April FTDs

By the end of the month of April, FTD will provide a new CD, book and vinyl album:

“ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT”

If one place is to be picked as the most important in the career of Elvis Presley, it is without doubt Shreveport in the northwest part of Louisiana. The exposure that Elvis got through the radio broadcast of The Louisiana Hayride in 1954-56 was one of the key factors of establishing the early part of his career. With the exception of Las Vegas, there is no place where Elvis played more shows, and his return to the city in 1975 was like a homecoming to both Elvis and the many fans he had there since he started out. We have chosen to release the soundboard from the evening show of June 7 – definitely a show that Elvis and the audience truly enjoy, and with a great set list featuring old and new favourites. The CD comes in a 5” digipack with an eight-page booklet featuring photos from the June 1975 tour.

“WELCOME HOME ELVIS 1960”

Flaming Star, in collaboration with FTD, publishes a 260 pages book about the vital weeks in 1960 where Elvis regained control over his career. The format is the same as the well-known FTD book format (KING CREOLE-THE MUSIC and A MOMENT IN TIME). The book includes: More than 300 photos, many of them previously unpublished, text by David English and a CD with the original mono master for “ELVIS IS BACK”. Pictures include Elvis coming home from the army, several press conferences, pictures at Graceland, coverage of the Sinatra TV show and much more.

“PROMISED LAND – The Companion Album”

FTD vinyl is pleased to announce the release of “Promised Land – The Companion Album” - A Special Limited Edition 2-disc 180-gram vinyl set.

• Disc 1- alternative version of album featuring Stax outtakes

• Disc 2 – STAX more outtakes!

• Vinyl cutting by ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS

• DMM Copper Mastering

• 180 Grams heavyweight vinyl

• Strictly limited pressing

Don't know why FTD is delaying release of Elvis' last two albums; maybe for July/Aug 2012 release ? I strongly believe that FTD should bring them out on double CD or BMG should bring them out both as one Legacy pack...with photos and a nice story about what Elvis meant to music business in the world, his uniqueness, daring, and mention the fact that Elvis has sold more than ONE billion records !!! Tough to beat that one, Madonna or Jackson....He was well ahead of his time in 1955/56 while nowadays singers sell anyhow one million records (otherwise it's called a faillure, isn't it) but then
in the old days...it was a miracle ! Billboard and Music Express or Rolling Stones mags should pay huge, oversized tribute to the one and only King of Music (when music was still music, not rap or motown or pop-a-the-pop with lots of crazy nonsense around, no more melody and lots of flying bubbles & smoke (otherwise the young won't buy it.....)!!

JeanMarie I believe the fans are getting ripped off only by buying poor quality product. If a fan buys the same songs over & over than he's not getting ripped off because that's his choice. When that same fan buys a product with substandard sound & he dosen't know that until after he buys the product tan yes he is getting ripped off. The same way Elvis ripped off James Brown cape gimmick..

How can Steve's opinion be either right or wrong, it is his opinion, nothing more than that. Steve does not throw down his opinion as a statement of fact, unlike some here.

JeanMarie - An opinion is neither right or wrong, just someone's point of view. When I express it, I'm not saying I'm right, its just my thoughts on the matter.

I like the books. I enjoy them with a cup of tea more than the cds(of course not the masters). The last FTD cd I bought was Jailhouse Rock vol. 2 and even that I play rarely. Forget soundboards, they bore me to tears. And vinyl? I only care about vinyl from Sun 209 to the Moody Blue LP, the ones that came out in his lifetime and the occasional boxsets in the 80's. But thats my personal choice, and I choose not to buy. But the books are too expensive, and the CD/book combo is a waste. Just look at the book/cd Flashback. Great book. The cd is a total waste with the songs being issued elsewhere. That is a legitimate complaint and I can understand how some fans feel 'ripped off' when FTD does re-issue material and for that, they should be taken to task. No one should have to pay twice for the same material.

One may wonder why there are so many critical notes. I think it is not that people are unsatisfied, well at least I am not. And I decide myself what to buy. Yet there are a few points that are standard: 1 errors on covers or even on cds; 2 incompleteness, while materials are there; 3. price of books (by all producers btw) and cds, while others focus more on package - it is the sentiment that we have paid already so much in the past decades that while cds can be bought for 5 - 10 euro a litle more extra cents could be spent on layout/info/package; 4. possibly too much focus on their own plans, think about the MRS releases and the sort. It's business, so a critical note may be vented. Critical appreciation from my side at least. Anyway, this CD I will buy. The other materials I leave for others.

