Keeping Them Warm

May 01, 2013 | Music

Venus just released a book/cd combination, Keeping Them Warm. This is what they have to say about it:

After taking a break, VENUS is now back, to present you more high quality products. We kick off with the first volume of a new series of CD/Book combos on our sub-label: VAR – Venus Ambient Recordings.

Presented as a hardcover book measuring 18x18cm, our first combo – Keeping Them Warm – contains 135 pages and is filled to the brim with pictures from the August/September 1972 Vegas season plus there’s a bonus section about the April 1972 tour, there will be many pictures you’ve never seen before.

The concert itself is the unreleased August 22, 1972 Midnight Show, presented in our usual Outer Space sound quality. Forget what’s been released by now from -so called- booth tapes. Even a Sound Board -where most of the action is missing- will have a hard time to compete. Now you can capture the atmosphere of an Elvis show as if you are present.

Wow i want this one! August 22, 1972 MS show? We didn't have this previously, do we?
Natha wrote on May 01, 2013
Just ordered this one. It's the music that counts for me, so I saved money on books to buy this one. Looking forward to it.

Venus, Quality label! Splendid releases. Thumbs up.

I put my order in for this one too. Venus is kind of a quirky label, you know, saying things like "sound from outer space" and stuff like that....hilarious! I am glad that they do not take themselves seriously, because if they did, that usually means you better hide your wallet. Their previous books are excellent, both in quality and content, and their CD's are top notch. Just one case in point, "Bringing It all Back Home" has the BEST sounding release of the June 10, 1975 concert I have ever heard. Nice thing about this purchase is that we get a previously unreleased concert from 1972 and a book for about $40.00. That's quite a bargain!

To answer black diamond's question, this show was released as a CDR titled "Port Fire". I have never heard the CDR, so I cannot tell you what it was like. Maybe ciscoking will chime in later with the details.

Hmmm.... not a booth tape, not a soundboard, not a multi-track - it's gotta be an AR that would give us the "atmosphere of an Elvis show as if you are present," right ? I'm not sur I'm gonna spend the money for a book and a AR. Then again, Venus has always had super sound quality on its releases. What to do, what to do....
whetherman wrote on May 02, 2013
Yes Orion I was in the exact same quandary, I concluded it must be an audience recording which I no longer bother with....but......it is the Venus label, which has always meant top quality to me. As you say...what to do, what to do. I've decided to go with it purely because it's Venus. Hope I'm not disappointed.

Can someone send me a personal email and just let me know where you are ordering this from pleeeaasse?
Ciscoking wrote on May 02, 2013
The show is standard offering nothing new. Elvis is committed and delivers a solid performance. Tom Jones was in the audience. The sound of the cd-r is soso. We already have plenty of releases from this Vegas season ..AR`s and SB`s..a total of 21 imports out of 64 shows that Elvis gave..16 shows we have on cd-r...so there`s no essential need for this concert... debut on silver disc..so a must-have for die-hard collectors only..I think..on the other side..when the sound is really that good and the book is okay..why not..? But I`d like to hear a sound sample first..to make a final decision..
Lefty wrote on May 03, 2013
I agree with cisco on wanting to hear a sound sample. Venus is not saying what the sound source is exactly. Maybe that is a marketing technique? Anyway, there's nothing really new where Elvis is concerned. We've heard all that there is in one form or another. As far as 1972 concerts go, they are my stand out favorite, even more so than the 1969 -1970 concerts. At least this concert is not a re-release (I do not count CDR's as "releases" in that they are very hard to obtain...except for cisco!)
wildfishie wrote on May 03, 2013
Cisco is right. It's very hard to form an opinion on this release without the chance to hear a sample. The description is rather confusing, almost misleading, I'd say. When they come up with things like "Now you can capture the atmosphere of an Elvis show as if you are present" at the same time saying that soundboards miss the action, it can only make me conclude that the audio is nothing more than an improved audience recording. The annoying screaming and chatting will probably be there, as usual. I don't know if more people paid attention but I notice the big "MONO" written on the CD, so big chances are that it's indeed an audience recording. We all know Venus is a quality label but I think the way they're advertising this release is questionable. Unless more positive information about it is given, I think I'll pass this one.

