Hidden Material Upcoming DVD Releases

August 02, 2006 | Video
The upcoming single disc reissues of the "1968 Comeback Special" and "Aloha From Hawaii Special" contain some so called "Easter eggs". An "Easter egg" is hidden content on a DVD. It's not listed on or in any of the DVD packaging or shown obviously on the onscreen DVD menu. You have to find it. It's a popular way of delivering to "in the know" fans special content that the general public might not appreciate fully. On the images you can see how to find the "Easter egg".

On the "Comeback" disc you get, according to the original EPE press release, three takes from the "Guitar Man" production number featuring the dancers' karate segment and Elvis's final portion of the song "It Hurts Me" were inadvertently left off of Disc 3 of the 2004 release Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD. The one tape containing these three takes had not made it into the inventory of raw tapes when the digital transfers used for the deluxe DVD set were made and were found later. We provide these takes here. Enjoy.

On the the "Aloha From Hawaii" disc you get various footage according to the original EPE press release: "Elvis appeared in two press conferences leading up to his Aloha from Hawaii concert TV special. To date, copies of the press conferences in their entirety have eluded us. Here, we provide the portions we have been able to locate so far.

September 4, 1972 - Las Vegas Hilton
November 20, 1972 - Hawaiian Village Hotel

An "arrival in Hawaii" sequence was shot for the Aloha from Hawaii TV special. The complete, pristine raw footage shot by the program's production team is included in the 2-disc set Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD. Here we present some TV news footage".

And now we have to buy this DVD for just a few minutes interview ? Why are the interviews not included on Deluxe Edition DVD ? Policy of the EPE ? LOL...

This is sooooo pathetic. They give us the deluxe editions and then say oh we forgot this piece here, so we will re-release this so you can pay another $30 and we make more money. It makes me sick.

From the official Elvis site: The single-disc releases are geared toward reaching the casual and potential new Elvis fans who could be interested in this material but are not ready to commit to the pricier box sets. The single-disc editions also make it possible to get the Elvis '68 and Aloha material into retail outlets that don't carry DVDs above a certain price point. These single-discs will reach a broader market than the box sets have and should make a nice contribution to the growth of Elvis fandom worldwide.

Can't understand why anyone would complain. These are very inexpensive. On the 68 deluxe set we have the short version of the TV special (plus Let Youself Go). On this set they have the long version of the special, which rearranged some of the live takes. I prefer the expanded version of the 68 special and the reedit looks like a good improvement over the old long version. My copies are still on the way but I am really looking forward to them. I agree with Teacher. This is good for Elvis. Lots of people will buy these, but they would never buy the deluxe sets.

I am delighted about these releases. I just wish they were released about 4 weeks apart to allow maximum charting opportunity. But certainly these will help to promote Elvis, in particular the 68 special. One glimpse of that performance and any music fan would be hooked.

is there more? I think I wait for another release next year! no wait, the earlier editions are complete enough for me.. brings back memories from the 80's, other cover for the lp, same songs, and people will buy it.

I have the SE of both Comeback and Aloha. I've decided I'm not going to buy either of these single disc editions even though I'll be without It Hurts Me. If I just HAVE to see it I'll pull out my old video. None of the new content on Aloha holds anny interest for me. I'm tired of EPE playing games with these releases. You know that at some later point in time they'll release the "Super Deluxe Definitive Editions".

JerryNodak - we are in agreement. I can always pull out It Hurts Me from my video tape. As for why some folks are complaining, it's not that we are upset by these DVD releases. There should be inexpensive versions for folks who only want the show and not the deluxe boxes. But they should be only the show and that's it. EPE is def playing games with us by putting things on these DVD's that were not on the deluxe versions. I'm sure they had it all along despite what they say. It's called marketing and even tho they say they are targeting the vast audience believe me they know they are also targeting the die hard collector who now wants this additional footage however small. I am not playing their games either and will pass on these.

I saw these DVD's in Wal-Mart for $9.72. Almost twice the price if you buy them from Amazon.

...excuse me for being a thicky, but they are more than twice the price and no shipping!

Does anyone know when we will have region 2 versions of these? Is region 1 (US) really regionon free as several Elvis DVDs appear to be?

I seen both of these single disc versions at my local Wal-mart the other day, and I agree wholeheartedly, that the extras should have been put on the deluxe editions that were already released. I mean, for the price the deluxe editions are..and being deluxe, they should have been on there. I won't be buying these.
