Swing Down Sweet Chariot

Rating:
4.5 / 5

Words & Music: traditional

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot
Stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot
Stop and let me ride
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
Well I’ve got a home on the other side

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot
Stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot
Stop and let me ride
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
Well I’ve got a home on the other side

Well, well, well, well, well, well

Ezekial went down in the middle of a field
He saw an angel workin' on a chariot wheel
Wasn't so particular 'bout the chariot wheel
Just wanted to see how a chariot feel

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot
Stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot
Stop and let me ride
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
Well I’ve got a home on the other side

Well, well, well Ezekial went down and he got on board
Chariot went a bumpin' on down the road
Zeke wasn't so particular 'bout the bumpin' of the road
Just wanted to lay down his heavy load

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot
Stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot
Stop and let me ride
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
Well I’ve got a home on the other side

Well I got a father in the promised land
Ain't no more stoppin' till I shake his hand
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
I've got a home on the other side

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot
Stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot
Stop and let me ride
Rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
Well I’ve got a home on the other side

Great in 1960 when he recorded it for the "His Hand In Mine" LP and just as good when he recorded it in 1968 for the movie "The Trouble With Girls". A definite highlight on the HHIM LP...5 stars all the way. I always wondered why Camden did not include the movie version on the 1971 LP "You'll Never Walk Alone", it would have rounded out the LP at 10 songs.

Great rolling gospel. Both versions do the trick for me.

Both performances are absolutely top notch demonstrating just how good our boy was in this genre. Energetic, committed and totally convincing - 5 stars with ease.

This is such a wonderful, electrifying, groovy and fun gospel song and Elvis easily has the very best renditions of it. No one will ever be able to sing gospel songs as well or better than Elvis sang them.
