Jake Hess Improving After Hear Attack

December 31, 2003 | People
With nurses singing "Happy Birthday" to him on Christmas Eve, Jake Hess celebrated his 76th birthday in the intensive care unit of a hospital near Columbus, GA. Jake's condition is slowly improving from a heart attack he suffered on December 14. He was one of Elvis favorite gospel singers, leader of the Statesmen Quartet and performed "Known Only To Him" on Elvis' funeral.

A family spokesman said doctors indicate that a case of pneumonia he developed after the heart attack has cleared up. Nurses presented Jake a Santa Claus and a snowman on his birthday, then offered an apology. "We couldn't find a male angel," the nurse said. "That's what we wanted."

Family members say they continue to be overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and concern shown by Jake's friends and fans and hope everyone will keep Jake on their prayer list in this difficult time.
