Humes High Memories

May 05, 2007 | Other
Hidden in downtown Memphis, in the basement of the Superior Restaurant and Bar on Beale Street, former pupils of Humes High School house their collection of memorabilia and photos. The school, which Elvis attended, closed as a high school in 1967 and is now a middle school.

The Humes alumni meet monthly and discuss high school days gone by, including one very famous school pupil, Elvis Presley. The walls are painted in Humes school colours and the their collection, which is closely protected, and not open for public tours, contains a corner of Elvis memorabilia, including a few photographs that they claim would be unseen by Elvis fans.

'The Humes alumni meet monthly' are that like group conversations for Hume High addicts?

Even when I was growing up in Memphis 100 years ago, there was a fierce rivalry between North Memphis (Humes High) and SOUTH Memphis (South Side High). The Tigers vs. the Scrappers..Today, at the Humes gatherings (and we have attended two of them to show them our EARLY ELVIS: THE HUMES YEARS book, they had a maximum of 9 folks there. At our Scrapper gatherings (sorry, we don't have a Scrapper room, we just meet at the Piccadilly) ... we have a minimum of 225 old Scrappers each meeting and, believe me, our accomplishments while back in South Side, have been blown 1000 times out of proportion. WHY ... did y'all know I was All-American in 3 sports? (I didn't either until I started attending these dinners!)
