FTD Messed Up

March 25, 2014 | Music

Just stumbled upon this message by FTD:

It has come to our attention that track 1 and 2 of Disc 1 for Destination USA have been duplicated incorrectly from our ‘Sold Out' CD. Please be advised that we are manufacturing Disc 1replacements ASAP and these will be sent out with our new April releases. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

Good that they have responded QUICKLY to this 'mistake' and DOES SHOW people at FTD read message boards.....even if they do not say so!~I bet someone made a mistake with files on their FTD computer eh??,..not even SA have made this type of mistake yet!~

If true, then the heading for this topic should be - "FTD Messed Up... Again"

Ftd is cute with its attempt at a collectors label, mistakes ,rehashing, lost interest.
VivaLasDavies wrote on March 26, 2014
The usual (and so predictable) negative garbage about what is just a mistake which they are rectifying.

Were they drunk ???

Bashing is easy when you are on the other side....I am glad we have Ernst & Co. And the mistake will be rectified..so all is fine now..

Humans make mistakes (we all do) and perfection is not of this world. Mistake will be undone by FTD so as far as i'm concerned : not the end of the world ! Wanna thank FTD for all the good stuff they released in the past. Always El.

predictable is a good word for ftd, they have no quality control!

Can I be the only person here to groan every time I see a post from the previous "fan". Has a name ever been less appropriate?

Anyone can mess up but how can such a thing can happen : different venues, years... how can things like that happen that songs 1 & 2 from a given show are removed to be replaced by those from another one ? Would be interested to know about the way a CD is made down there. And also why none got it at quality check. No irony here : just can't understand and would love to know about their process. By the way - none died here but how are they going to send a replacement CD to all that got it wrong ?

Not a moan here, merely an observation, but while we're on the subject of FTD mess ups has anyone else noticed the timings given for the live show tracks on the new "Elvis" CD. They are all the same! How clever of Elvis to make every song run exactly the same length.

I agree with the sensible folk here. FTD have been magnificent in releasing 99% quality material for a star that left us 37 years ago. My other entertainment favourites Star along with FTD have made my interests a whole lot more enjoyable than just waiting around for the occasional official quality 'public' releases.

Mikael - I was wondering exactly the same thing. I would think that the reel-to-reel tape would've been mixed/mastered as a whole - from start to finish. How does it end up in pieces (track by track) so that another file or two replaces the opening files from the reels/cassette of the show ? There is a part of me that feels that the FTD team got caught with its hand in the cookie jar and had to fess up and make replacement discs. Wasn't that long ago that FTD admitted to messing up the track order of the CD that came with the "Fashion" book. If nothing else, this sheds some light on the mastering process used by FTD. I can envision a laptop full of singular files of songs that are pieced together by someone using audicity on a Dell laptop and then "viola !" a new FTD. Oops - must have grabbed the wrong opening song - hope no one notices... lol

Hello. These errors (ie, wrong timings, wrong tracklistings, and - unbelievably - wrong recordings) happen way too often with FTD. It's an expensive, gold standard label for connoisseurs. So no excuse for Camden-era shoddiness. Feeble attention to detail.

Viva why not stick to the rules? If you call it moaning then call it moaning, i like nice products, put together with effort not second rate hack jobs that ftd r known for. There a second rate label, of course cisco likes them, he has worked for them. If your happy just to have ftd then by all means keep buying every release, even it comes with errors. They have no quality control, they bring this on thereselves because they dont learn from there mistakes.

Stuff happens, they're putting it right. Even though the original source is an open reel tape, the digital transfer gets chopped up into individual files because that is how it needs to be on the CD, otherwise it would be just one long track. I agree with Viva, the constant complaining about everything is very immature. FTD are far from perfect, but the good things are never mentioned, everything is just negative. Even Cisco came in for a bashing when he made a sensible comment because he works with FTD, it's pathetic.

I haven't received my copy yet, We, as Elvisfans, shouldn't complain that much. there not an artist in the world from who outtakes and live shows are released in such a quality. we should be happy. I do agree ftd should do something about the control of there products. But al in all I'm glad that there is FTD. they will replace the cd so they dealed with it the best way possible. If you don't like the FTD-relaeses just don't buy them.
VivaLasDavies wrote on March 27, 2014
I am "sticking to the rules". I'm avoiding saying what I really think of your constant carping. I can think of NO other artist who is as well served as Elvis via FTD. After years of rubbish we finally got a dedicated label regularly issuing product fans of other artists could only dream of. Do they get EVERYTHING right? Of course not but just imagine being an Elvis fan without FTD - long may it last.