To be honest, I'm happy with every unreleased show in good quality and will buy this show for sure. The LP releases are for people who stayed loyal to vinyl and nothing wrong with that. The vinyl product is really for nice market within the Elvis community. The books are similar - I have bought the '56 book and absolutely love it. I do not care for the King Creole - Frame by Frame book but can imagine other fans think it is worth the money. I'm happy that FTD and Ernst keep on working to bring out quality products for the fans. These are expensive products but the sales figures appear to be pretty low around 25,000 globally. Enjoy while it lasts, one day FTD will stop releasing product because they hit the bottom of the vault....
dgirl (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 29, 2012report abuse
Jeoliverm you have a point. People shouldnt complain about what's coming out, just choose not to buy it. But they do have a right to complain about the cost. The books are nice, I would like to have them, but I need gas in my car and food on my table. Books should not cost this much and I feel complaints are justified there. Maybe some Elvis fans can buy everything and have endless cash, but I do not. Why do Elvis products cost so much more than other artists?
Jeoliverm (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 29, 2012report abuse
I am absolutely fed up of the complaints about Ernst and his work with the FTD label. We know what it's about FTD for more than 10 YEARS, we know that Elvis died 35 YEARS ago. These are the offers, we can buy them or not. I don't buy all the items published by FTD, I pick the ones that I am interested for, so, please, do the same. It's very, very boring to have all these complaints year after year... There is no more in the barrel but outtakes and multiplication of the same material, what do you think you could do with that? Please, think a bit...
Ciscoking (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 29, 2012report abuse
What about the possibility of FTD NOT having such a show..? If Ernst released an previously not available tour show from 1974 the complainers would ..argue ..always the same songs.....too..a loose loose situation for Ernst..get a live..
ernst blofeld (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 29, 2012report abuse
oh god, not ANOTHER show from the June 1975 tour!!!! same setlist as other shows from this tour that have been released. We did not need this now. once again, FTD takes us for fools who will buy anything they release. Why, WHY cant FTD release a show from July 1975 when the setlist was shaken up a bit (featuring some rarely performed tunes) and Elvis was even more on fire than the June 1975 shows. or take your choice of many other tours over the years that have been sorely under-represented on soundboard CDs.

Thank you gentlemen ! Don't believe the man ever did a bad version of "Bridge" or "I'll Remember". Sounds like some enjoyable listening in the near future.

Orion,..I read it somewhere..I`ll Remeber You, Bridge Over TW and Hawaiian Wedd. Song..from memory..

I like the cover artwork, kind of a mix of Madison Square Garden and Moody Blue. Elvis looks awesome in the picture.

Cisco- I know my eyes aren't what they used to be, but where are the "bonus songs" listed ?
marty (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
I will admit that I am addicted and as such I will be buying all the new FTD releases. They are quality products but as others have also commented rather expensive. There's not much left in the vaults and hense FTD are now releasing more books. I am looking forward to the complete stereo '57 sessions, the complete Memphis '69 sessions, the complete jungle room sessions & a box set with all the '69 live recordings. Then I'll be happier...
Ciscoking (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
Friends..the setlists of AS and ES of June 6, 1975 are identical. All other is wrong. The show that we now get from FTD is just great..Elvis returned to the city where it all began..last time he was there back in 1956..that makes this show something special..the southern crowd went crazy and Elvis and the people had a great time in the hall..when he did Trilogy the walls were trembling and he got standing ovations.. NOTHING from this show is released on silver disc..we have a bad sounding AR which is incomplete and which will never see the light of day..the bonus tracks are well chosen, too....looking very forward to it..

Steve V, please make your tape available !
benny scott (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
Iray, my pleasure. The site also reports end of June there will also be a new book and (not with) a CD with rehearsals. No more details are available right now it seems. I know the webmaster (he's also the president of the fanclub) of the this Belgian site very well (for over more than 35 years) and can say he's usually well informed and regularly in contact with Ernst. Always El.

As we all know, the Nassau shows weren't recorded by RCA, but has anyone looked at Keith Flynn's site to see what July of '75 shows were captured on soundboard ? As far as FTD releasing the Nassau show from an AR, one never knows. After all, they released the New Year's show as an AR. I'm not a fan of ARs, but I would buy a decent sounding Nassau show if FTD found a 1st generation copy to use. Then again, I'd better be careful with what I wish, I'd hate to see FTD start releasing a lot of AR recordings.
Steve V (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
I was at the Nassau shows and it is a pity if RCA did not record them, they were better than the Garden shows by far(except for the Olivia NJ covers!) and of course Elvis was at the piano. I have my own tape as well. These other 1975 shows are nice but offer nothing new from whats out there already. The only other 'live' shows that may interest me are any from the fall 1970 tour and the 1975 Nassau shows as mentioned.
GEORGE (GK) (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
I wish RCA had recorded the 2 Nassau Coliseum shows, on July 19th 1975. 2 amazing concerts ! All we have are "audience recordings", including my own recording of the show , and RCA-FTD, I would gladly send you my copy, maybe it can be semi remastered, and released on your Label for all the fans to enjoy !

genedin, and also Let Me Be There, according to the Elvis In Concert-site this song is not on the settlist of the afternoon show too.Always El.

almost identicle to the memphis show yes but not.this show has the wonder of you and american trilogy. i believe its excatly the same as the afternoon show of the same day.

