Becky Martin Has Died

June 10, 2004 | People
Becky Martin of Tupelo, MS, died in the early morning hours of 9 June of heart failure. Becky Martin has been, for decades, the true friend of all Elvis fans who visited the EP birthplace home in Tupelo.

Becky Martin knew Elvis from the very early years, she was with him at the Mississippi/Alabama Fair show were Elvis won the 5th place in place talent show were he sang Old Shep.

Becky has been battling cancer for years; had been in and out of hospitals, always fighting that dread disease with the heart of a warrior; and more recently had been transferred to a Tupelo rehab center.

Hi Butterfly, So sorry for your own personal loss and that of Becky Martin's family. She was a true ambassador and when I visited Tupelo was grateful for all the works she helped with. May she rest in peace and may God help her be reunited with Elvis. Hope your pain eases a little eventually.

Becky's death is a great loss to Elvis fans & Tupelo. I knew her for many years & always valued her friendship. She drove myself & my wife Julie around Tupelo many times, showing us exactly where Shakerag used to be & many other Elvis sites now gone, including the grocery store the Presley's used (Now a barbers in a new building!) She developed cancer in her gums & jaw about a year & a half ago, & that really started her decline. She will be greatly missed by many English fans for her hospitality. She was always a great friend to Elvis – May she rest in peace. Bernard Roughton

what a sad news, the only time I met Becky was in 2000, it was too early to visit Elvis' birthhouse so I went for a drink, someone asked me what I was doing there and so we talked about Elvis, this person then told me that I HAD to see Becky cause she knew Elvis personally. I went to her house, knocked at the door, she looked at me from head to toe and asked: ARE YOU AN ELVIS FAN? I answered: YES! and from that moment she welcomed me into her home like a family member, what a wonderful memory about a wonderful person. I will be in Tupelo in August and will bring her a rose.

Next august I will be in Tupelo Mississippi, I always went to Becky's house just around the corner of Elvis birthplace. It will not be the same without her.

Hello my name is J.W. Brown and I live in Tupelo Ms. I am proud to say Becky was one of, if not my best friend . I have just returned from Becky's wake and Becky chose me to be one of her pallbearers. I always loved to do any thing I could for Becky and if you knew her you would know why. I am honored to do this for her. I have spent the day with her family at her home and would like to thank all the fans for their calls and flowers. I would like to thank Lisa and her mom for the flowers, also EPI in Memphis and the foundation in Tupelo. I will tell you that Becky was in a lot of pain in the past few weeks and it broke my heart to see her that way. I got to see her 3 times last week and she was a fighter to the end. I heard many wonderful stories tonight that I am sure you would have loved to hear. The Elvis world has lost a champion, Tupelo has lost a great ambassador, and I have lost my best freind. Thank you for time. J.W. Brown

I met Becky in 1999. I went to Tupelo on my Elvis pilgrimage and after having visited the Tupelo hardware store and been told about her, I knocked on her door and she invited me in as a friend.....even though she had never met me before. I asked questions about Elvis and she answered them at her ease and we talked for a long time and she made me feel right at home. She sent me a letter and some photos as she had promised and I still have, and treasure them now. I will treasure them even more now Becky has gone. I am saddened to hear of Becky passing away, but having only met her once I can confirm all the things that her life long friends say about her. She was the most amazing person and may she rest in peace. From someone who once had the pleasure of the company of Becky Martin. Kevin Hart

I was a very close friend to Miss Becky for a number of years. She was like a second Mother to me. When her nephew called me to inform me of the tragic news...it hit me quite hard. I loved her so as she had a very kind heart and only did her best to keep Elvis's legacy fresh in the minds of many. She did so much for me that I wouldn't know where to begin. May she rest in peace forever in God's kingdom and I will aways lay roses on her grave side with the fondest of memories of her.
