If Only Elvis Had Co-written This Song

April 06, 2005 | Other
The confusion surrounding the song "If I'd Only Bought Her Roses" which was supposetly co-written by Elvis Presley can be cleared. The EIN website contacted EPE to verify the claims made by Elvis-a-Rama. This is EPE's reply: "The first we'd ever heard of this was when the song was listed on eBay. We have not found anything to indicate there's any truth to what is being said about it. No, we do not have ownership in it."

I think that most fans don't believe this tale anyway. Mind you, it's no good asking EPE about what Elvis may or may not have recorded. If there was a plate which Elvis was rumoured to have designed, they'd have every lawyer in the land finding out about it, but something actually pertaining to Elvis' craft? you might as well ask the cat. BMG seem awfuly quiet on the subject; what do they have to say about it?

A song which was published in 1973 should be registered under all songwriters' names through BMI or ASCAP in the USA. Elvis Presley, if someone wants to do the research, should be listed as a co-writer of this song. And this information is easily available to music scholars like Ernest Jorgensen or Joe Tunzie. If Elvis had indeed co-written a song back in 1973, why has this information not available in the numerous and detailed discosgraphies which have been written since, even if he didn't record it? Also, as strong as the Colonel, and Elvis, pushed songwriters to surrender to Hill and Range or Elvis (Gladys) Music some of the publishing rights, do you think that if Elvis really wrote a song; the Colonel would allow some other song company to publish it instead? That defies logic, for any song co-written by Elvis would have been listed then as the property of the Colonel and Elvis' song publishing companies. So now it is "revealed", and Chris Davidson is trying to capitalize on it. A word to the wise, don't buy anything related to this song until you see some documentation that it was indeed reigstered properly in Elvis' name in 1973.

I'm glad to read that confirmation although I knew from start Elvis couldn't have been a co-writer for that song. It's just not the way he used to work...