As a self-confessed soundboard junkie, I appreciate the fact that FTD has decided to release a show that hasn't been released on an 'import'. I agree that Elvis was really putting on some fine shows during the spring and summer of '75, but I wish that FTD had pulled out a July of '75 show, but maybe in due time. The sound on all the previously released soundboards from this time period have very good sound- so, looks like this one will be added to my collection.
Brian Quinn (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
I will be getting the 'Another Saturday Night' release. Will skip the other two but I expect they will be quality products.
benny scott (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
Iray, just read on another Elvis site the Classic G.I.Blues (double CD) is to be released end of June. They also state a volume.2 should follow. Always El.
benny scott (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
I am Buffalo Horn, agreed about being nice having the choice to buy it on vinyl. I bought several FTD vinyl releases in the past but I'll skip this one 'cause I'm less interested in this one, just a personal choise. As for the book, €60 that is +/- £50, which is, imo not really cheap. I'll wait for the next The Elvis Files (Vol.5) . This one being priced €75 = +/- £62. As member of an Elvis fanclub I'll get a reduction of 10%, so I'll pay about £56 for a book of 560 pages with 1600 pics.Won't have to pay postage, I'll go and get it straight from the shop, situated not so far from where I live. That's what I had in mind when I wrote that , imo, the Welcome Home Elvis was overpriced for what you get. This won't stop me buying FTD-stuff in the future, I'm aware we had many good releases in the past, so yes, keep 'm coming Ernst, but this time I'll keep the boat off , with the exception of the soundboard.Always El.
I am Buffalo-Horn! (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
The book is €60.00 (60 Euros) plus postage of course. Promised Land is a great album & it's nice to have the choice of buying it on LP if you want. FTD could certainly keep going for another decade just releasing their current output on Double LP! Go for it Erst!!
GEORGE (GK) (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
It all looks great to me !!! Wish it was more affordable though ! "Promised Land-the album, still doesn't get the best album photo, after all these years ! I do like the "Another Saturday night" album (CD COVER) And without a doubt Elvis was happy and having fun and singing great, on stage in the spring and summer of 1975.
Lefty (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 28, 2012report abuse
Here's the set list from the Shreveport concert, June 7, 1975, evening show: 2001 Theme, C C Rider, I Got A Woman/Amen, Love Me, If You Love Me, Love Me Tender, All Shook Up, Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, The Wonder Of You, Burning Love, Band Introductions, Johnny B Goode, Drum Solo, Bass Solo, Piano Solo, School Days, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Why Me Lord ?, How Great Thou Art, Let Me Be There, An American Trilogy, Funny How Time Slips Away,Little Darlin', Mystery Train/Tiger Man, Cant Help Falling In Love, Closing Vamp. The set list is virtually identical to the June 10 show in Memphis (which is outstanding). I'm sure the Shreveport show is good too. Elvis was really happy in the Summer of '75, and you could tell that he enjoyed being on stage. In addition, his voice was strong as evidenced by his abilities to hit and carry the high notes on How Great Thou Art. I can't complain when FTD releases a previously unreleased soundboard that hasn't even made the bootleg circuit. That's what the label is supposed to do.
benny scott (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
You don't know me : you're right about the incomplete shows being completed with tracks from other shows. I trust you, saying the show is great . Unreleased indeed , I checked. So after all I'll go for the soundboard, you convinced me, but I'll pass the book and vinyl. Thanks for the info !Always El.
You Dont Know Me (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
Great show and UNRELEASED to my ears! don't forget Benny that most June 1975 soundboards are NOT completely recorded so this is why missing tracks are made up from other shows...including 3 decent 'bonus tracks'!~~
lray (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
Still waiting for GI Blues classic. I don't buy these records and books. But somebody must like them or they wouldn't keep cranking them out.
benny scott (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
This time FTD disappoints me. Have to agree with Cruiser. Book is overpriced imo. As for the soundboard : tracks 1,2 and 3 are from June 10, Memphis, afternoon show. Always El.
Cruiser621 (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
I was waiting for this or these? Please FTD come up with something better than this crap. I already own the FTD CD's of Promised Land and do not need any vinyl. Another expensive book no own can afford and another lousy live show? Come on guys, where's the 1957 binaural/stereo outtakes on one FTD disc? I'll be saving my money again.
Herman (profilecontact) wrote on Mar 27, 2012report abuse
Looks good, but I was waiting for another "classic" too.
