Elvis And Ginger

December 16, 2013 | Book

Ginger Alder's view on her life with Elvis will be published on August 5, 2014 by Berkely Hardcover. This is what the publisher says about the book:

"“Elvis, you and I know the truth and unfortunately you’re not here to set the record straight. With this book, I will try to...”

Elvis Presley and Graceland were fixtures in the life of Ginger Alden, having been born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. But she had no idea that she would play a part in that enduring legacy—as Elvis Presley’s fiancée, and his last great love. For over three decades Ginger has held the truth of their relationship close to her heart. Now she shares her unique story, and while a lot has been written about the King, the Elvis we meet in this long-anticipated memoir is a revelation.

In her own words Ginger details their whirlwind romance—from first kiss to his stunning proposal of marriage. She details his exploration of Eastern religions, his perception of being a “legend,” his devotion to family and friends, and her attempt to know the insular group surrounding Elvis. And for the very first time she talks about the devastating end of it all, and the 50,000 mourners and reporters who descended on Graceland in 1977, exposing Ginger to the reality of living in the spotlight of a short, yet immortal, life.

Above it all, Alden rescues Elvis from the hearsay, rumors, and tabloid speculations of his final year by shedding a frank yet personal light on a very public legend. From a unique and intimate perspective, she reveals the man—complicated, romantic, fallible, and human—behind the enduring myth, a superstar worshipped by millions, and loved by Ginger Alden."

Seems a bit late in the day for this kind of stuff to me - I mean what can she tell us that we don't already know? I'd rather the book by Steve Binder. Elvis looks great on the cover though.

She could've released a book years ago, just like everybody else wanting to make money out of Elvis' name. However she opted for holding it back until she decided was the best moment, which proves it's not really only money she's after. For this, I have a great deal of respect for Ginger and I think this book is very welcome as we're going to have her side of the story of Elvis' final years. She is beautiful and seems to be a lovely woman. Besides, the fact that Elvis was proud of having her as his girlfriend, even bringing her for everyone to see at the CBS shows, only makes me think she was special too.

I am not sure many fans on this forum and other Elvis sites want the whole truth from this period. I am in the distinct minority that can sit through the 1977 CBS tapes and enjoy vast slices of the finished article while others can't even watch it. However, I think enough has been written about this specific era and we should just enjoy the best parts and move on.

What could she possibly say that merits buying yet another book about Elvis?

I know it is Christmas and I should be more forgiving but Ginger and Lucy de Barbin the real heroes in his life - give me a break. One woman other than bloodlines was his hero and mine - Priscilla Presley. What she put up when married and the restoration of his estate, (yes of course money came into it), and the way she conducts herself in public is par excellence. Ann Margaret, and Ginger would have disappeared within a year or two as our boy just loved the ladies.

Have to agree with you Gorse about Priscilla! Think Linda Thompson really loved our man but couldn't get used to his way of living in the end. Linda: yes, Ginger : no.c Just my opinion, nobody has to agree with me, to each his own. Always El.

I always make a deal with myself. I don't criticize the author or the book until after I've read it.
