So High

Rating:
4.4 / 5

Words & Music: Arranged by Elvis Presley

Well, He's so high (so high you can't get over Him)
So wide (so wide you can't get around Him)
So low (so low you can't get under him)
Great God Almighty (you must come in at the door)

Oh well, He's high (so high you can't get over Him)
He's wide (so wide you can't get around Him)
So low (so low you can't get under him)
The mighty lamb (you must come in at the door)

Well I went down in the valley
You know I did over there ever stay
My soul got happy in the valley
You know I stayed right there all day

Well, He's high (so high you can't get over Him)
And he's wide (so wide you can't get around Him)
I know he's so low (so low you can't get under him)
The mighty lamb (you must come in at the door)

Well I ain't been to heaven but I’m, I'm told
The streets the streets are pearls
You know the mighty mighty
Mighty gates are gold

And He's high (so high you can't get over Him)
So wide (so wide you can't get around Him)
He's so low (so low you can't get under him)
The mighty lamb (you must come in at the door)

Well, He's high (so high you can't get over Him)
And he's wide (so wide you can't get around Him)
I know he's so low (so low you can't get under him)
The mighty lamb (you must come in at the door)

Probably my favourite Elvis gospel. I can't stand still and praise the Lord when I hear this one.

How he excelled at these uptempo gospel numbers, and could match his black brothers with the excitement and feeling generated. I can almost see everyone rocking the church aisles when I here these numbers.

The book of Revelation (chapter 21, verse 21) in the Holy Bible speaks of gates of pearl and the street of pure gold, not the opposite way as Elvis sang it.

It's a shame that the sound on the hgta lp isn't as great as on hhim. Elvis himself wasn't in his best voice either, but at least he sounded emotional connected to most of the songs, something that got lost on all the soundtracks he sang but doesn't cared for. In hindsight those sessions here seemed to be the beginning of his comeback, even if not many record buyers cared back then. So High, why not the best track of the album, is one of the more convincing efforts on the lp. Elvis was still abke to handle rhythm songs. It's not a masterpiece, but definitely a nice listen. I give 4 stars.

I seem to recall reading way back, that Elvis wanted this «church» sound to the recordings. Thus making it a little special? Maybe that’s why some people don’t fancy the sound so much? But, the feeling is there!! And his voice had changed a bit since His Hand In Mine. Still, it’s a wonderful album! I tend to fancy the uptempo spirituals myself. So High is one that really rocks! Personal fav from the album is Run On!
