FTD To Release 1976 Birmingham And Dallas Shows

March 19, 2010 | Music

This summer the FTD label will release both shows from the last week of December as a double package. Both concerts have seen release on import labels. Only last week Audionics re-released the Dallas concert as At Full Force...

FTD who own both original masters to the shows needs some help from you people. Very few known photos do excist of the December 28 concert. If you have any, and possible newspaper reviews of both shows, please contact us and we will pass it on to Ernst Jorgensen at FTD. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Must be early april fool's day joke :))
Tony C wrote on March 19, 2010
Great, it gives everybody the chance to hear these above average (for that era) shows. I'm not sure why we would think this were an April Fools Day joke.
Steve V wrote on March 19, 2010
FTD is in love with 1976 for some reason.
Jim Hoff wrote on March 19, 2010
Nice to involve the fans in the FTD projects ........
Lex wrote on March 19, 2010
Hopefully someone among us can deliver :-). And mr. Sweden, it's no April Fool's Day joke, it has been checked with Ernst.
Pedro Nuno wrote on March 19, 2010
After July 1975, those concerts (and the 5 days tour) are the only concerts where Elvis is not a sad shadow and parody of himself. In fact they are great and Elvis is FANTASTIC. More, those concerts should be released by SONY/BMG, not FTD. And what about Atlanta and Wichita? No sources available.
elvis sweden wrote on March 19, 2010
Thank you LEX.Then I don't need the 5 boots that has been out.Fribee time for them :))
GoodRocknTonite wrote on March 19, 2010
The only reason FTD is love with 1976 is because it's all they have. So many shows were recorded because they were changing musicians and back-up singers left and right that year.
Ronald wrote on March 19, 2010
Well if this isn't an april fools joke than i can Ernst that this will be the next two FTD's i don't need. I stick to the first released mono issues. Maybe they sound a bit brighter but the old ones will do. Hasn't played them in years altough.

Good news !

Pedro - Sony/BMG would never release these shows because they wouldnt sell to the general public. You have to know that by now. Thats why we have a collectors label, thats why it was formed. That being said, I wont even be buying them.
benny scott wrote on March 19, 2010
I'd welcome at least one of the 2 CDs ( although it will be impossible to buy them seperately as the release will be a duo-pack). This will give me the possibility to compare the recently bought "At full force" with the FTD release of "A Hot ..." Though I found the Audionics OK soundwise many members gave me the advise to compare the Fort Baxter with the Audionics. But how can i compare, as i don't have the Fort Baxter. Received a personal mail from Erika Freiburger (thanks again Erika ! ) with a link where I'll be able to listen to 1 (same ) song on both releases. But I have to repeat : can someone pls tell me clearly the difference in sound between Fort B. and Audion. ? As far as i could hear, my copy of "At Full Force" sounds good: bass, treble, midrange, no distortion, voice of our man clear, reaction pf public very well audible, but not disturbing the sound in general . So what's wrong with the audionics-CD ? Just asking ! Thanks for your info.

The well has run dry. This proves it. Many of us have the boots and of course some of that group will add this FTD to their collection with the promise of marginally better sound. I wont be one of them. That aside, they are two of the better gigs from that period.

I never had the imports, so I'm glad to see this!
Ton Bruins wrote on March 19, 2010
I go for the FTD releases of those 2 shows. I got the FTD fever ! No, just kidding, but At Full Force was a drama, so I go for FTD. And I want my FTD collection as complete as possible. I am curious about the sound ! The shows are good anyway. Let me say it straight: I like those 2 shows !
Sirbalkan wrote on March 19, 2010
I have the dallas show and birmingham show but that Dallas one .... THE BEST SHOW EVER,more than MSG or Hampton I think.. :)
Ton Bruins wrote on March 19, 2010
It isn't a April Fools Day joke ? Isn't it, Lex ?
Lex wrote on March 19, 2010
Nope, I don't do them often, but when I do... they are good, not as easy as this one :-)
Rejane wrote on March 20, 2010
The well is running dry? Hallelujah! I hope so! I want a complete collection of FTD cd's but the concert ones are really tiresome! Almost the exact same set list over and over and over again. I'd rather a cd with the between song chatter than the same songs over and over and over again. Just my opinion!
Steve B. wrote on March 20, 2010
I was at the Dec. 28th show. Elvis put on an amazing singing performance that night. I had seen him eleven other times prior and this night was something very special. Sadly, I didn't take any photos.

