Great release FTD! Looks like a winner to me. Keep up the good work guys. A lot of outtakes in great sound.

I'm not sure why or how, but I know within the next day or so someone will find something to bit*h about this FTD. This one looks a super release. This is an example as to why I've continued to stick with FTD when so many others have stopped supporting Ernst and his efforts.

While not one of my favorite LP's (not bit*hing), it is very worthy of a classic release. I always wished that RCA had made this a 12 track LP with "I'll Be There" and "If I'm A Fool" rounding out the release. I understand the live version of "Suspicious Minds" on the live LP of the original two record set was the reason for not including the single version on this LP.

I LOVE this album. I agree, having "I'll Be There" and "If I'm A Fool" on the original album would have been fantastic, and yet, they are STILL not on ths FTD! Maybe those, and "Don't Cry Daddy", "Kentucky Rain" and "Rubberneckin'" will be on the From Elvis In Memphis FTD. This will be the best FTD release ever (until they do From Elvis In Memphis)

Always Loved this album. And the outakes, on this new FTD collection, make the album, even more special. The Memphis sessions, in my opinion, is Elvis, at his absolute best. And I agree, that "I'll be there", & "If I'm a Fool For Loving You", should have been added as bonus tracks. Thankfully we have the legacy collection that combined "From Elvis in Memphis" and "Back in Memphis" in one collection. Two of his strongest albums !
VivaLasDavies wrote on November 06, 2012
Assuming no bonus tracks are added to the "From Elvis In Memphis" classic album, a third Memphis album could be created using the nine remaining songs. This would ensure adequate space is available across the two discs to include most of the available outtakes. ( Hopefully before long a similar "classic album" will be created for the late 60's pre Memphis material).

Miss "If I'm a fool & I'll be there & Stranger in my own home town slow " song outtakes on this one (takes 9 till 12, the very funny ones !) and if they add SMinds, then why not all the other (good & different) outtakes of In the Ghetto ?! Sloppy Ernst. Also miss on From EP Blvd the X-rated Hurt outtake. These last two (commercially ) weak albums should have been released like one strong one by Sony/BMG...on Legacy, if only they had added bonus songs My way and America !

hmmm wouldn't it have made more sense to put suspicious minds on 'from elvis in memphis' as it was released with that album at the time?
kink56 wrote on November 07, 2012
I think the logic of having Suspicious Mind here, is because the flip side, You'll Think of Me is on here.

These "Unfinished Masters", they couldn't possibly be the ones containing Elvis original vocals before they were removed and he re-recorded them, could they? I hope so!
Tony C wrote on November 07, 2012
Sometimes I do wonder about people, how can someone mourn the omission of recordings that do not exist? The master of "Stranger In My Own Home Town" was take one and the unedited version is included on this set. "I'll Be There", "If I'm a Fool (For Loving You)" and "In The Ghetto" are not on this package because they were never on "Back In Memphis". As for the talk of the "My Way"/"America" single being missing from "From Elvis Presley Boulevard", those two tracks had no connection with the original album, they were not from the same sessions and were not even released in the same year. It is so easy to research this subject, the information is at our fingertips, but then I suppose that would take away the chance to complain.

Hello, the original BIM and FEIM albums are available as connoisser releases in the Legacy series. So, rather than FTD issue them again, this time as connoisseur's connoisseur releases, it would have been better for Sony to release a 4-5 CD box set, or for FTD to release 2 or 3 double-CD volumes, of the American Studios sessions. 'The American Way' bootleg is a good model.
kink56 wrote on November 07, 2012
Tony C..... Stuck On You was never on Elvis is Back either! Nor was Sylvia on Love Letters From Elvis. .It is typical for FTD to include the associated material on their Classic Albums issues. Most of the time it is the singles from the session (Like the EIB, SFE and Pot Luck FTDs) so to have all the songs from the 69 session released on BIM and FEIM would not be out of line. I am just wondering how they are going to fit the remaining singles, Don't Cry Daddy, Kentucy Rain, Rubberneckin', My Little Friend, Moma Liked The Roses and the strays like Who Am I, I'll Be There, and If I'm A Fool (and YIKES Hey Jude) and the outtakes on the eventual FEIM Or if they are going to have a 3rd volume from these sessions?

Fully endorse also Jamie's comments and valid suggestions. But Kink is also right (listen Tony, please) that next releases should only carry what was on the original release ! No way friends ! Let's further enhance, upgrade those earlier releases and bring them up to speed 2013 way...when young customers don't buy Elvis as much anymore...and the older fans may have to curtail their spending on EP materials due to the crisis and also, they already have most of those for years....! So, I have, again, bought this Back in M FTD b u t I do hope that FTD includes/ADDs also the live versions of "I really don't want to know, Hurt, You're the reason I'm living, My way & America onto the next to come "Moody Blue FTD" hopefully completed with If I'm a fool and I'll be there (two songs that merrit an upgrade, certainly their outtakes) !

Jamie, they have to find a way to get fans to buy what they have, and they did, your buying the masters again & the outtakes again, they know the fans. Im currently selling off most of my ftd's.

Kink56 – I think there is enough material from the 1969 session to make a third album (the album that could have been) just like ‘Elvis sings Guitar man’ and ‘Elvis sings Memphis Tennessee’. It could include all the remaining songs you mention + the instrumental tracks of the unfinished songs planned for this session (Poor man’s gold, Memory revival, Come out, come out) and the jam ‘This time/I can’t stop loving you’ that first appeared on the 1960’s Essential box set. On the cover, they could put a picture of the ‘American Sounds Studio’ that no longer exists. As an extra bonus, an interview with Chips Moman would also be nice. 2012wiseman – I think that ‘My way/America’ should be added to the (I hope) future FTD release of ‘Elvis in concert’ since the single was released to promote the album in 1977. I believe it would be out of place on the ‘Moody blue’ album. TCB
Tony C wrote on November 08, 2012
I do know what tracks were on Elvis' original albums, I have been buying them since the sixties, so I know the origins of "Stuck On You" and "Sylvia". My point was to question how somebody can state that "I'll Be There" and "If I'm a Fool (For Loving You)" are missing from the re-vamped "Back In Memphis". Missing is the key word. Of course they could have been added as bonus tracks, but they cannot be missing as they were never there in the first place. Now we have the call for these 1969 tracks to be added to an upgrade of "Moody Blue", along with "You're The Reason I'm Living", a 1975 soundboard recording! Where is the logic in that?
VivaLasDavies wrote on November 08, 2012
A third Memphis album... I'm sure someone suggested that idea on 6/11. Come to think of it , it was me.
2012wiseman wrote on November 10, 2012
After reading all of those positive suggestions as to what we, fans, would like to see FTD release in the very near future (2013 ??), I come to the conclusion that many more FTD releases could be made that may sell a lot better than most recent ones (I hear they only sold 2 thousand copies of some...!). I'd buy a 4CD Box with booklet of both Memphis sessions 1969. I also think they should release on Legacy Sony records a new 2 CD pack of Elvis in Concert including a lot of those live versions we haven't had together ... You're reason, America, Moody blue, Unchained melody a.o. Also feel that FTD missed the boat by not adding to a (weak) From EP Blvd release bonus songs like I mentionned before. Therefore, I would hope that on next FTD MBlue album (with outtakes) they add those commercially valuable songs like My way, America (his last single releases while alive !), Reason I'm living & Hurt live (both so representative of Elvis' own terrible state of mind during those last few months of his life) !!! Great for the wider public audience and commercially totally acceptable for general Sony Legacy release in my opinion. On Back in Memphis song treacklist we MISS definitely (to make it commercially--for fans-- more attractive to listen to these songs with outtakes : I'll be there, If I'm a fool (especially from take 9 till 12 with conversation), Kentucky rain, slow version X-rated Stanger in my own home town and more, much more (many different) takes of In Ghetto (as SMinds is on it too) ! And last but not least, I won't even mention the original movie songs of TTWII and especially EonTour accompanied by many other groovy hit songs that were not in the movies as bonus songs on such a 3CDBox for each ! Let's hope FTD brings us great new (more attractive) releases in 2013. Happy holidays fans !Have agreat Turkey yu'all !!
VivaLasDavies wrote on November 10, 2012
Wiseman, if they put all the additional tracks you suggest on BIM, that would mean less space for outtakes of the songs on the original album. Surely better to keep ALL of the remaining songs back for what would then be a fairly strong third Memphis album. As for including unrelated songs on the classic albums, as others have said, that makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. We need to be patient, I'm sure all the remaining songs and their outtakes will eventually see the light of day.
2012wiseman wrote on November 12, 2012
Davies, my friend: there's only 4 songs on that album that are OK plus his UMelody rendition....all the rest you can throw away...so more outtakes of bad songs, NO Sir, thank you. I never listen to the rest. Was bad release then and now. And talking about patience Buddy, we've been patient long enough with RCA, then Sony, now FTD....no way ! It's gonna become available now otherwise we will no longer be on this earth ... You don't realize the only guys that are still buying this stuff are over 60, 70, 80 and no youngsters will buy outtakes of Elvis from 50 or 60 years ago. Got it ? They'll need to add some new (for us) attractive materials on there...like live versions not-so-common songs e.g. You're reason or yes, again "I really don't want to know and Hurt (all repeatedly sung during his last final tour '77"...has some meaning for fans !

