Elvis Campaign Brings Back Listeners To BBC Radio 2

February 01, 2007 | Other
The BBC’s high-profile marketing drive for its radio stations has produced only modest results, according to the latest Rajar figures. The corporation launched several television campaigns to promote its stations and individual DJs last year, most notably the Radio 2 TV spot (pictured) which showed Elvis Presley on stage with famous musicians including Noel Gallagher and the Sugababes.

Radio 2, boosted by the Elvis campaign, added 500,000 listeners over the three months, rising to 13.26 million. However, the station has only regained listeners lost throughout 2006.

This is EPE at their best -cooperating with broadcasters! Everybody should take note that this BBC Radio 2 Elvis Presley promotion ADDED half a million listerners, when at the same time you have to realise that in the USA there is barely a single radio station which can boasts half a million listeners.

Jimmy Cool has got it right, they do play Elvis from time to time ( not enough in my opinion. the trouble with the station is they are trying to attract the younger listner & not catering. for the older listner ( I'm 59 ) they tend to play the same record's all the time as do the Golden satation's. I have tried to catch the Elvis commercial on BBC 2 but sometime's they cut it down, but it does sound very much like Elvis, whoever it is !

Go to the radio 2 web site and download the podcast of "Ask Elvis" from Steve Wright in the afternoon. It is on weekly and is easily the funniest thing on radio. Steve Wright plays around 3 Elvis tracks when this segment of the show is on and not the tracks you'd expect either. It is hilarious, but still done with respect for Elvis, but don't bother if you're one of those fans who goes on a killing spree everytime someone says something humourous about Elvis. As for the rest of Radio 2, it is probably the most "Elvis friendly" station out there, and their recent 1 hour special on the million dollar quartet was fantastic. The only weak spot is Ken Bruce, who obviously can't stand Elvis; as the acidic comments he makes whenever Elvis is mentioned are a little too cynical. As for the TV ad, the only thing I can say about it is that it really was good to watch, but I only saw it at around the hours of midnight, which might explain the relatively low figures, I certainly wouldn't call it "High Profile".

You got it right there Viva, the only thing i'd argue with is the Ken Bruce thing i think he's a bit moore tonge in cheek than he sometime's come's across. The Ask Elvis section is a scream and all done with great humour
