2nd To James Dean

December 11, 2004 | People
Hollywood legend James Dean was voted the coolest icon of all time by a poll conducted by Glenfiddich Whisky, according to The Sun.

'The Rebel Without a Cause' star who was famous for his brooding looks was just 24 when he was killed in 1955 in a head-on crash while driving his Porsche.

The King of rock and roll Elvis Presley was runner-up in the icon poll of 2,000 men while Steve McQueen came in third.

"The top three men have all been dead for years, which shows how young men can still be inspired by icons that weren't even around in their lifetime," a spokesman for Glenfiddich was quoted as saying. The top five coolest icons of all times are:

1. James Dean
2. Elvis Presley
3. Steve McQueen
4. Muhammad Ali
5. Robert De Niro (ANI)

Lex, he was the guy who was too cool to live.

He was also the guy that Elvis wanted to be like. I'm staggered you don't know who he is !!

Elvis was really, really cool, but I still think that Robert De Niro is the coolest icon a guy can have! All those quotes from De Niro you can go around a throw out!! ;-) But it is a top 5 (almost) after my head. T. C. B.

James Dean based his whole schtick on Marlon Brando, who is my choice as the coolest. No one was cooler than Brando not even Sinatra. Remember Brando with the leather jacket and the cycle in Wild One. He was the first REBEL. Brando was difficult to imitate or emulate. He was an original. Remember when he puts on those women's gloves in Waterfront? Brando was way out there when it came to cool. No one could touch him. Dean was Brando-Lite. But as a singer or musician Elvis was the coolest of all time. He was Brando with a guitar. What are you rebelling against? Whataya got?

They have missed out the ultimate guy of cool, Dean Martin. Another guy Elvis wanted to be like and even Sinatra was always envious of his cool approach on stage.

Is it me, or is Elvis second to a lot of people lately?

Lex is kidding. Of course he knows James Dean but he also means that Elvis is the coolest by saying "who is James Dean". And Lex is right.

Like any poll there is bias in the sample. In this case they may have asked whisky drinkers only or people that only used their brand. They may have excluded people without red noses or rosey cheeks or those who not wearing kilts. Do not worry about piffling polls like this. Keep swigging the Bells.

In response to one of the comments members submitted regarding Brando being the first real rebel, I think that person forgot about John Garfield. He is considered by many film historians and fans as the first REAL rebel. Unlike Brando, who was just an actor assuming many different personas for the film roles, Garfield was genuinely the tough, lone character he portrayed on screen. I think you can also had Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Bruce Lee and Errol Flynn to the list of cool, charasmatic and unique icons of the 20th century. As far as singers, Elvis and Johnny Cash would have to be on top of the list.

Thanks Ton, but I was only saying it because in the Usher thing a lot of idiotic fans were putting Usher down, and even I, who hate current (later than 1990) pop music, think that is ignorant behaviour. And of course I know that James Dean invented pop corn.
Eddie White wrote on December 14, 2004
DisLex I put Usher down but I am not an idiot. Why don't you join hhis fan club and do him a disservice. I personally take exception to you calling me an idiot and others who disagree with you. I can assure you I'm far from being stupid. How about yourself. It is obvious that you cannot take personal critiscm but hey, don't knock the fans who dare to disagree and certainly don't demene them by calling them idiots. My parting shot is get real, wake up and smell the coffeee.

Hasn't it dawned on you all that most of you have differing opinions, therefore the ones voting in such polls do too. It just goes to prove that such polls are meaningless. Can't we have some intelligent news reporting on Elvis for a change, instead of poll results guarenteed to get a reaction. Surely the Elvis scene isn't that dull as not to create more worthy articles.
