Where Could I Go but to the Lord

Words & Music:
J.B. CoatsLiving below in this old sinful world
Hardly a comfort can afford
Striving alone to face temptation so
Now won't you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go oh where could I go
Seeking the refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Won't you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Life here is grand with friends I love so dear
Comfort I get from God's own word
Yet when I face that chilling hand of death
Won't you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go oh where could I go
Seeking the refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Won't you tell me

How Great Thou ArtReactions
I like the '68 TV version, but prefer the original HGTA album version. Elvis' vocal is more delicate. Less bombastic.
always liked this song, thought that his hand in mine album was one of his best recorded albums, every track was crystal clear,a couple of tracks on how great thou' art album slightly muffled.loved the tv special version, maybe not as delicate as the studio version but better in my opinion.
The studio version is a Master Piece, one of my favorites gospel songs. Five stars.
Elvis' first two gospel LPs were good the third one He Touched me not so.He is My Everthing is There Goes My Everthing
with different words.I'm not religous anyway,so I rarely play them.I liked the cover of His Hand In Mine. Nothing wrong with this song though.
A good song from a classic Elvis album. Gospel was clearly one of Elvis favorite music genres and gospels are generally performed outstandingly by our man. The studio version of the song is a bit too slow in my opinion but still very nice, the NBC version has more the right beat but misses the sacred feeling of the studio recording. Three stars from me.
I never listen to the gospel albums (1 star) (though for collection sake I purchased the vinyl and the standard cd). As part of the medley in the 1968 TV Special it is nice (2 stars) as it is just a part of the whole show. At least it has more beat to it. Yet I have to admit in my MP3 collection I skipped it.
Good song, but it drags a bit. The tempo should be like the TV show. Would have a been much better that way.
Always thought the album was a bit dull. And I don´t think he was completely ready for the big ones in ´66. Sang them better in the seventies with a stronger voice. But I always loved "If the Lord...."!
Love Elvis singing the gospel. It's great he sang so much gospel music. Love this song. I would't have mind i've there had been a whole gospel tv show.
Recorded in 1966 for the 1967 sacred LP "How Great Thou Art". A truly great album, but this track is the worst track on the LP. It isn't bad, it just seems to drag. I prefer the version recorded for the 1968 TV Special, that was recorded in a medley with "Up Above My Head" and Saved". This medley is one of the best gospel performances of his career and he had quite a few great gospel performances.
The '68 version is great, the studio version just don't do it to me (like the most of the album).
