LONDON (Reuters) - Bart Simpson on Tuesday beat Marilyn Monroe and Nelson Mandela in a poll to pick the icon of the 20th century. ``Animated characters never age, won't let you down and can be cooler, funnier and more laid-back than real icons,'' said Tim Dowling, brand manager of Boddington's brewery, which polled 18 to 35-year-olds.

The poll was topped by Elvis Presley. Princess Diana was voted number two icon, followed by Martin Luther King and Bart Simpson. "Cyberbabe'' Lara Croft, so beloved by male computer game players, finished at number eight, ahead of Mother Teresa. The complete top 10 is:
