Aloha Legacy

December 24, 2012 | Music

'Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite' Legacy Edition March Release: At last a Sony Legacy 40th Anniversary release announced of Elvis' two Aloha concerts. Performed at the H.I.C. Arena in Honolulu on January 14, 1973, Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite was the first, worldwide live satellite broadcast of a concert - broadcast to over 40 Nations and screened to others several weeks later. The concert debuted in the U.S. TV on NBC on April 4 and the Nielsen ratings had the show at 33.8% of homes and 51% of those watching TV - and in the Far-East, TV viewing records were broken in Japan, Philippines, Australia, Korea and Hong Kong!
On Jan 12, a full dress rehearsal took place prior to the main show. Previously issued as "The Alternate Aloha", this dress rehearsal performance makes up the first 21 tracks of Disc 2 of this Legacy Edition, which has been REMIXED and REMASTERED by Steve Rosenthal and Rob Santos. At the end of the main show on Jan 14, Elvis recorded 5 bonus songs behind closed doors for the US version of the TV show (tracks 25 to 29 Disc 2). Although previously issued, it is the first time all 5 songs have appeared in their rightful place.

Great! At last we'll get a proper sounding rehearsal show instead of that awful mess that was "The Alternate Aloha", I could never listen to that, prefering the soundboard bootleg.

I really enjoy the Legacy Edition releases. The packaging is always top notch and the price is always a bargain ($16.38 on Amazon). I already pre-ordered my copy. As for Steve Rosenthal and Rob Santos, they are long time RCA/Sony sound engineers. They worked together with Vic Anesini on Dolly Parton's 99 song box set (Sony) and Steve REMIXED Sam Cooke's, "One Night Stand! Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem" (Reissue) and Rob produced the album. Some fans of Sam Cooke do not like the reissue, stating Sam's voice is too far up front, the orchestra is too far back, and the sound of the audience interaction is almost gone. Other fans love the reissue. I hope they do a good job with this project. We shall see.

Hello, the 5 'Mahalo' songs are included together in the expanded 'Aloha From Hawaii' CD. The songs were recorded immediately after the broadcast so chronologically and psychologically they were placed "In their rightful place" on that expanded CD. So when it is now claimed those songs are appearing, "(For) the first time...in their rightful place," on disc 2 of this Legacy outing exactly what is meant?

Love the Legacy releases! Perfect packing, artwork, sound and total value for money. Focusing on the essence of the classic releases without the outtakes etc. The only real letdown in the Legacy series is the "From Elvis In Memphis" release. The music is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but it is a missed opportunity that Sony didn't follow the strategy they first announced: CD1 filled with the original album plus the singles A-sides and CD2 with "Back In Memphis", singles B-sides and album cuts (Hey Jude, My Little friend etc...). If they had followed this idea we would have had all the American studios titles presented in the most enjoyable and listenable way possible (as opposed to the current version with mono singles and the "Suspicious Minds" release from the 90's where the songs are mixed with outtakes). A missed opportunity!

Maybe a little off topic, but I just had to say it;-)

A no-brainer this one ! I'll be definitely be picking up this one up for the dress rehearsal after that dreadful mix on the 1988 release. I'll be keeping a keen ear on 'What Now My Love' & 'Suspicious Minds' which have nothing on the audio of the DVD's. I just reckon though they should include outtakes of the 5 additional songs on disc 2. I personally can't see them improving on the broadcast show - hope I'm wrong...

I love the "Aloha" main concert. Not a big fan of the rehearsal. This is not a release I'll buy the moment it's available. It's on my "Buy Someday" list. If I need an "Aloha" fix I watch the DVD. U.S. telecast version, April '73.

I can't wait till they release the 50th anniversary edition of this. That's the one I'm buying. I only have to wait another 10 years. With the improved sound who cares if I've heard this a thousand times in numerous previously released versions. Of course I can wait for the 60th release but I'm not sure if it will be available in the afterlife.

Theoldscudder, I’m with you 100%! I just wonder how great it will be the 75h release. In fact I’ve already asked my sons to tell their sons not to forget the fantastic Century release!

I hope FTD will come with a nice special on this one in the "classic" series. I'll skip this one for now. I bought the legacy release of From Elvis in Memphis and it has the Back In Memphis album also. I also bought FTD Back In Memphis.....it's too much for me.

Yes oldscudder, but as the sound improves your hearing gets worse. Life can be cruel when it prohibits you from buying and enjoyng the same product since 1973.

Why would anyone want ftd to do a release on the aloha shows, when it will cost twice as much as the legacy edtion. The rerelease is needed only for the rehearsal show, the mix they put out on that show was a joke. I am also one of the ones who isnt really into the aloha shows, just dont understand the songs chosen.

Pedro. One of the funniest comments I've read on this site. Thanks for the humor.

This I will buy for sure. I´m happy everytime they improve the sound ( when they actually do improve it), because that meens that new fans have a chance to hear Elvis at his best, and I dont feel sorry for us "old" fans, if we are against it we can just skip it, therefor the "milk the fans" arguments strike me as being a little egoistic, we should all be glad that Sony, FTD or who ever still keeps it interesting to buy new releases.
Lefty wrote on December 31, 2012
Well said danishfan.
Steve Morse wrote on December 31, 2012
We should all be grateful for the Legacy series, giving what we hope will be permanently available editions of Elvis's key albums, beautifully presented and at an excellent price point. Remember you don't HAVE to buy them. To my way of thinking there haven't been that many issues/reissues of the material over the years. The 1988 release of the Alternate Hawaii was an abomination and, thank goodness, 25 years later, we shall finally have a listenable version of the rehearsal show. The Aloha show/performance/song selection is much maligned by some Elvis fans. For me, an Elvis fan since January 1963, it remains Elvis's greatest concert.

Nice, but I think that it's also time for a 40th Anniversary Blu-ray release of this great concert.

Detail is available on elvis.com. It looks really great - another release to look forward to.

Thanks In-A-Flash, it looks really great, it seems like we will get the same beautiful 8" packgage with a booklet just as we got with Prince ! I hope that they will have solved the little problem with the hard to get out CDs with this new release. I must say though that we Elvis fans have been really spoiled these last years, with great stuff like ; Prince, the whole Legacy serie, The Elvis files, YMWTBB, The boy from Tupelo and the live version of I forgot to remember to forget. And here in Denmark we have got a Graceland and today the person behind that (Henrik knudsen) just started a 24/7 radio station dedicated 100% to the kings music. And now the new year starts out with this Aloha release, damn we are so lucky !!
