Suppose

Rating:
4.3 / 5

Words & Music: Sylvia Dee George Goehring

Suppose no rose would ever grow again
Suppose no brook would ever flow again
Suppose no star should ever glow again
Suppose you didn't love me

Suppose there were no bees or butterflies
Suppose no bird should ever cross the skies
Suppose the sun should never never rise
Suppose you didn't love me

It's impossible to imagine a world without a star
But imagining no you is more impossible, by far
Suppose the Springtime never should arrive
Suppose the tall green trees should not survive
Suppose I had no wish to be alive
Suppose you didn't love me

It's impossible to imagine a world without a star
But imagining no you is more impossible, by far
Suppose the Springtime never should arrive
Suppose the tall green trees should not survive
Suppose I had no wish to be alive
Suppose you didn't love me
Suppose you didn't love me

A ballad Elvis recorded twice, once for the movie "Speedway" and once in a recording session. The version recorded for "Speedway" was not included in the movie, but did show up on the soundtrack LP as a bonus song. The studio version stayed unreleased until the 60's boxed set in the 90's. Of the two, I actually prefer the one on the "Speedway" LP, but overall it is just a passable ballad.

A beautiful ballad, sung, perfectly by Elvis.

This is a great song. One of the finest late 60's ballads and certainly the best song on Speedway where it was totally out of place.

Reminds me of Lennon's "Imagine",totally wasted on the Speedway soundtrack.

Always reminds me too of John Lennons hit. I more or less gave up on Elvis movie soundtracks after 1965 so i didnt come across this gem until after 2000 when i was updating my cd collection. if only this and other gems of the mid 60's been gathered together on one album.

Just one word: beautiful. The studio recordings of 66/67 are fantastic. Four stars from me.

One of those beautiful ballads of the sixties, for most people hidden away on a soundtrack. That was quite common in the sixties. Unfortunately because it would have offered the casual radio listener a better understanding of Elvis' outstanding quality as a singer. I loe to listen to this song as his voice is so full of feeling. He had that remarkable talent to voice the sentiment of the lyrics.

Hidden gem. How unfortunate the way his record compamy & manager handled his recordings. I also blame Elvis for this. Did he not care that a song like this was also on an album that featured He's Your Uncle Not Your Dad? I guess he didn't.

It's obvious that John Lennon committed plagiarism when he wrote "Imagine".

This is one of those songs I just wish Elvis had not recorded. I find it a drag and rather whimpish. Another song for me that falls into this category would be "Ask Me". Two songs I can very much live without.

This is such a magnificent song and it should definitely be way better known than it actually is. I rate this song 5 Stars.

A hidden classic, sung with such soul and feeling and reminiscent of John Lennon's Imagine.

Almost every 60s soundtrack as a couple of winner on them. Suppose is one of them.

This is a great song, a ray of hope in those lean late 60's years, but to say this inspired Imagine is ludicrous. There is no proof of that and there is nothing remotely close between the 2 songs excpet the titles. Supose/Imagine. Thanks for the laugh.

This song was meant for "Easy come, easy go". Elvis liked it, Charlie Hodge learned the piano part and they recorded it on Red West's recording equipment. Elvis send it to Felton Jarvis, who booked studio time & musicians, who overdubbed the track. This is the version that can be heard on "From Nashville to Memphis". On "Home recordings" you can hear the bare version. Suppose was re-recorded in june 1967 for Speedway. That version has the better vocals by Elvis.

I like the short version found on the "Speedway" LP best. 4 stars. Don't care for the "Nashville" version heard on the '60's box. 2 stars.
