ABC News.Com Poll

Last week we mentioned that Elvis wasn't "The King Of Polls" in Japan. In the USA they have a diffrent opinion. An ABC News.Com poll found 38 percent of Americans name Elvis Presley as the greatest rock 'n' roll star ever. Of the 128 performers named, no one else even breaks single digits; the second greatest rock 'n' roll star is Jimi Hendrix at 4 percent. Who Is the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Star of All Time? Elvis Presley 38 percent; Jimi Hendrix 4 percent; John Lennon 2 percent; Mick Jagger 2 percent; Bruce Springsteen 2 percent; Paul McCartney 2 percent; Eric Clapton 2 percent; Michael Jackson 2 percent; 120 Others 1 percent or less.

I am happy to see this country still recognizes Elvis as the icon (check that out Travolta) he is. But the person who responded that Europe & Japan got late starts into his music is certainly correct. Also, when you look at this list, it is easy to see that many people (probably the very youngest ones) don't know rock & roll from rock. There is a difference. Rock sprang from rock & roll just as jazz we know today sprang from dixieland & ragtime. Most of the people on this list still regard Elvis as the ultimate rock & roll performer, the one who started it all, especially for them! I am not making this up, check out MOJO magazine of over a year ago when they featured Elvis & the 50th anniversary of rock & roll. Long live the King! (and he hated that title, Mr. Travolta).

There were others But Elvis was White and with the brains of Colonel (i'll take 50 percent please) Parker he was able to take off like now one before or since. we are talking of the mid 1950's here.. could imagine if Elvis had not covered Tutti Frutti. you should get a load of Pat Boone singing it after taking it from Little Richard. In NY you only heard White artists except on the Allen Freed show where you heard the true artist doing his/her version of the song. Europe you missed the whole thing PS who was Tommy Steele?

Before anyone did anything Elvis did everything. He was the first and greatest rock star. That's why his career had so many mistakes. He had nobody to learn from.Others that followed learnt from Elvis.

I think rock 'n roll needs a new definition when artists like Micheal Jackson and Paul McCartney are included

And that's how it should be. Elvis leads the way, others only follow!
