped first-day sales of most of these titles, it is poised to become not only a very strong performer this holiday season, but one of the best-selling titles of 2002."