FTD has had some quality control issues over the years, not surprisingly as the budget for these productions must be relatively small. After all it is a small label aimed exclusively at few die hard Elvis fans. What did you expect? Even the biggest corporations and the very best employees are likely to make some blunders now and then. If we want to be fair we should praise FTD (and the people behind it) for what it is, i.e. an amazing record company releasing an astonishing number of high quality cd's and books every year. A dream come true for every Elvis fan around the world. Not everyone will like everything but there's something for everyone. The available unreleased material is now very limited and any lost session tapes are difficult if not impossible to locate (if they still exist). Enjoy it while it lasts... Thanks FTD!

Marty : very well said, I couldn't agree more !!! Always El.

No FTD isn't perfect and all their products may not cater for everyone but if you close your eyes for a moment and just imagine what life would have been like over the last 10 years or so without them I think I would rather put up with the odd mistake here and there and live with them, than without.
Orion wrote on March 28, 2014
Marty - you bring up a very good point that I wholeheartedly agree with - I am sure the budget for these FTDs is 'relatively' small compared to the money spent for mainstream releases. However, I can't help but feel if a similar label was run for Beatles recordings (or whomever) that the countless mistakesthat FTD has made for Elvis (kind of an important figure in music history, dont'cha think ?) wouldn't be tolerated by the parent company. Whether it be quality control or some other title, the releases seem to be often haphazardly assembled. I am sure that GravelRoad has nowhere near the buget or resources that Ernst has at his disposal, but look at the "Return of the Prodigy" release comapred to the packaging of "Hot August Night" on FTD. I'm sure there are numerous other 'imports' that seem to be better produced than some of the FTDs that have been released. I don't want to be all negative. After all, the recent "Sold Out" is in a class by itself due in large part to the excellent work by Cisco and the team that he was a part of. This is the kind of release that is/was fit for a King. Sorry, couldn't resist that one. I just wish that all the releases were put together in this manner. If so, we wouldn't be debating this 'slip up' by FTD.

Talking about messing up and making mistakes : FTD's 'Elvis' (second album) was released at the same time as 'Destination....'. Disc 2 of 'Elvis' contains our man's last Hayride performance, dated December 15 1956. The earlier release of Memphis Recording Service's 'The Complete Louisiana Hayride Archives' says the concert took place one day later, December 16 1956, and MRS is not the only one . Several other sources state the last Hayride performance took place on December 16 1956. Someone any idea how come two different dates are mentioned ??? Thanks in advance ! Always El.
TheMemphisFan wrote on March 29, 2014
December 15, 1956 was on a Saturday and is the correct date for Elvis' final Louisiana Hayride performance.
benny scott wrote on March 30, 2014
Hi Memphisfan, thanks for your reply ! I checked the 1956 calendar too, yes Dec 15 was a Saterday and as far as I know probably all Louisiana Hayride shows took place on a Saterday. So I think MRS (and some other sources) made a mistake, they should have doublechecked and looked for the correct date. So FTD is not the only one making mistakes. That's why I do not complain when such thing happens now and then. Always El.

We all get a new cd, so the damage is minimal. Mistakes are to be found everywhere. I don't make my life dependent on these flaws. Interesting points Benny and MemphisFan. Thanks.

as we read the artikel; anyone an idee what the april releases will be??
schemies wrote on April 01, 2014
Well, mistakes will happen, but I wonder why the producer has no time to check at least the first CD pressed, because this mistake can be detected easily. And I wonder why they do not concentrate on one release, and then go to the next release, instead of making two at the same time. Also I do not understand why this release got the Classic Album packaging, because the front cover photo is not sharp, the release seems not to be so very special (because the concert was released on boot before, the rehearsal sound quality is quite poor for a FTD release, and the February songs are more or less left over versions of what we have heard before in more inspired versions from the same season), so why not a standard packaging for this one? So let's see if the next releases will be somehow improved again.

The samples I have heard of this release have terrible tape hiss. Its louder than the music. Has anyone who have the discs had this experience?
benny scott wrote on April 02, 2014
Hi santiagisitestar, I ordered this release but it's not in my possession yet. Can hardly believe the the sound of the cd will be that terrible ! You talk about 'samples', so I think there's something wrong wit the audio of the samples and the hiss you heard has nothing to do with the music on the cd itself . Always El.
