Susan When She Tried

Rating:
4.2 / 5

Words & Music: Don Reid

I got over Charlotte Thompson, Goldie Johnson,
Lord they done me wrong
I took it hard with Peggy Harper
She hurt me bad, but not for long
There's just one I remember
Makes me feel funny down inside
I'd trade 'em all for just one hour
Of Susan when she tried

No there's never been a woman
Who could make me weak inside
And give me what I needed
Like Susan when she tried

It gets worse in the summer
When the nights are hot and long
And it's bad in December
When they play those Christmas songs
So if you ask me and I don't tell you
Bet your sweet bottom dollar I lied
'Cause there's never been one better
Than Susan when she tried

Written by a member of the Statler Brothers and sang my the King of Rock n' Roll??? It sounds like an odd combination, but Elvis really makes this one work. Good country and western feel with that special Presley touch. 4 stars for this track.

A fine uptempo country number from a really good album. Elvis was more at home in the latter years with these types of song than the rockers from the past. He had developed a smoother less rasping vocal through the years which at this stage of his career suited a song like this one. - easily 4 stars.

Fine rendition of a Statler Brothers classic. Elvis's version is slightly uptempo and very well done.

Susan When She Tried is a fine country tune by Elvis. I've always liked it along with the entire Today album. I looped this song for a longer playing time since it always brings joy to listen to. I think Elvis did well on all the songs on the album. Later on also the Tiger Man jam is a treat. I'm awaiting the Legacy edition of the album any day soon, hoping for a sound upgrade compared to the FTD release. By the way, Elvis Today made it as high as no 11 in the Norwegian charts back in the day!

This is an energetic cut from the Today album. Elvis seems enjoy singing this song. A live version would have been great.

Elvis' rendition of this superb uptempo country song was stellar and fun. I've never skipped it. Elvis' rendition of this gem should definitely be much better known than it actually is. It's one of my Top 5 most favorite tracks from the "Today" album.