More '76 concerts from FTD??? Proves they don't have no SBs from Sep/Nov 1970, Nov 1971 or Nov 1972. We can always play our audience recordings I guess.
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on March 20, 2010
Could you try something else besides 1976? I agree that these shows belong on Ftd but mix it up just a bit will ya? If your trying to compete with imports aka bootlegs then get better at what you do! How about the Hampton roads shows from On Tour? And if your asking for help with Ftds now, how about getting someone to work with your audio & leave Lene off of any releases!
Lefty wrote on March 20, 2010
Well, cheers to FTD. I've owned both of these shows on the import labels, as well as many of the ultra rare imports, and I'm still happy to see FTD release these shows to the fans. So many collectors, especially in the US, have little or no access to "imports" and have never heard these shows. I wish that FTD would review the import top 40 list and decide to release them all! The import labels are recycling boots, recently with disasterous results. Why shouldn't FTD take a spin at it? Make it legit and accessible to all! That's my vote. And for those that are bored with another show from 76, I understand, but I got to ask you, how many times has Heartbreak Hotel been released since 1956? No one seems to mind that.
Dazman wrote on March 20, 2010
I understand the frustration of FTD's 3rd 1976 SB project since October last year, but I think we should discern the fact that any show from the December tour would be a welcome exception. If you look at the FTD top 40 'Dixieland Rocks is the only SB release (at #34) in the top 40. This double header should romp it in. Imagine what the non-bootleg collectors would be in for. PS - good comment Lefty!
Erika Freiburger wrote on March 20, 2010
Yes,these are 1976 concerts, but still these are much better than most 1973 or 1974 concerts! Though 1976 was a weak year generally,at the end of the year he gave 5 excellent shows during that mini tour. I already have these shows. Recently bought the Dallas show ("At Full Force") but the sound quality was destroyed by someone. I also have the Birmingham show ("High Voltage") but the sound was ruined there, too. Let's hope that FTD does it right. I know that they are not perfect, but i'm sure that the sound will be better than on the above mentioned 2 bootlegs. Love,Erika
benny scott wrote on March 20, 2010
Erika : I'll buy this FTD-release for sure, hoping indeed,as you wrote, the sound will be OK.And if the sound is found OK according to comments of members of this site then I'll finally will have the possibility to compare with "At Full Force". I didn't manage to find the sound samples you referred to (sorry, but thanks a lot for trying to help me !). In any case, I'll take your word for it that the Fort Baxter must be sounding better, too much other members claim the same .I was happy to have the "At Full Force" , having missed the FB. Still, maybe sound-quality is a matter of personal taste? Why do I write this ? There is a very good site in Norway where almost every released official and import-CD is quoted soundwise. They gave the Import "High Voltage" 4 on a scale of 5 . See what I mean ? Different opinions, which I respect from both sides. In a previous posting yesterday I asked in general if someone could explain in clear words what was or is the difference in soundquality between the FB and Audion... Untill now nobody seems capable to explain in a clear language what they mean. Many wrote : it's a disaster, the sound is bad or screwed up etc... I'm ready to believe that, but would like to read some good explanation. In any case : all my respect for anyone's opinion, and once again : thanks for your kind e-mails !! P.S : LEFTY : very good statement indeed !! Always El.

Smile:-) wrote on March 20, 2010
I praise FTD for their effort to "take back" what have been stolen! Even if bootleggers have released good products, even if they are recently releasede tc, FTD should not mind. In the long run we will be very happy that all these releases are kept "in the house" as a part of Elvis'official legacy. And as mentioned earlier, there are probably thousands of fans that have never been able to lay their hands on many of these legendary shows. FTD has not disappionted so far with "re-releasing" famous bootlegs. Even the Aug. 19,1974 show had slightly better sound than the boot's. Still, the following boot's must be released by FTD in addition to the tours/LV engagements that have not been covered yet: -Aug. 3, 1976 ("Opening Night"/"Return Of A Prodigy") -Opening and closing LV, Jan/Febr. 1970 (2 x Madison releases) -Nov. 10, 1971 ("One Night Only") -Jan. 26, 1972 ("Talk Of The Town") -April 1972, On Tour concerts (released by Madison a.o.) -March 3, 1974 ("Event Number 8") -March 18, 1974 ("Guaranteed To Blow Your Mind") -June 10, 1975, ("Let Me Take You Home") -Dec. 6, 1976 ("Run On")
John4126 wrote on March 20, 2010
The sound quality is only as good as your ears i guess but i dont agree that the sound quality is better on the FTD release of the Aug 19th 74 Vegas show. The opening night boot is just as good. The difference in quality between the FTD release of The wonder of you and the Audioniocs boot is negligble - i bought the latter cos it was cheaper and had a good quality booklet. FTD could learn a thing or two from that. The 2001 and Fort Baxter boots of these two 76 gigs are great - dont know about subsequent boots. I doubt whether the official releases will produce a better quality. But if you dont have these shows then buy them. The label makes the shows available for those who didnt get the boots or want to gaze at a new cover! - nothing wrong with that. I just dont think there is much left in the vaults - no soundboards of Raised on Rock, Memphis Tennessee, You'll never walk alone, Shake a hand or Pieces of my life et al - which is what would really excite me. I would rather FTD led than followed. The Hampton Roads show from 1972 is a good example. It was the subject of a vicky release but the sound was naff - not the master tapes. Get it out rather than wait for a re-vamped extended EOT DVD which doesnt appear to ever going to happen. There are numerous other shows to choose from but i really dont think they have them in their vaults. I really dont see a lot wrong with releasing these shows. They make them available for those who missed the boots or want a new cover! Where i will pat the label on the back is where they produce two shows for the price of one cd - e.g. Nevanda nights and this one.