Tony, let's not talk about the logics behind Sony's and FTD's recent releases...please. They're unworthy to be called logic releases, not in the mind of Scandinavians, not in our minds...not in the minds of (too young) marketing managers (read idiots and incompetent people who don't know anything about Elvis, but promoted to be in an office in NYork...big deal). And one more thing brother: in thisz volatile music market, you need to come up with change all the time so that you can sell your products. Not everything should remain the same (like the original release as you claim). You don't seem to grasp primary marketing rules in order to be successful or achieve high sales. Sorry man but you can't allow yourself to be conservative in this field today. They should have and must listen better to what fans really want. After all, those customers are the only customers that you've got; young persons don't buy Elvis outtakes or re-makes anymore.... Shall I give you a couple of clues here that we all still wait for to be released ? The outtakes of 64 till 68 incl. U.S.male, Too much monkey buzz., Edge of reality, etc . They started with Elvis sings GMan, then Elvis sings Memphis; so when will they finally release Elvis sings U.S. Male new FTD with lots of hillarious outtakes (!) and then the outtakes of his last 5 movies (with some great altern. versions and outtakes of superhits all toghether in one FTD double CD digipack. Now then you're talking business brother. Please re-read my earlier suggestions still printed hereunder and you'll understand a bit better what Sony and also FTD needs to do in 2013 !!!

