Synopsis:

This CD includes the complete archives from KWKH's Louisiana Hayride radio show. Recorded between 1954 & 1956. Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit technology. Heard through the mists of time (and the extensive crackling of the ancient master acetates from which they were taken), these collected mid-'50s radio performances from LOUISIANA HAYRIDE provide a unique opportunity to witness Elvis Presley's evolution from nervous, raw, untutored talent to embryonic rock & roll superstar. Several versions of his early hits, including "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and "That's All Right Mama," are featured--the latter in particular undergoes an audible improvement in the three months between the different takes presented here. In addition, there to a couple of rare versions of "Tweedle Dee" and a twangin' rendition of "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine." The early cuts are the most revelatory, with an audibly nervous Presley exchanging pleasantries with the announcer after a cigarette commercial and then launching into "That's All Right Mama" to a somewhat stilted reception. All that changes within the space of two short years, of course, and by the time he's performing a brashly confident "Hound Dog" in 1956, complete with fake stuttering intro, the music is drowning in a sea of adolescent screams. THE ELVIS BROADCASTS: ON AIR provides a fascinating glimpse into the formative years of a rock & roll legend.