Iam happy to hear about these releases. i agree with other people here that FTD should lead the way. i thought this year would be a great year for elvis. they should just bite the bullet and do a on tour boxset and ttwii boxset with all the complete shows and rehersals, i know its not as easy as it sounds but ftd should make it happen. opening night 1970 and closing night 1970 should be next on ftds list as a double package followed by november 1971 show instead of 1976 shows that we keep getting.
ranskal wrote on March 20, 2010
I think FTD should lead the way as well, and for the most part, I think they have. Keep in mind, the FTD label isn't very old and bootlegs have been around forever, there are going to be "re-releases" from FTD because of that. There have been shows (Tucson '76, A Minnesota Moment, New Haven '76, etc...) that have been released by FTD that were not out, as well as countless studio outtakes. I agree I would love to see more shows from the early / mid '70s as well but I am not going to be upset with FTD because we haven't seen too many. Either they don't have them or as Elvis would say... "It's a matter of time...".
Steve V wrote on March 20, 2010
I'm done with all these FTD live shows and will never buy another one unless it was one of the NY shows I attended. I would love the 1975 Uniondale show especially. FTDs are way over-priced for what you get, shabby packaging, no booklet, hard to read liner notes, etc. The bootlegs are much more impressive from what Ive seen of them. FTD's original aim was to put the bootleggers out of business but I see fans still love them.
wayup wrote on March 20, 2010
If this info is true - and I have very big doubt - it will be 5th show from 1976, released in less than 12 months by FTD: New Haven, Fort Worth re-release, Minneapolis + Dallas + Birmingham, both released twice before on bootleg. Make it sense?
HangLoose wrote on March 20, 2010
Oh... Sour grapes, wayup:) You cabn be sure that FTD won't scr.w up the sound quality. At least not as much as Audionics:)cnbh bbbbbbbbb0

Cannot believe FTD are putting this repetive stuff out in favour of the How Great Thou Art Sessions. Us fans are all getting older now, and I'd much prefer to get my hands on the remaining studio stuff than these soundbored things - "bored" being deliberately put in just in case someone jumps onto the spelling.
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on March 20, 2010
Yes how about opening and closing night 1970? Instead more from 76,and again release the Hampton roads show from On Tour! I like steve have lost interest untill they put out something worth the price which i know is asking alot since the price is quite high! Quick list ofr what i will buy from Ftd (1)On Tour show (2)Opening & Closing night 1970 (3)A good 75 show (4)Ftd release of the bootleg just pretend (5)On Stage Classic album(even though i hate the classic album idea ,i love the content)

I'm still waiting on the official announcement from FTD, until then I don't even think this is true. But believe me, if you have the BIB and the baxter release of these shows: you don't need this FTD release. These 2 old boots are 2 of the finest import releases I ever bought..
wayup wrote on March 20, 2010
Hang loose, Hang Loose ;-). Sour what? Somewhat do not understand this. I will buy these FTDs anyway just as I bought any FTD incl. these that Lene Reidel destroyed... remember them all? It is long line...

FTD. even though im happy with this new release, ftd need to think big. 1. TTWII boxset with all complete shows and rehearsals 2. On Tour Boxset with all complete shows and outtakes 3. Some More 1971 material 4. On Stage with 2nd disc a complete feb 1970 concert. 5. a double package with opening night and closing night 1970. 6. 1975 concert 7. March 1974 show i just hope to see one of those on the list this year.
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on March 20, 2010
If Ftd cant put booklets with there releases do you really think there going to put together a box set? Let me rephrase that do you think they will release a box set worth having! As mentioned ftd releases look cheap and flimbsy,of course they do offer the brillant mastering of that lene reindel!