Wiseman "my friend" I'm talking about the Memphis albums. "UMelody" as you call it has nothing to do with these sessions. Moreover whatever you think of as bad is entirely subjective, i.e. just your opinion . No need to reply, I'm done here.
alanfalk wrote on November 12, 2012
I really think the folks behind FTD are treated bad,and here are the reasons I base that oppinion on; First of all I think that Ernst and Roger and co. really are trying to deliver some good products (and in my eyes and ears succeeds), but obviusly they can´t satisfy everyone, and therefor they are called idiots, fools, greedy and thieves !! Try to look at the different treads on this site and see how people have the exsact opposite oppinions about the different releases and their contents ; some want post 74-shows others hate those, some wants classic albums that resembles the original ones 100% song vise, others wants a lot of extra stuff on, some wants rehersals and audience recordings in whatever sound possible, others complain over almost anything with substandard sound, some people likes a lot of different songs with a couple of different takes to each, other people would rather have all the takes to a few songs on one release, etc. etc. Then there is the "rip off"price "those thieves" wants for their products (that we are FORCED to buy!!), but does anyone here know why the prices are higher than the regular releases ?? I don´t, but maybe it is because the regular releases sell up to 500.000 copies while FTDs only sell 2000-15000 copies, and the same amount of work has to go into it ?! Some times it seems like people expect FTD to be run like a pro-bono project, but how many of the complainers here would run their business for free ?? In the beginning people got mostly one cd in each release and they were thrilled, now they often get two, and what is the reaction ? some wants three !! IMHO we should be glad that there is a collectors label, and just buy the FTDs that we like. Off cause we can complain, but does it have to be in such a harsh language ? Now some people will probably accuse me of having an interest in the label, and they are right !!, I have an interest in it in the way that I would love them to keep releasing CDs, but that is also my only interest, but maybe those people who wish to link every defender of FTD to the label in one way or the other, themselves have motives for bashing the label time and time again ? (could they be bootlegers ?).
kink56 wrote on November 13, 2012
Alanfalk, I agree with you. I am a fan of the Classic Album series and the only complaint I really have is HURRY UP!!
2012wiseman wrote on November 15, 2012
Alan, it sure is a long, long time ago that Sony or RCA sold half a-million copies of an Elvis release, my friend ! Realistic figures show around 20.000 and FTD complains heavily to the presidents of EPFanClubs that they do not work hard enough to motivate the press and TV + radiostations to play more of Elvis' recent (and old) songs or show his TV releases more. They sell at the most 2.500 copies of each new FTD release, it seems. Bootleggers do better ! And here I follow and agree with you a lot when you call some of those so-called managers, incompetent people with no feel for business goals, profits or success. Sure there are many more of us, thinking the same way. Have a look at the latest Prince of another Planet Video FTD which is so badly produced...very amateuristic while they could have made a jewel out of it. Now the TV stations around the world won't even show it because you only see Elvis on stage at Mad Sq Garden only for ...seconds not even minutes ! So poor, man. Unbelievable !! A slap in the face of all fans, indeed.

can't understand why FTd complains. Since when it's the job for promoting new cd of FTD by fans. fans do the hard work and FTD gets the money. But i can tell you. I'm working at a local ( but wellknown ) station. I made there two shows 9(no i don't get paid) When you ask send us the new cd's. The only answer is no. Only the big stations gets the promo's ect.And those stations don't play music older then the 70's. And you know what these people think about elvis. But that's the problem. Not from the fans. While Elvis has many great albums. And this album also . More soulfull songs, blues, country. But still complains. but isn't the fair is moving on the master with vocal overdub. isn't that the album version???.
alanfalk wrote on November 16, 2012
Actually, Wiseman, Both An Afternoon in the Garden, The Essential Elvis and Christmas Duets have sold close to 500.000 copies each . Regarding the FTDs I have heard that the sell anywhere from 2500 to 20.000 but I don´t know, if the sells less then that just prowe my argument futher, as why they are more expensive. And I really like the Prince release, both the new sound, the booklet and the DVD and it is not expensive .
kink56 wrote on November 16, 2012
And I agree with the Capt on background singers (as well as ALL musicians) HAVE to be in tune, on pitch, in key! A lead singer has leeway, expression to move around, but NOTHING is more offensive than a background singer or a chorus being off. It is funny how Elvis immediately reacted to a guitarist or a bass player hitting a wrong note. They did not even have to be playing out of key, but simply using an alternate chord that still fit the tune and he would remark. But I do not recall Elvis commenting on any of the Jordanaires' awful off key performances during the session tapes and it amazes me what was acceptable as master takes totally ignoring the Jordanaires' off key performances. Music is not like an Olympic performance, a few errors on the gymnastic floor routine can still win a gold medal, but one sour note on a record kinda screws the pooch.

A real "mistake" that FTD did NOT include : Kentucky rain, If I'm a fool, My little friend, I'll be there !! They belong here friends, not anywhere else. Overlooked again Ernst ? Nor did Roger or Tunzi see it...and Knudsen neither...?! When can we get the release of all outtakes of his last 5 movies (good songs in there...especially those that got "cut away" from the movie soundtrack...! Also wonder what bonus songs they'll put on FTD Moody Blue digipack in 2013 ?? If you have all those boots already plus the several Sony releases (Memphis sessions, The Memphis Record, Suspicious Minds vol 1&2) etc....you wonder what (and how many) Elvis fans will be buying this release...Hope more than 1.000 !