Looks like a standard 1972 audience CD. Is there anything worthwhile in the book or just pictures?
benny scott wrote on May 03, 2013
Venus is talking about their 'sub-label VAR' ! could that mean something ? Just wondering . Always El.
Ciscoking wrote on May 03, 2013
I reconsidered....I am a CD collector and no book collector...and is the show so important to add a book..? I am looking forward to more interesting studio stuff from Venus..AR`s is the job of Straight Arrow or Rainbow Records..
Orion wrote on May 03, 2013
VAR – Venus Ambient Recordings - aka Venus Audience Recordings. Move I'm Cisco - I'm climbing aboard the same boat. Gonna pass on this one. I think the well is dry for Venus as well as most of the other import labels - a reason why we've had all the re-issues on GravelRoad etc. I guess I'm gonna have to finally start putting my money away for my retirement instead.
Orion wrote on May 03, 2013
I shouldn't type before the coffee takes effect - that should have said "Move Over - I'm with Cisco". Sleep Deprivation is baaad thing.
Lefty wrote on May 03, 2013
I confirmed with my dealer, a well-respected collector in the Elvis community, that this is an Audience Recording. I cancelled my order. I don't listen to AR's. They just end up collecting dust and taking up space on my shelf.
Ciscoking wrote on May 03, 2013
It is a soundbooth recording..recorded with 2 mics with a cassette recorder from the audience..if you know the Straight Arrrow discs you know what I mean..
Lefty wrote on May 04, 2013
Is a soundbooth recording all the much different than what we call "audience recordings"? Both processes involve a mic (or two) connected to a tape recorder and placed in the audience.
Bestoftherest8301 wrote on May 04, 2013
Suggest Venus take another and much longer break if this is all they can come up with.
Ciscoking wrote on May 04, 2013
Perhaps they need the money to finance future releases..;-)
In-A-Flash wrote on May 05, 2013
Sounds like Venus keeping us warm till they have found a real good new show or outtakes.
Johnny2523 wrote on May 05, 2013
this aint a soundbooth recording.. It's a mono recording and i thought soundbooths where stereo?
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on May 05, 2013
There is just as much need for a book with this as there was with ftd's fashion for a king,or rockin across texas. So ftd isnt any better are they?
Natha wrote on May 05, 2013
I go for the cd. The book is just an extra. Maybe I rushed in ordering this one. I gather from the intel here that the original tape is of low quality. Yet, it is a concert that I don't have yet. Hope this tape will have that Venus special.
blackdiamond wrote on May 06, 2013
I'm listening to the show right now. It is a typical audience recording. You can hear it all: the chatter, the shouting "Elvis!" when the C.C. Rider begins and oh yes: you'll also hear that the annoying loud clapping of the audience! I have to admit that this is a good sounding audience recording, but I'll skip this one. You can search on the net for some samples. Some people uploaded the cd on the net. Try to search for it before you spend your well earned money!

10.3 % of people who voted on the matter on ciscokings' corner (on the great site Jordan's Elvis world) prefer audience recordings instead of soundboards, I think it is nice that there is something special for them too. I prefer soundboards myself but must admit that I have gotten some great audience recordings lately (you'll never walk alone, High spirit in Vegas, Help me make it in Pittsburg and The 76 new years show from FTD), they are all among my favorite CDs now. I also like the combo with a book, so that you have pictures and text together with the concert. The other Venus combos I have (Black angles in Vegas and Bringing it all back home) were really worth their price, if this is anything like it, apart from being "audience" instead of soundboards, then I would consider it a sure buy.
Natha wrote on May 06, 2013
BlackDiamond, just recently I discovered that one can also download a cd (yes, I know, I'm backward in this field). I downloaded some old ones I never were able to purchase. I'm not sure whether or not I will turn to that from now on, as it is also quite something to have the cd instead of some computer files. Nevertheless, I might.
You Dont Know Me wrote on May 07, 2013
still undecided about this. Too similar to shows i have already in good quality from day b4 and after. Also i didn't want a book, just the CD and so price puts me off purchasing.
murph1031 wrote on May 07, 2013
Looks like a decent cd. BUT main reason IM here to warn people DO NOT Purchase anything from mature_elvis_fan75 He's a cheat.
Lefty wrote on May 07, 2013
murph, he tried to sell to me also. I wasn't comfortable with the deal because he does not take Paypal, so I declined. You have confirmed my suspicions. Sorry you got burned.
alanfalk wrote on May 08, 2013
Are you guys telling us that the reason that Mature_Elvis_fan75 has been bashing all FTD releases for a long time is because he has been selling bootlegs that competes with FTD ? IF that is the case, then it is really low !!
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on May 08, 2013
I bash ftd because they too often get it wrong and are not for fans as some people like to think. And guess what nope it wasnt bootlegs boy that would really make me a dirty bad boy huh. It was a ftd,he got his first order and when he didnt get the second i asked him several times what did he want,in nother words a refund or some cd's,he never answered me,this is a personal attack but anywho! Left you didnt buy from me,but yes be glad you didnt,im a mean nasty man. Mike hermenet who is a moderator for another site ripped me off for several hundrend dollars!
In-A-Flash wrote on May 09, 2013
Why not just refund the money to murph1031 and everyone is happy again?
murph1031 wrote on May 18, 2013
mature_elvis_fan75, did indeed send me my first order. He asked me after words to write some positive reviews for him. I did not know at the time that he had been ripping people off for years. He never sent me second order, claimed it was lost in the mail. I had told him we would split the lost, and he would send me one CD, my order was for the deleted Jailhouse rock vinyl, and the ROR CD. He told me he had another copy of the ROR cd and would send that, nothing. After I tracked him down here he e-mailed he and told me he would send me my money back, that's been two weeks and nothing, I'm guessing that got lost in the mail also, we live in the same state by the way. If you need to check him out go the To much monkey business and CD collectors fan sites, both sites have sticky,s warning about him.