I think Mature-Elvis-Fan should apply for writing liner notes and creating booklets at FTD's releases - that will solve all our problems, I guess! I'm sick of those stupid comments (by various members), that booklet is more (even if not *the most*) important thing about FTD! Fellows, do you wana read a book or listen to the music? *Music* is the most important thing here.

There will be Elvis fans out there who will be delighted at this news, especially those who have heard about these shows for years but never been able to track the discs down and for them at least I'm happy. I still get excited when I hear there is a new FTD release coming out - I love the soundboards - but more and more times I feel somewhat disappointed because it turns out to be another 1976 show. Nothing wrong with that in principle but please FTD can't we mix it up a bit? The man toured for eight years. The import folk have shown us what's out there (Opening/Closing 1970, Guaranteed to blow your mind from 74, Showroom Internationale from 1971). Maybe there are legal or financial restrictions I'm not seeing that prevent this but there has got to be a better choice than more from 76.

Same for me and until now I have every FTD release and I will collect them all. I hope that the sound will be better on this release. For the young Elvis fans who missed these two cd's it's a good FTD release. A waste that Pittsburgh new years eve 31-12-76 wasn't recorded on a sountboard, that would be great. Herman, I have serious information that there excist an incomplete soundboard from the Pittsburgh show and a complete one from his last one in Indianapolis. It seems that the owners ask too much money for it...

I think you're right Ton. Some time ago, I read that a welthy man in Australia (fan or not, I do not know) is sitting on the June 26, 1977 soundboard... And he has no plans whatsoever to sell/share this tape (and he obviously don't need the money). He may rightfully hold back this tape, but personally I don't understand it. To share something, doubles the value. Not only in money but in experience as well. Learn from Elvis who's greatest joy was giving:) An incomplete soundboard from Pittsburgh can't be that valuable these days (with the already released FTD audience recording, the soundboards from the same tour and the general availability of SB's). Who knows, maybe FTD has this tape already and will give us the highlights/rarities as bonus tracks on the upcoming 2CD...? I know, I am optimistic, but I have been proven right many times:)

benny scott wrote on March 22, 2010
If this is true, and the guy in Austalia doesn't need the money, then what could be the reason he doesn't want to share this tape with Elvisfans from all over the world ? Just selfishness I guess. Poor mentality ! Always El.

The main problem with people who own unreleased Elvis tapes or acetates is that they think they are worth millions, which could not be more wrong. BMG offer what they think are reasonable offers based on ever decreasing sales figures, but these people always want more. If I had access to something unreleased I would be delighted to be able to share it with other fans, that would be my reward.
Ton Bruins wrote on March 22, 2010
drjohncarpenter, you also stay to "At Full Force" ? :-)

So how would a guy in Australia have gotten hold of the Indianapolis show SB?? Back to these 2 concerts, they need to be on FTD but why weren't they released years ago? Also FTD do seem to follow the bootleggers rather than giving the fans what they want before the bootleggers do. Bootleg releases are more professional these days too so FTD need to redesign their packaging. FTD package desoign hasnt changed since it started.

Hmmm - a "wealthy guy in Australia..." Gee, the myth of what "Goose" Jackson has in his possession continues to grow. Does he or doesn't he ? I don't think we'll ever know for sure. I do think he has a few goodies that he hasn't parted with as I think at one time I read that over 600 soundboards were recorded. Wonder how many of these have been released on FTD or "imports." Here's a bit of trivia concerning Mr. Jackson - after Elvis' death, Bruce went on to be Bruce Springsteen's sound engineer.

Today we received this reaction by Ger Rijff: Friday a week ago today, the news about this forthcoming double cd release was made on this site. In a matter of minutes other sites took over the news and the first replies from fans everywhere started pouring in. Where did this news come from? Why isn't there an official FTD announcement yet? It must be a fake, only to take the pi.. out of the bootleggers, etc, etc. Many 'know it all' fans had their mind made up right away. It's been like this all week long. Guessing, only guessing. Here's what happened: friday morning a week ago I had a phone call from Ernst. We contact each other every so many weeks for a chat. Last friday he rang me to talk and update me on his Sun project. We also talked about current bootleg releases, as he had read about the At Full Force Dallas 76 re-release. After some chit chat I asked him why FTD has yet to release this concert? His reply: "we will soon, together with the Birmingham concert as a double cd." I asked if I could bring this news in the open? And his answer was: "Yes, do it today, if you like". We continued talks about where to find the needed photographs from both concerts and he said he was gonna start working on the official paperwork needed for an official release. Something that might take some time... That same morning I mailed the news to ElvisNews. That's the story behind it. Take it or leave it.
