i'm confused? is this both the original 1970 film, and the 2001 special edition both on blu-ray? seems like 2001 is just a dvd where as the 1970 is a blu-ray...any thought anyone?

Wow, looks good to me..... but did I read it right.....is disc 1 just a dvd with the special edition from 2001 and is the original 1970 version a blu ray ? Very strange if this is right, why not both versions on 1 blu ray disc ?

The information is backwards. Here's the correct info --> Special Features: Disc 1 (BD) 2001 Special Edition and Special Features: · Patch It Up: The Restoration of Elvis: That's The Way It Is · 12 Outtakes - song/nonmusical sequences · 1970 Original Theatrical Version Disc 2 (DVD) 1970 Original Theatrical Version and Special Features: · 12 Outtakes - song/nonmusical sequences

The picture on the cover (not the best cover design btw) doesn't do any justice to the quality of Blu-ray. Of course, old films have to be remastered to the high resolution Blu-ray is capable of. And this is what I'm sceptical about on this release. Although the 2001 version was a vast improvement quality-wise on the 1970 release on DVD, I'm afraid all the producers have done is 'copy and paste' the already available versions from DVD to Blu-ray. No remastering was done to the 1970 version when released on DVD in 2007 and the picture quality suffers from too much grain and faded colors. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. Even the featurette and outtakes are the same ones as released before and add nothing new to this release. And to think there's hours and hours of unreleased footage lying about in Turner's (or whoever) vaults. Lastly, 4k Ultra High Definition, claimed to be 4 times better than Blu-ray, is on its way. But that's another story.

There is no need for people in the UK to miss out on "Elvis On Tour", it is available on Blu-ray in PAL format on the UK branch of Amazon for just over ten pounds. Regarding the master that will be used to create this forthcoming release, it is possible that the master used on the DVD release could be used if the scan was done in HD. This does not mean that the DVD will be used to create the Blu-ray discs. Companies have been scanning films in HD for years, long before Blu-ray was around. We used to have a similar mix up years ago, people would assume that a VHS master was a VHS tape. It wasn't, it was the tape used to produce the VHS tape.

Can somebody PLEASE tell me what the 12 outtakes are?

Great News ! hope they will be region free like the on tour bluray

I think you will find the European version on Amazon is actually a Spanish sleeve! It will play fine in English & is the required Region B for Europe. (US BluRays are Region A! Think A for America & B for British if you can't remember!) Actually the US 2000 version already available appears to be region free; at least mine plays OK on a non-modified UK player & on PS3. As for what is on the new BluRay, it does seem they have got their information in a muddle. I hope this definitely means the original 1970 version will now be on BluRay, shame if it is not. As for the extra 12 out-takes etc, is it possible these are the extra songs etc already added to the 2000 version? Hope not! The other concern is that if the two versions are both on the same BluRay disc then there will be a lot of compression, resulting in poorer quality. Let's hope they don't do this... please get it right. As for "Viva Las Vegas" well, that is one of the few Elvis films we've already got that on Bluray! And finally, will these be released in Europe??

Ooh goody. Really looking forward to this. I thought improvements in picture and sound quality were quite evident in the Viva Las Vegas Blu-Ray, so when you consider the amount of restoration work which was done on TTWII SE all that time ago, I have high hopes for this release. Most Blu-Rays are region free and I don't see why this one would be any different. Having said that, I do worry that given what happened with the "On Tour" Blu-Ray, I hope there aren't any such technicalities with TTWII. One final point: My God, is it really 14 years since the release of TTWII SE? Seems like last week we were all as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve waiting to see that!

Very good news ! Except when this will be region free of course....will it be region free ?
EJF wrote on April 26, 2014
All Blu-ray releases in the U.S from Warner Home Video (among other film companies) are Multi-Region and play perfectly in Europe on Region B players, even though the sleeve states "Region A." As I already pointed out in my previous post there are websites that tell you which Blu-ray titles are region free, such as blu-raydotcom. Of course, TTWII has not been tested yet but I can safely say it will be no different from other Warner Bros. Blu-rays. "On Tour," which I purchased from the U.S. is also Region Free and plays perfectly on my Blu-ray Region B player.

A Bluray disc has a much larger capacity and should easily accommodate both films without any compression issues.

Good news ! kind of ... doesn't sound like these movies were mastered to Blu-Ray standard in which case it seems like a stop off point to a proper Blu Ray of both films or deluxe box. Better than nothing but I'm expecting to replace it eventually I suppose...

I will buy this release only IF the audio/video quality of the original '70 version OF TTWII has been upgraded. However, If all WB did was stick the lousy looking/sounding print issued on the double DVD set in 2007 on this release, I'm not the least bit interested. I detest the 2000 re-edit.
Steve V wrote on April 27, 2014
Jerry, detest is a strong word lol. Why so? You have to admit having more Elvis footage is certainly better than more fan footage especially Cricket the cat. I was unhappy they cut out some of the songs from the 1970 orig, but I still think the redit is a better film experience. It seems though when it comes to Elvis, they just never get it 100% on the money. I will agree to that.
JerryNodak wrote on April 27, 2014
Okay, detest is a strong word. I dislike the re-edit. The re-edit is a bunch of concert clips strung together and has little in common with the original film concept (which I prefer). As I originally stated, I will buy this IF the original TTWII has improved audio/video. Otherwise, no sale. I won't buy it for the BD re-edit. That's the way it is.
Lou A wrote on April 27, 2014
As someone already mentioned , the original is a documentary , the re-edit is a concert film. I also prefer the original, but I don't dislike the re-edit. It's nice to have both . What would be better yet would be another edit featuring all of the songs plus some of the "other stuff". I know , it would have a long running time , but so what! It's for the fans after all. And speaking of releases for the fans , I'll neve figure out why we haven't yet gotten a multi-disc as complete as possible TTWII release like the 68 Comeback and Aloha sets. That goes for On Tour as well.

I consider the original film a masterpiece. The 'special edition' lacks a director. I offered to create another masterpiece called Rancho Grande of the shelved footage but got no reply. The cover could have been for House of Wax.

More rebuying what you already have,it should have been on blu ray along time ago!
Chop983 wrote on May 02, 2014
I also think that the song selection is stonger on the original, I cannot understand why they left out 'I just can't help believing' and there are far to many old hits, I would have prefered more of the contempary material. But I suppose they thought this would attract more new fans.
WayDownUnder wrote on May 03, 2014
I went and saw the Special Edition at the cinema 7 times when it came out in 2000. Prior to that I hadn't watched the original for many years. I didn't care for the original 'fans comments' then and I don't care for them now. I do miss 'I've Lost You' from the original however 'I Got a Woman', 'The Wonder of You' and the powerful 'Just Pretend' more than make up for it. The Special Edition is vibrant, exciting and is about the music.

Have to say I prefer my original video of this because when he sing's "One Night" the camera is at his back but with the orig video you see Elvis at his bluesiest best, yes I'll stick with the vid.

Btw agree about the "fans" comment's and the convention so embarressing particlarly the "Don Partridge" look-a-like LOL with the video I can edit them out to disc...with DVD can't do that.
