Echoes Of The Past

April 01, 2013 | Other

Ger Rijff is active again. Together with Bob he started a new website. Mainly focussing on the 50s, Elvis of course, but also other typical 50's stuff, like the teenage-rage, drive-in theatres, rock 'n' roll music, diners, soda machines, the wonderful movieposter-art, jukeboxes, etc.

Good to have him back and no jumpsuits!
Gorse wrote on April 02, 2013
I am no expert on Elvis pics but this is new to me and represents the man and the musical rebellion in the 50's. Nothing wrong however with jumpsuits in the 70's, as the 2 combined with the more conventional 60's made me a life long fan.

100% agree with you Gorse, it is the diversity in Elvis' career, both in his looks and in his music and in his live performance that made me a 29 year long fan. And give me Elvis' worst jumpsuit over The Beatles Sgt. Pepper outfit or their dull suits any day of the week !!

And not to speak of those half naked guys and other weardos that were around in those days! He was wearing a stage costume. Don't make such a fuzz about it. The above photo is also not the most flattering pose (smile).

That is a cool pic! Also special that Ritchie Valens is standing next to him! Some treasure!..

Jerome, there's no Ritchie Valens on this picture. Valens never met Elvis. Nevertheless a cool pic!

Great site, Ger! Great to see so much cool stuff all together. I look at it all and can't believe that the bloated bloke in all the bling and clown suits in those '76 photos is the same fellow. How very sad. Great to see so much stuff about the relevent Elvis and not the later one who was just going through the motions and killing himself in the process. Of course, the jumpsuit junkies won't agree but your site isn't for them so don't worry. Spot-on, Ger!

So if you like jumpsuits then you can not also like the 50' Elvis !!, that is about the stupidest remark I ever read on this site (and that is saying a lot). It is sad how people always try to divide the fans up in those who prefer either the 50' or the 70' Elvis, instead of agreeing that we are all fans of the greatest entertainer that ever lived, and often in the process they take Elvis as a prisoner and ridicule him in their arguments against other fans tastes. By the way, Elvis thought he himself looked like a clown in the gold lama suit (from the 50' !!) and therefor started to wear the jacket by itself.

Good to have him back and no jumpsuits? What a unwelcomed comment, but expected from the one who posted it !
dgirl wrote on April 07, 2013
Hey GK - I don't like the 7 years of jumpsuits. Am I entitled to have that opinion? I am not alone judging by another post here. Not everyone likes everything Elvis did. I love the 50's best and apparently so does Ger and others. I will not apologize for that. And talk about expected comments. You can Always expect Beatles put downs by the same people on this site. What do they even have to do with the subject at hand here? The same people out of jealousy or whatever, always bring them into a topic. BTW, how the heck can you even compare uniforms The Beatles wore for ONE album cover, and one that fit the theme of the album, to never ending years of jumpsuits? How is that even a fair comparison? The HATERS show their intelligence again.

If it is only the 50's area, then i'll leave it in the past. Elvis is not only the 50's were he was only 3 years active!

Dgirl, its not just, the "Jumpsuit" issue, here. Its more so about, how a majority of your posts, are so negitive about Elvis Presley. It gets to be a bit much. When you accomplish as much as he did as a singer, musician, entertainer, actor, maybe I will take your comments more seriously. I personally never compared Elvis to the Beatles, so please don't lump me into that group. Elvis Presley, was an amazing talent in every decade of his career. And if you love an artist, you find the best in the big picture.
dgirl wrote on April 07, 2013
Any negativity I have is now my honest assessment after following Elvis since 1956. Yes, he accomplished more than any singer who ever lived, but while he was alive, I looked at everything he did as fabulous. Now in retrospect, I guess I see things a lot differently. How he was manipulated by a con artist manager, how he didn't have the guts to just say no when he was so unhappy during the movies and Vegas years. How he always promised to tour Europe but never did, how he promised never to sing a song he didn't believe in again after the '68 Special, yet we were treated to substandard releases in the 70's. The list goes on and on. If that's being negative, ok, but it is also my honest opinion. And to top it off, the years of jumpsuits really gets to me because it spurned the most negative aspect ever of his career, the endless stream of embarrassing Elvis imposters.

At least I don't go over to a Beatles fan site and start ridiculing them and at the same time try to promote Elvis ! And George is right, the majority of your posts are real negative about Elvis, unless it is the 50' Elvis or the "comeback"- period, and even then most of your positive comments are followed by some negative statements such as ; "from then it all went downwards" or "why didn't he stay with American sound studios" or "before all the horrible movie songs" (I am not quoting 100% but it is in the same vein ). And please don't talk about other peoples intelligence when it is you who are forced to exaggerate others points of view just so you can put them down, both you and a couple of other people on this site always accuse people who are primarily positive about Elvis' career of liking/loving EVERYTHING Elvis did, who has ever said that ? ! And NO ONE have asked you to apologize for anything, but I personally will point out every time I see a post that I find unfair to Elvis or his legacy . Maybe if I just one time saw you defend Elvis the same way you go crazy every time someone criticize The Beatles I will stop to mention them, but it seems really weird that you can find so many bad things about Elvis but always defend The Beatles, who funny enough had many of the same views on Elvis as you have.

Every phase of Elvis Presley's career was pretty darn great, despite a few mis-steps, here and there. And who are we to be "critical", because we see things differently, after reading, the behind the scene accounts, of things? Bottom line, Elvis Presley had more career highs than lows and accomplished more, in his short 42 years of Life, than most do in a Lifetime, and his Legacy continues to entertain the world.
