Elvis Sessions IV

January 17, 2009 | Book

JAT Publishing announced that their work on Elvis Sessions IV book is already in progress although it will take awhile before its release.

There are a lot of discussions about the Standing Room Only project on different sites/forums and here's a quote from an interview done in 1993 with the late Joan Deary for Sessions II that will be featured in Elvis Sessions IV:

'Standing Room Only was never intended to include the selections recorded in Las Vegas in February or the single material that was cut in March. The final project was scrapped but my intent all along with RCA and The Colonel was to release a live album based on the best of the four shows recorded in April on tour. I even went as far as compiling my own track listing from these shows, our goal was to increase single sales and it worked. This is how it was going to be no matter what anyone else says ''...

I think Ernst has said that the "Standing Room Only" LP song selection changed a couple time before the concept was abandoned. The single "An American Trilogy b/w The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" clearly states on the cover that "An American Trilogy" is from the forthcoming "Standing Room Only" LP. "An American Trilogy" was recorded in February, 1972, not April, 1972.

I Agree with William's comment, although I think Joan Deary concept is way much better!

I wonder if Mr. Tunzi will be looking at the excellent site of a certain Mr. Flynn for the extra info he's planning to use in 'Sessions 43'?

i always heard thats what standing room only was supposed to be as well. a show from elvis on tour which was the orginal name of the movie. the madison square garden concert caused that to be thrown out the window.

Joan Deary was so right ! Such a brave person who dared to voice her realistic and far more creative knowledge on how EP releases and songs should be mastered (something that hillbilly Felton was not able to do at all...) Listen to all those outtakes in 1970 till 77 and you'll agree that Deary's recommendations were far better than the final result (a true boycott by Felt, isn't it IRAY) listen to so many fantstic outtakes on LLetters, Now, Fool, GT and even certain hits. Hopefully StRoom will bring us something interesting and appealing to our ears. How much will this new JAT book cost? Another rip off or worthwhile to have in our collection? $55 or $75??Sorry, Tunsi, you are outtpricing yourself.

Before some people here elevate Joan Deary to Sainthood, why did she tell several fans that RCA had a recording of one of the Memphis '61 charity shows (when they didn't) and why did she remove some essential outtakes from the vaults (Elvis Is Back, Viva Las Vegas etc.) that were later sold to private collectors? Seems to me that she was only out for looking after Number One.
